In the United States of America, here in the 21st century, there is still a large group of people who are considered second-class citizens, their rights often and routinely denied. They are viewed as a commodity at the best, a disposable pawn in usual circumstances. There is very rarely any effort made to communicate with them, only a passive attempt at enforced ideology.
These would be the children...
Recently, in a Middle School down in Mississippi, a 12 year old boy was expelled from classes due to having "Gang-Related" photos on his cellphone. The cellphone in question was confiscated during class as the child received a text message from his father. Now, although the child could have very well been punished for using the cellphone during classes, the rest of the incident grew to outrageous proportions.
First of all, although the school authorities had every right to seize the cellphone, their search of its contents seems questionable. And then when the police found the pictures of a 12 year Honor Roll student from a school with NO history of gang activity dancing in his bathroom at home, one has to wonder what leaps in logic were made? Of course, since the child neither pays taxes or votes, his voice & concerns are irrelevant.

This child's rights were grossly violated... but at least he survived.
What about all those times that America has deferred to the parents? We regularly put the parents' rights before those of the child. We only need to look at a handful of Social Service cases to see the truth in this. Crack whores who demand that they get their offspring back, based purely on the fact that they had the ability to spawn. These children will live in misfortune & misery because we mistakenly believe that they will somehow be "better off" with a horrible REAL parent as opposed to a wonderful FALSE parent. At least Social Services might occasionally check up on this family; it will take death for them to finally investigate cases of abuse in the households of religious fundamentalists. How many children will have to perish of simple, treatable diseases that selfish, delusional parents believe "Faith-Healing" will cure before we as a society accept that this is wrong? Any normal person would step in if they witnessed a man beating his child with a shovel... but what? We can't step in if god has told this man that he must beat the devil out of this child every day at 5pm?

Don't get me wrong; I think a lot of kids today have it WAY too easy. Too much anti-bacterial wipes, too many safe & plushy toys, too many trophies given out to everybody on all the teams. Unfortunately, it seems to be a case of extremes. It's like the proverbial 'boy-in-the-bubble' living down the street from a kid who gets regularly pimped out. In the end, they're both getting shafted. The thing is... nobody cares about either of them.
But who cares, right? They're not having any influence on the economy yet!

This is sort of a McCallum thing. People like your fiction. It doesn't mean they want to hear your social/political views.

How can you call them "second class children"? THEY ARE CHILDREN!
Growing up as a child if you brought something to school that wasn't supposed to be brought you would face at the very least losing the item, if not suspension or whatever. THAT IS BECAUSE THE ITEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LEARNING. Same goes with cell phones. Parents say their children "Need the cell, there might be an emergency, and they will need to be in touch with them". I remember elementary school as a kid, if my parents had an emergency and "needed" to get in touch with me they would call the school.
Every parent thinks that their child is special, and should be afforded special priveledges. Bull. That is the reason the parents probably allow the student to have a cell in the first place. Things like the kid getting expelled might be a little too extreme, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

If anything, our country puts its crotch spawn on a pedestal. Where else, in a world facing the threat of overpopulation, is the spawning process actually subsidized by the government? If you think about it, child-free people like myself pay more towards their K-12 education, health care, even their entertainment (sports, playgrounds etc) than their parents ever will. Yes, you can make a pretty sound-bite by saying that I'm putting that money towards the next Einstein/Beethoven/Degas etc. But let's face it, for every one quasi-Beethoven I'm funding a hundred thousand serial rapists, murderers, petty criminals, mimes, rednecks, and sundry philosophy majors, so I'd really rather keep my money or put it towards something useful, thank you.
As for discipline in our educational system, it's slack. Do you hear about students being beaten anymore? Are children being pressed into the Navy and forced to subsist on grog and maggot-infested bread? Do they get shot at regularly and have their arms cut off without anything but a bullet to chew on and a drop of laudanum? No. Your worst case scenario is someone brat's cell phone being confiscated and searched. And how does it answer? They're monoglots who emulate studio gangsters and can't tell a right from an isosceles. And to make matters worse, they actually think that this is acceptable.
You have to start as a second class citizen to become a first class citizen. Thanks to the pussification of the country, this will never happen.

This says a whole lot of nothing.
You bring up semi-arbitrary points about kids, lousy parents, and fucked-up schools, but I don't see a correlation between them. So, I'll connect the dots for you.
Public funded schools are a complete, absolute, utter failure in the US. The only thing more disgusting thant the incompetence of the adminitrators is the agendae pushed onto the teachers by their union, which gets rammed down the students' throats.

You know, I'd like to believe in the whole "live and let live" theory especially in
the case of religion but this faith healing thing is a tough one especially
when it involves children.
=====
Very true.
Without starting in too much on my anti-religion spiel, perhaps if society stops automatically deferring to religion, quits treating it as unquestionable, and holding its followers accountable for their actions, things like pedo priests, dead children, and general abuse of the laity wouldn't happen as often.
It should be live and LET LIVE. Which doesn't mean I'll do my thing and then turn my head as you do your harmful (to your children) thing.

I don't believe school officials should be allowed to search through a student's phone
without obvious probable cause.

It just astounds me that there are people out there
that believe praying to an entity will solve all of their problems.
Just as it blowes my mind that there are people out there who still think that the
sun revolves around the earth and that dinosaurs and man roamed the
earth together.

A case all bubbling over with prejudice and dogma.
If there was a universal perfect way, somebody would be against it, for a (in his eyes)
perfectly sound reason...)
Lately over here we had a public discussion if a 13 year old should be allowed to attempt
a round-the-world (solo) sailing trip.
some standpoints: she's too young, she's too inexperienced, parents are irresponsible.
She should be protected against this kind of enterprise. And on the other hand a lot of people
say her initiative should be encouraged. (my point aswell, but if i see her on tv i see
somebody who should obviously be the young for that.Dogma strikes again)
Let everybody decide from his point of view. Even bad choices create a new way, and
thereby creating another variation.just like evolution. And mother nature never suffered
from misplaced empathy.People die.young, old, geniuses and retards. If they did it while
making a dream come true, how can that be wrong?

It matters when his phone was brought to school. It matters when there's a possibility that he could effect the children at his school. To parents and teachers, it matters. There's nothing second class about a kid being treated like one. The teacher didn't take away the kid's Human Rights & as for any other rights- he really doesn't have any until he's an adult.
