That little white rectangle on top of your camera? It's a flash. You make it work by hitting a button with a little lightning bolt on it until a little lightning bolt appears on the screen, telling you that the flash will work to illuminate your subjects. Next time you'll know: when you're taking a picture where the sun is visible amongst your subjects and they are all therefore in shadow, be sure to stare at the pretty light until you can't see it anymore.
