While working on a Power Point presentation on Hazardous Materials Transportation, I saw an opportunity to have a little fun at the expense of my employer and to give a quick nod to Chuck Palahniuk, one of my favorite authors.
A slide in my presentation featured a box of materials marked as hazardous being sent out to someone made up in a location totally fictional. I changed the shipping label to re-route the package to:
Tyler Durden
1 Paper St.
Trenton, New Jersey blah blah blah
An hour after submitting the finished file, my boss called and emailed me with a couple of concerns about the presentation:
"The slides look good. However, it may not be appropriate to send hazardous materials to a known terrorist."
To quote Fight Club, "the girl had done her homework". I was impressed that she caught the reference. She found it humorous but asked me to change it because she thought someone sitting in a presentation might find it offensive in the post 9/11 world that we live in.
I changed the shipping address to:
Dean Winchester
37 Crossroads Way
Athens, Ohio
She saw the revision and said nothing. Apparently someone that hunts and destroys demons on a CW show receiving hazardous materials casts our company in a better light.

Yes, you see, it's because that author isn't very good. I imagine you think that he is "deep" or some scenester bullshit, but actually he is very formulaic and hackneyed. She caught "Tyler Durdan" because BRAD PITT played him, and everybody knows about fight club. She didn't pick out the other bullshit, because well.... she didn't waste her time reading books that you find on the back of a toilet in an apartment shared by five 22 yr old douchebags starting their mortgage broker careers.
It's not because you're witty. Idiot.

Mr. Scorpio says productivity is up 2% and it's all because of my
motivational techniques, like donuts and the possibility of more
donuts to come.

This made me smile.
Good thing there is a rating that perfectly matches that result.

I am going to take the time I might have wasted googling the second reference and spend it in what is surely a more productive way: Typing out the word "FAIL" as many times as I can in the same length of time as I would have spent opening a google tab, copy/pasting the name into the search text box, waiting for the results page, and skimming the results to see if I could get an idea without actually opening one of the resulting links. Ready?
FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FA
There you go.
