I am priviledged enough to have had a unique college experience, I was in the second class of women to attend a formerly all male military college. When I decided to attend this college (The Virginia military Institute) I was naive in the ways of the world. I believed that I would be accepted by my classmates based on my merits, not on my gender. (although, not many people could tell the difference between the men and women, we all had our heads shaved!) I was sadly mistaken.
When I arrived the first thing I noticed (aside from the stench of body odor that permeated everything)was that the women were classified into 3 distinct sexual categories. These categories are hardset, meaning that you had to fit into one of them or you weren't considered a girl.
1) The Lesbians- these were the women that were there soley to be men. They didn't need to get thier heads shaved because more than likely, they were already shaved. These were the women whose gender could only be determined by knowing the gender of it's roommate. Most guys at VMI assumed that these women were at VMI to meet other women. Lets think about this for a moment. These women decided to come to a school filled with 1300 men to meet one of the 30 women? I think not.
2) The Sluts- these were the women who attended VMI to get a little deep dicking. These girls were so hard up for some dick that they would torture themselves for 6 months just to get laid. The sluts assumed that the men were so hard up for some poon that they would disregard the fact that the women looked more like me than the men did. Needless to say, most of the women were lumped into this category.
3) Other- these are the girls who were so adept at blending into the background that they defied a definition. This was definitly the best way to go, but the hardest to acheive. These girls had a way of just disappearing. They never got in trouble, there were never rumors spread about them. They just exsisted. These woman did nothing to attract attention to themselves. They were neither ugly nor beautiful. They were neither short nor tall. Just average. I can only remember 1 girl who fit into this category and I can't even remember her name.
The point of this little tirade is that, in the microcosim of a small, seriously fucked up college, you can see the very basic notion of our society (from a male perspective).
I have it on good authority that men generally think of women as belonging to one of these three sex categories. Think about it. No matter what you do, at one point in your life you have been classified into one of these three categories. Maybe you had sex with someone and he told a buddy of his about it. Rumors spread and multiply and voila, you are a slut. Or maybe you are the opposite. Maybe you have decided to wait until you are married. No sex with a man= lesbian.
I was trying to think of a male counterpart to the female classification, but I don't think it's possible.
Basically, regardless of our actions, women will always be defined by thier sexual exploits or lack thereof.
