I think my father is having a middle aged crisis. I always dreaded this would happen, but now that it is, I am actually enjoying it. I can tell because his views on things are starting to change. For example: He mentioned buying an old bank and restoring it into a nightclub. WHAT!?!?! This is not normal Dad banter. He also said something the other day about quitting his very secure job and taking a riskier one that would involve weekly trips to California. I thought for a minute that he might be losing his mind, as this far from my father's actually personality. After hearing this, I was eerily reminded of myself.
It was then that I came to the conclusion that he is starting to become younger again. I think the general progression of life goes something like this:
Birth-Childhood-Maturity-Adulthood-Immaturity-Childhood-Death
I think my Pops just hit the Immaturity barrier. He seems to be letting go of the "conformity" associated with adulthood. I commend him for this and question it at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning him...Just the development process in general. Doesn't it seem like the more you learn and the wiser you become; the more you realize that the most important character traits are displayed during childhood? (E.g. having fun, caring about unimportant things less) Just seems like being told to grow up doesn't necessarily make a whole lot of sense, when my so-called role models are reverting back to the state I'm in now!
I like what is happening with my Dad. Him and I now share similar views. Looking at my grandfather and how he has changed over the years, I can see the same trend. I guess the moral of the story is, enjoy your 20's and early 30's. Don't loose track of what is really important in the whole scheme of things. For if you do, I think you will see that age/time will remind you that life is precious and shouldn't be wasted on frivolous things. So with that having been said, I guess I'm 23 going on 55...screw the antics in the middle!

SP - my dad is going thru the same things. He and I have been going to concerts together, wine tasing, and county fairs. I'm 24 and he is 55. We've become very close "friends". There are stillt things that I just can't tell him, but I spend every Sunday with him and my mom. Unfortunately she isn't going thru the same thing....I think she's just getting older. Great post!!

Well, when you get to that age and look back on your life you will think, "I didn't have all the fun I wanted to, hell, I'm gonna buy a motorcycle and fuck all the women I see."
I hope I'm always doing that. ;)
