Rush Limbaugh has been in the news lately because he's taken interest in investing in an NFL franchise, the St. Louis Rams.

Cue Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and every black sportswriter in the United States getting their panties in a bunch.

Limbaugh, a radio personality and conservative political commentator, has been accused of being racist by Sharpton and Co. That's a crushing-blow-of-an-accusation, considering the fact that over two thirds of current NFL players are black.

Before I go further, I want to let it be known I am by no means a fan of Limbaugh's, nor am I a Republican. In fact if I did vote, and I don't because America is a free country and I choose not to, I would vote democrat. In addition, I have never listened to Limbaugh's radio show or read any of his books. I could care less about his political views.

The problem with this whole situation is that it's no longer a sports issue. It has become a political issue, a racial issue. Limbaugh has said many controversial things throughout his career (you don't have to listen to him to know that). Sharpton and Jackson, metaphorical puppeteers of black people, will be damned if an alleged racist has such a high-ranking position in a franchise that employs so many black people.

There's one flaw with these racist accusations...Limbaugh has never gone on the record of being racist. When employed by ESPN a few years ago, he suggested (on-air) that black quarterback Donovan McNabb was being unnecessarily defended by the media because they desired to see a black quarterback succeed. An incredibly stupid thing to say on the air? You bet. A statement indicative of a full-blown racist? Not quite.

Further damning for Limbaugh is the stereotype (a relatively accurate one) that most black people exhibit liberal political views. In his favor, however, was the love-fest shown by media outlets not named FOXNews for Barack Obama and his presidential candidacy. So maybe what Limbaugh said about McNabb had merit after all.

The disdain and spite being shown by the likes of Jackson and Sharpton toward Limbaugh is laughable. These same men probably shot sticky wads of glee when "the Rooney Rule" was implemented by the NFL in 2003.

For those not familiar with the Rooney Rule, it requires that NFL teams interview minority candidates for head coaching positions before filling the vacancy. Apparently, 66% of the players being black isn't enough. Only a few blacks had head coaching positions prior to the rule's adoption...there HAD to be a racial conspiracy!

The irony of blackballing Limbaugh is that the Rooney Rule is more racist than Limbaugh has ever proven to be. Black people campaigned for equality during the Civil Rights movement, not special treatment.

Imagine if a white supremacist lobbied for a "Peyton Hillis Rule," which would require NFL teams to provide mandatory tailback tryouts for white players. The very idea of that rule would be met with harsh criticism, and rightfully so. If every starting running back in the NFL is black, there's a reason. If nearly ever head coach is white, there's a reason for that too, whatever it may be. The jobs should go to whoever is most qualified for the position, regardless of skin color.

Similarly, Limbaugh should be given a chance at ownership, despite the baggage he brings with him. If he wants to invest in a franchise, let the higher-ups of the NFL exercise due diligence and determine if Limbaugh is worthy of such a privilege. There's no need for pro-black figures to come out of the woodwork and say "Black players won't want to play for Rush Limbaugh." People play professional football because they're lifelong athletes who love the game and enjoy getting paid millions of dollars to play it. I doubt the interests and/or political views of the owner go through a player's mind as he blitzes the quarterback.

If black people want to avoid the stereotype that they all think the same, people like Sharpton, Jackson, etcetera need to shut up. I know they feel it's their job, their civic duty or whatever to speak out. However, they need to realize this is a sports issue, that's it! Rush Limbaugh isn't gunning to run the NAACP. He wants to invest in sports franchise, it's really that simple.

Now, the impossible has happened: Limbaugh, a generally slanderous figure, has become the victim. Nice job, Al and Company.

They work harder for it.

It's not a conspiracy against white people, blacks who have natural athletic abilities have been given the idea that if you have athletic talent- don't spoil it. It's a golden ticket. There are plenty of white athletes who did the same. Larry Bird, the Manning bros., and more. Hard work is a huge element of success in sports. What's the percentage of Cubans in the U.S. compared to the amount of Cubans in the MLB? They want something, and they're doing all they can to get it.

I know plenty of white kids that were REALLY athletic and could've made the bigs in a sport of their choosing, but they got complacent, or they gave up. It's not the end of the world if they do, because chances are they can get a job at their dad's business when athletics fall through for them.
--------------
Sorry, poly. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't understand your logic that 66% of black players earned their spots, while the whatever-percent-pre-Rooney-Rule white coaches didn't earn theirs. Art Shell, Ray Rhodes, Dennis Green and Tony Dungy (among others) were coaching before the stupid rule. Look, I understand why others like the Rooney Rule. I just think it's racist. How can people say we strive for racial equality when we give extra job opportunities to minorities?

The question isn't whether so-and-so is a racist, but rather, how racist is so-and-so? We're all racist to some degree, so just calling someone a racist is meaningless. There's a spectrum of racism, from zero to ten. Zero means you're probably retarded and can't tell the difference between a black man and a white man. Ten means you're dropping canisters of Zyklon B into phony showers full of Jews. Not too many people on either extreme of the spectrum. Think of a bell curve, with the peak around five. What does five mean? That you spout off racist statistics like the one about black people representing a greater proportion of the prison population than they represent in society? Telling racist jokes? Stereotyping Gooks as bad drivers? Polacks as stupid? Mexicans as lazy? We're all racist. The best we can do is try not to let it affect how we behave toward other people. But I sure as hell get sick of listening to niggers like Sharpton and Jackson piss and moan about racism when everyone knows they're on the upper end of that bell curve themselves.

Would you care to explain to me then why 66% of NFL players are black when they make up less than 20% of this country's population?

Submitted by polyamorousaj (user info) at 2009-10-21 17:09:23 EDT (#)

Because the former is a stereotype based on intelligence- all things being equal, a black man can be as intelligent or more intelligent as a white man- the latter is something that's been field-tested. It's not to say there aren't white players that could do well at tailback, there's just usually someone that can do it better and faster. Most white players make the decision to convert themselves to receivers, tight ends, fullbacks, or linebackers/defensive linemen- competition is less intense and you don't have to be as fast.

Black coaches, on the other hand, are NOT given a fair shake- hence the need to have the Rooney Rule. You said it yourself- 66% of NFL players right now are black. The potential base for coaches out of that group is larger than it is for white players. Granted, good players don't always make good head coaches, but it is inherent that all players who play at the NFL level will have at least SOME skill teaching their techniques to future players. Even if only half the black players have an interest in coaching, and ALL white players want to coach, the job-seeking field is equal- but the interviews are not apportioned as such.

Poly, taken from my post:

"For those not familiar with the Rooney Rule, it requires that NFL teams interview minority candidates for head coaching positions before filling the vacancy."

I know what the rule is.

Why does a small amount of black head coaches mean something isn't adding up? How is the stereotype black people aren't effective head coaches any more offensive than the stereotype white people aren't athletic enough to play tailback?

Haven't read the comments, but here's the flaw with your comments RE: The Rooney Rule.

It doesn't state they have to hire a minority candidate, just that they have to give at least one an interview. The NFL is old money, most of it held by racists. Just because there are few white tailbacks, doesn't mean they haven't gotten chances at it. That's what college football is there for- NFL teams can scout potential performance there.

Here's the rub with coaching- most coaches in any sport played at one point or another. If 66% of players in the league are black, yet there are only 6-10% in coaching positions, something doesn't add up. Without the Rooney Rule, coaches like Mike Singletary and Lovie Smith likely would've been passed over for schmucks like Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, or Pete Carroll- guys that don't have an inkling of what it takes to win in the NFL- as evidenced by their tenures.

It's a good rule.

They should concentrating on more relevant issues like, oh, I don't know, the rise of black on black youth homicide in Chicago. <<

I think we can agree on the "fuck Apollo" subject.

Sharpton and Jackson will never focus on anything relevant. Especially if it means criticizing their own culture. This would be tantamount to admitting that blacks are not infallible, and would make them less capable of whining about how whitey dun dem wrong.

See, I don't vote, but for another reason. I honestly believe that life is inherently unfair and that the fate of the nation would be better determined by a smaller, more organized band of people than it would be by the wishy-washy, bipartisan stagnant cess-pool we have today. Even under bad leadership, rebels could band together towards a common cause. Now they form "independent" parties or, worse, socially network.

In a civilized nation, quite frankly, Limbaugh would not be allowed to own a sports team. He would also not be allowed to vote or hold property. This is because he have already been shot in the face for being a blasphemously obese, hypocritical douche.

=======

Actually, if I'm not mistaken I do believe that they get 3/5 of a vote. Last time I checked anyway...
-----
I recently learned why slaves were counted as 3/5ths of a person. The number of people your State sent to the House of Representatives was based on the population of the State. The slave States wanted the slaves counted as people when it came to population. Obviously slaves could not vote or hold the office, so there would be more slave owners in the House of Representatives if the slave States had bigger populations. Non-slave States wanted the slaves to not count as people at all, since non-slave States were more populated at the time. 3/5ths of a person was the compromise.

Amazing what you can learn at the Lincoln Memorial.

I do disagree with you on one front though. I don't think Al and Co. are responsible for Rush's shortcomings as an owner. Goodell came out and spoke against Rush and ultimately he has to take responsibility for his previous actions. Combine that with just another sensationalistic media piece and you have a root canal far greater than any NAACP activist can be held accountable for. He should've remained silent about his intentions until a deal was set in place. Besides the current owners told him that most of the brush in the way would be cleared; clearly it was not.
------------
My problem isn't whether or not they're responsible for their shortcomings, but rather, why they even give a shit in the first place. Rush undoubtedly fucked up by letting his prospective ownership out of the bag too soon. If Goodell and the rest of the owners decide he's not worthy of owning a team, I'm cool with that. Like I said, let those in charge exercise due diligence. Pressure from Sharpton and Co. is going to turn this into a race war, instead of a decision about ownership.

And even that's irrelevant, really, because the majority of NFL team owners are blasphemously obese vaginas.

The problem I have with this post is that:

A.) You posted about sports on Uber (and didn't even have the decency to be Apollo)

B.) You're actually pretending that the NFL has some shred of dignity or self-worth. There isn't any sense of sportsmanship or honor left in the league; hasn't been since I've been alive. The NFL is the nation's crack whore; the sort that will do bareback anal for $10 and throw in a free scat session. Its players are not even human and should, in all decency, be required to be owned as slaves who are euthenized immediately after their functional life is through.

very nicely written

Sad thing I heard on ESPN radio the other night(late night coming home, and cd player was on the blitz). Mike Turico had on Keyshawn Johnson and some other black exfootball player and asked them what they thought about the whole situation.
----------------
It's kind of funny how a black radio host would invite two black players onto his radio show and ask them what they think about an (alleged) anti-black figure. I wouldn't be surprised if Al Sharpton's hand was a furlong up Turico's rectum during the interview. Keyshawn was one of the most notoriously selfish players during his heyday. He wrote a book called "Give me the damn ball." Now he gives a shit about who owns the team? They should have had some one on the show I can take seriously.

Here's the thing; Rush Limbaugh's racial views are irrelevant. Sharpton and Jackson are both racist, so they don't really get a say on this. What is relevant is that, like Sharpton, Limbaugh is a loud-mouthed, hypocritical, semi-literate, arrogant, blasphemously obese media whore who really doesn't deserve to live. Any civilized country would have put that fat fuck on an ice flow and sacrificed disgustingly obese anal vagina to the killer whales long ago.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. I mean how can a sport where you're watching a black person get clattered at least 66% of the time not be racist?

I say reform! Fuck off the shoulder pads and silly jerseys; bring on the grass skirts and spears, Rush Limburgh keeping the fuzzy wuzzies in place with his quad barrelled, magazine fed, fully automatic, elephant gun.

The other side can be coached by Nelson Mandela, who will glare balefully at his opponent through the sights of his rocket launcher. The cheerleaders chant "between the anvil of mass action and the hammer of armed resistance we shall CRUSH apartheid!"

Budweiser releases a flock of birds from its blimp, the spectators raise shotguns to the heavens and announce the kick off with a roar of gunfire.

Then it would almost be as good as proper football.

very nicely written

Sad thing I heard on ESPN radio the other night(late night coming home, and cd player was on the blitz). Mike Turico had on Keyshawn Johnson and some other black exfootball player and asked them what they thought about the whole situation.

Keyshawn said he was glad that Rush had been shown the door by the other partners of the ownership group, and went on to say that if he was still playing and Rush had been part of an ownership group he woulda had nothing to do with that team, even if they were superbowl bound. He said that it was good that it happened, and Rush Limbaugh had no place anywhere in the sports world.
I instantly got angry, because it was blatant racism.

Turico tried to play devils advocate, and say that many ownership groups were made up of people with diverse views. Keyshawn kept going on about how Rush was a racist, and his political views and commentary should keep him out of all aspects of the sporting world.

If you admittedly know little to nothing about Limbaugh then how do you know the level of his racism?
-------------
Rush Limbaugh wouldn't have the audacity to go on the record with racist comments and then play dumb when confronted with the accusation. Sharpton and Jackson have been grasping for straws trying to prove his racial prejudice. They have yet to brandish anything concrete that proves he is a racist. If they did, I wouldn't have written this. I spent a great deal of time reading back-stories on this issue to make up for my lack of personal knowledge on Limbaugh's stances.

By the way, Tom, why even read this post when the sports-category icon is right there? Your cock-craving self could obviously care less about bravado-driven athletics. Just curious.

Easy, Tommy boy. I still like you. I assumed your faggotry is renown on Ubersite considering the way you broke it to me unprovoked. Therefore, I saw no harm in bringing it up. As for touching a nerve, it looks like you're the one who got offended. Hence the -2. Hmmm...maybe you and Shlongy should hook up sometime. Then again, you both seem to be PMSing. Oh well, it would be a bloody good time!

Touched a nerve, eh? Well first off, I'm gay, so sucking cocks and anal depletion* kinda comes with the playing field. So I often do ask for such treatment. This clairvoyance indicates to me that you're either a dumbass or a psychic. I vote the former. But if it's the latter, please stop revealing my personal thoughts to the world. That is incredibly impolite.

And all I was saying is that maybe the debate over whether or not Rush Limbaugh is a racist and whether or not he should be able to buy a quiddich team because of it might not be the most important thing in the world, or in the world of sports for that matter. Didn't Tom Brady do something cool recently? I mean, I'm sure someone had to have kicked the ball extra good lately.**

Just my opinion though. If this also makes you angry, my advice would be to insist that I have sex with animals or am from Mexico. Those are usually pretty bad, right?

*Is that like oil depletion, where I reach peak anus and then am unable to sustain the world's need for anus?

4) I also hate the fucking Rams.

Limbaugh wants to buy a football franchise. If he wanted to buy a Subway sandwich franchise, nobody would care - not even Al Sharpton. Al and his racist (ohnohedidn't-ohyesIdid) chorus line should realize that they're not allowed an opinion on who buys what business, and appropriately stop talking about it.

Rob, did you ever see Rush's TV show he had in the early 90s? If you watched his face you could see he was constantly on the verge of laughing out loud. Most of his stuff is tongue-in-cheek, playing a role to make money.

"With half my brain tied behind my back, just to make it fair."
