This is probably the most spectacular form of large scale art bar the crop circle. It's popular in a village called Inakadate in Japan where they mix red rice with regular rice to create the images; other places are starting to follow, but Inakadate is the original (and probably the best, I couldn't be fucked looking at other villages).
The only thing that sucks about it is that it only lasts for as long as the rice is growing before being harvested.

If you mean the rice guys, I think they harvest the red rice as well as the white so it makes no difference.
