"FUCK PEOPLE. LAST FUCKING TIME. OIL IS A FUNGIBLE COMMODITY. Seriously, stop fucking listening to Phish and take a fucking economics class and realize how fucking retarded you sound. Oil is oil is oil, it doesnt fucking matter if it comes from Venezuela, Alaska, Iraq or your fat hippy ass crack, PRICE IS SET BY GLOBAL SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Thats why its called FUNGIBLE, because oil from Iraq is the fucking same as oil from anywhere else. Say whatever the fuck you want about the war, but GET A FUCKING CLUE. This isn't for the oil.
This is why I hate modern western civilization. We have access to so much fucking information, and the freedom to take it all in, but we'd rather repeat like lapdogs what we've seen and heard then get off our lazy asses and do any thinking...
Lets review the "Blood for Oil" argument
Iraq even at maximum output would never produce enough oil to offset OPEC, so strike that
We could have had cheaper oil by lifting sanctions, like Iraq was begging us to do, so strike that
We can't turn Iraq into our own personal oil reserve because it would make no sense RE:fungible
We went in there because after 9-11 we changed as a country and decided not to put up with weapons proliferation. Saddam decided to play a bluffing game, thinking we would back down, and in the process looking like a badass to other arabs. We didnt, he didnt and so we proceed to here.
A war to liberate the Iraqi people? Hell no, thats spin. It was a nice benefit but nope nope nope. This was all about protecting our asses, and going to extremes to do so. The US is running scared after 9-11, we're lashing out wherever we get frustrated. That was good for awhile, shows we mean business. Now we need to settle down and start working with the world a bit.
So please tell me, what resources were you referring to? The hundreds of libraries of free thinking literature left over by the Saddam regime? Camels? Poor people? If not oil, Im not sure what you were referring to."
Zoidberg, you are my hero. Can I fly you down to CA so we can go tell off some protestors together?

Actually oil from Iraq isnt the same as evrywhere else. The oil in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland for example cant be used for making petrol cos it doesnt have the right combination of hydrocarbon chains (i think its used for plastics)

These are post I had written in response to Zoidbergs arguement on the other thread. (With some minor cosmetic changes)
Not about oil? Then what excatly are we doing there? I do not believe the humanitarian case is so great that military action was called for. I do believe the invasion of Iraq and subsequent takeover of their oil was the prime motivator for the US to go to war.
First, we secure ourselves of a steady supply of crude, that is easy to extract from the ground. Not all oil is as simple to remove from the earth, therefore it is more expensive to produce. Secondly, this was an object lesson for the Saudis. Who funded and for the most part carried out the attacks of 9/11. Finally, It gave the US a "legitimate" presence in the Middle East; one that we needed to keep the Israelis and Palestinians away from each others throats.
While it is true that the Saudi's have more oil, Iraq has vast resurces. Enough resources that we don't have to worry about our production being strangled through lack of energy. Easily extractable crude oil is absolutely nessasary to keep our economy functioning. If you don't think that our assumption of Iraqi oil resources didn't upset OPEC, and by extention the Saudi's applecart; I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.
We both know that the Saudi's are the "big boys" of OPEC and their monopoly was on oil was tolerated as long as they did nothing to threaten the US. 9/11 happened and America had a tantrum. We stomped Afganistan (totally justifiable) and then we looked to secure an oil supply. One that was plentiful and easily accessable.
So in closing; McBain (if that is your real name) get your own arguement.
f we had lifted sanctions it would have given Saddam a tactical victory. It was more expedient to invade, and we were pissed off.
