To all those running Windows Nt 4.0, 2000, and XP at home, protect yourself now from continuing Microsoft bugs (MS.Blaster, etc.) in the DCOM code by permanently disabling DCOM services and port 135.
Visit www.grc.com/dcom and download Steve Gibson's DCOMbobulator program which will allow you to disable DCOM services on port 135. Read his detailed explanation on why Microsoft continues to plagued with security problems with this service and why you as a home user don't really need it turned on in the first place. While you are there, use his shields-up program to test how secure your machine is on the internet by jumping over to the freeware page. There are other potential security holes that you may be plagued with and don't even know.
www.grc.com/dcom reposted link incase doesnt work in paragraph.

I have been using Gibson's software utilities for almost 20 years now. Excellent stuff.
As for the WIndows vulnerability, I would just make sure to visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install the patches.

I say walk on the wild side and hope it fries.
A)Your employer will have to buy you a new computer.
and
B)All projects that you have been slack on, you will now have extra time to complete, since you now have the golden excuse of "That virus deleted all my work!"

i wouldnt trust anything that involves computer security that isnt directly from microsoft or whoever makes your antivirus software.
and the Ad-Aware people. that program rules.

I work with computers and have decided that they are gay, even though I use them for about eight hours per day.
Download the patches update your virus scanner, that should also work.
Thanks for that info but a decent firewall should protect you.
