This is what I see every time I walk outside. The best thing about having a front yard that belongs to the city is that you can enjoy it as much as you would like, but you don't have to do any yard work.
Also known as one of the 5 points of DC's pentagram. I'm not going to speculate as to why the roads in DC form a very clean pentagram, but it's pretty neat regardless of the reason. Personally, I like to subscribe to any theory involving reptilian overlords, so if anyone has any information linking DC's road system to reptilian overlords, that would be excellent!
painting: 24x30 - oil on canvas - completed 8/08/09

Logan circle? I didn't know you lived in DC my man. I'm up on massachussetts avenue past the cathedral...I know your neighborhood though, not too far from the 9:30 club.

The thing is, every once in awhile I think up something ridiculous I want to throw together, but life gets busy, and some things are simply more important.

I miss the ridiculous FTW posts where dwarves eat people and what not. Don't tell me you've outgrown dwarf murder posts.
Also, going to see Ben Folds with the Spokane symphony in october. He was on your band list deal.

Pandora: you know, I read an extensive website on the subject once, that seemed very well done, by a normal person doing research and making observations. Not some crazy conspiracy nutjob. And a lot the connections they made were almost too close to be an accident. It's quite interesting. But I still was unable to find anything on reptilian overlords and I can't accept a conspiracy without them.
Rob: the problem I think is in the way it turned out while photographed. A lot of the textures and lighting look much different in person. Strangely, it actually seems to look less detailed when it is downsized, which is not usually the case for paintings.
Doodles: various light sources had an interesting effect on the lighting of and around the tree. That's one of the reasons I decided to paint it.

i think next i'd like to see you do something featuring a homosexual unicorn spearing bill o'reilly in the scrotum with his horn while his mane and tail flutter majestically in the breeze.
i estimate you could sell such a piece for at least 25 million dollars.

This is beautiful. Some people think the pentagrams have something to do with the city being designed by Freemasons, and that they have some sort of mystical significance. I don't know if it's true, but it's interesting to read about.

According to the internet, the plan of DC is designed to accentuate the "monumental core" of the city when back in 1901(?) congress hired the frenchman L'enfant to 'pimp our nation'.

Kaos: Kincaid... Don't even get me started. Seriously. He scammed religious organizations to make money for his paintings. That, and he is full of himself in the worst way. "Painter of Light" my ass. Walk into any art museum and you will find that almost every painting there will show a better example of someone who had a great concept of light.
I used to want to like Kincaid, just because I thought he deserved credit for his success. But he doesn't even deserve that.

____________
Thanks! There's a small orange-ish thing over to the left, does that count? The problem with something red, or colorful in the foreground is that it's such a dimly lit setting that even the brightest of colors would still end up being somewhat faded.
Though, I was actually considering putting something in the foreground, and then I remembered that I really wanted the tree to be the focus of the painting, because I really really like that tree.

Anyone, even I, can take a photograph and print it. Imagination is as essential to a painting as is the paint. Says the guy who can't paint, of course.

Because I see all of the elements of the painting, just in different placement. For the most part, that is what I see.
I just did not feel like everyone would like to hear me explain that, "I see this every time I leave the house, except the sidewalk is in a different place, and the road lines are further around, etc."
Also, I decided to leave out the homeless people and gay men walking dogs.

You painted this from pictures? Not being insulting or hypercritical or judgemental, just want to know: do you take pictures and then paint what's in the pictures, or do you use the pictures to refresh/enhance your memory of seeing the subject?
__________________________
For this one it was completely varied. I had a set of photographs that I used as reference, but a lot of it was from memory, and a lot of the times, I would be painting at night, so I would just walk outside and take note of how things looked. Once I just took the canvas outside. The photographs were actually far less useful than memory. I find as time goes on, I just use my memory more.
The painting itself was actually a bit on the made up side. The bottom half of the painting is of one side of the circle, and the tree and top half was from the other side. I also didn't paint the monument, because I simply did not like it.
To break it down, you will never see a photograph that looks like that painting.
