Really? Equine retard? Just wrong. Seriously, the fewer developmental disabilities are used as insults, the farther we will progress toward acceptance and proper (ethical) valuation of people. I'm not just talking about PC bullcrap, either. People get hurt this way. Yes, this is the internets, but it's bad practice and it spreads more easily than is often noticed.
Though I agree that astrophysicists need to show more discretion in what they pander as fact or finding. Just because the theory fits the available observations doesn't make the theory right.
So the article. Yeah, I thought it was interesting.

Percentages would tell us that it would be impossible (or nearly) for what happened to create life on earth.....hasn't happened somewhere else amongst the universe.
------------------------
There is no accurate way to get a "percentage" for the likelyhood of earth.
Ask my personal opinion, and I am sure there is life.
_____________________________________________________
Yeah, there is. We are here. There is a 100% likelihood of an earth-like planet in the universe.
But now that I look at both of your messages, you were not disagreeing.

you can post fact after fact - im not disputing the evidence found by physicists that tells them that they know precisely fuck all about the universe and how it works, im disputing the rubbish that some of them publish in lieu of having anything remotely fucking useful to say about it all. im aware thats the best they can do at this stage of our understanding of physics and quantum, but a lot of it is still bullshit, and should be regarded as such.
i know quantum is weird, we all know quantum is weird, and the guys that study it are no less weird. this doesnt make them any deeper or amazing, theyre just trying (and often failing) to explain the - as yet - unexplainable.
im still gonna call bullshit when i see it. its like those lazy scientists who, when they see something they cant explain, like how water exists, turn to god. but in this case instead of turning to an imaginary friend to explain something, they couch 'i have no fucking idea what this means' in longwinded obfuscating language.

The weirdness of the universe is based upon experimental data that has been tested and retested and completely contradicts the seemingly "obvious" aspects of our reality. These hypotheses don't come from philosophy professors sitting on the verandah smoking cones, they come from physicists who get repeated results that make no fucking sense at all and have to fit that data into some sort of cogent framework.
Aspects of our universe like the fact that time slows as you move faster are not speculative weed induced ramblings, they're the only conclusion you can draw from the information we have at hand.
The universe, like I said, is fucking weird:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect
"The short and simple of it being that even in a perfect vacuum, in the complete and utter absence of ANY particles of ANYTHING, if you put two plates close enough to each other, they will experience a force of attraction due to quantized particle vibration. What particles, you ask? Why, the infinite number of particles that wink in and out of existence at every single point in the universe of course!
So if the plates are close enough together, the particles with vibration wavelengths too large are not allowed inside. Therefore, the infinite number of particles winking in and out of existence between the plates is smaller than the larger infinite number of particles winking in and out of existence outside the plate. Voila! A force is exerted! (and has been measured by real scientists in the real world)"

i find the use of overly complex language to say something quite simple and common-sense to be more condescending than my direct response.
for example: 'it just colours the vapidity with impressive lexicon' is just an overly complex way to say 'its just trying to sound clever when it isnt.' what a toolbag.

im not being condescending, i dont think i could be condescending at all to you, youre clearly intelligent enough to know when/if that would be happening.
im aware of the general point the author, and by extension you, are trying to raise, i merely reject this sort of philosophy as the bullshit that it is. it is pure meaningless hypothesis that has no value whatosever and is the worst sort of jaw-flapping self-important tripe that philosophy can subject itself to.
as i said in my first response, you can substitute the entire quote/paraphrase for anything at all and it doesnt lose its 'meaning' (or lack thereof) at all.
here IS some condescension to finish it off: youre better than that.

Hey id, I'm not suggesting that the universe as we know it is an instantaneous ordering of nothingness that we are misinterpreting as a linear-time reality, I'm just pointing out the point made by Brian Greene, the physicist, that our understanding of entropy results in the counter intuitive situation where the existence of our universe in linear spacetime is so unlikely that even outrageous possibilities like the random confluence of particles is, statistically, almost immeasurably more likely than what we take to be the current state of the universe.
Stop being so condescending, please. It's a statement about the bizarre nature of the entropic principle, not an actual suggestion about the nature of reality.

"The Fabric of the Cosmos" is a bit more mind boggling than "A Brief History of Time", if that's possible. I highly recommend it.
Example: It is trillions of times more likely that our universe has arranged itself into its current form (planets, suns, us etc), from nothing, for less than a nanosecond, that all our "memories" are false and that the universe will return to complete disorder after that instant, than it is that our perception of the universe as a persistent entity through time is correct.
Yep.
---
thats just bullshit that universtity-attending stoners use to try to get chicks to fuck them.
its also just as likely that all of existence as we know it is the acid-flashback of a giant, plucked, fur-chicken from some planet in the andromeda galaxy, and that when this chicken shakes off the flashback, life as we all know it will cease to ekist, having been merely the demented false dream of a giant dog-bird animal all along.

I've thumbed through it but never gave it a full pause. I've been reading a book by Guy Murchie called "The Seven Mysteries of Life" about once a year for the past 8 years that is pretty good. It doesn't quite explain the depths of the cosmos as much as it gets into a philosophical take on science. It really is a good read. T.S. Elliot's "A Brief History of the World" was a good read too, but that is basically a history book from creation on.

Please someone humour me and explain it. Do I feel small because it is going to swallow earth? or is it something else entirely?
===================
ok ok its like this see, from our perpective the earth and our solar system is a MASSIVE thing to consider. The distance between us (meaning the earth) and the closest planet by our standards is impossibly far. This is meant to try and give some perpective on the size of the universe as we know it. In my opinion the human brain cant really comprehend how large a thing the universe is. I mean in reality you may have to think of our sun as a grain of sand in shovel that is our galaxy, but when you consider the entire universe there are literally BILLIONS of shovels that are so far away that their LIGHT takes 13 billion years to get to us, traveling as fast as physically possible.
-------------------
Oh yeah, you are right too much for me to comprehend. I never did well at normal physics, let alone being able to get astrophysics.
====================
astrophysics I think deals with an untestable reality. It can only go so far. I mean think about it, eventually you cant learn anymore about something simply by "watching" it.

Please someone humour me and explain it. Do I feel small because it is going to swallow earth? or is it something else entirely?
