Punk. God if i head one more looser 16-yr old band "high-school-band" claim to be punk i'm gonna go postal. Punk IS D.K., and The Numbsculls (local from So. Fla.), and the movie SLC PUNK. Salt Lake City IS punk.
Not this whiney fucking:
"my girlfriend dumped me and i'm sad, and my mommy wont let me have the car tonight, so i'll jump around stage and prent to be 'hardcore', which as far as I know, is something cool."
No. Youre not hardcore. You may be rock, of some lesser form or another, but not punk. Dying your hair, and wearing bobby pins on your torn clothes doesent cut it. And the Spiked collars and wristbands? Thats Goth shit. (I'd rather not redirect to someone else's rants, but tough shit) Refer to Maddox for his rant on Goth.
Greenday? They're the exception, and the ONLY exception to the rule. they've been doing this for so long that they're punk if they want to be. They're rock too. They kickass, so the rest of you can fuck off if you dont like them. (yeah, here come the -2's). Now, Good Charlotte (and the 400 clones like them)-- thats emo, maybe some ska. Some of it is good music, but not punk.
And since when did punk become more a sellable/marketable music genre and less a mindset? What happened here? Punk was supposed to be the anti-mainstream. Any band becoming mainstream was no longer punk, and therefor only rock. Now, mainstreamed punk bands get a record contract, MTV airtime, and constant replay status on the all your 'favorite' commercial radio station. And you know what supports all this? The damned screaming fans who all look alike, think alike, act alike, and still believe they're soecial individuals. Yeah, special... Special Ed. Heads up "Spike", youre not unique. Rinse the purple shit outta your hair, youre not surprising anyone. You don't need holes in your ears big enough to get your undersized dick into- or 8 earrings up the cartilage of your ear. People did that in the 60's to piss off the squares. Now- it's the squares that are doing it! (No, I'm not a hippie, or that old, and thanks, Carlin- needed to borrow that bit). Oh, and Hot Topic? Yeah, it sucks too... the T-Shirts are cool, but thats it. Oh, and the torn clothing thing? If you buy it like that- you suck. Torn clothing is a punk thing- a quote from a friend:
"Our shit looks that way cause we got fucked up tryin to fuck someone elses shit up"
You get torn jeans from moshing, fighting for the hell of it, bikeing/blading/boarding and getting torn to shit because you flew across a 4 lane road and got slammed by a truck at 45mph. Not pre-built saftey-in-mind "skate parks". NOT because Tony Hawk has clothes that look like that. Stop this fad crap. Do something because it means something to you. Rebell against "the machine" because you have a reason... not because your parents don't let you out after 2am.
<random targeted hatred of ricers>
And quit whineing about you fucking honda civic. It sucks as much as you do.

Who gives a shit? What does it matter if it's punk, ska, metal or f'ing cheesy pop? If you don't like it, as The Offspring said, "just don't listen to it".

I can't think of a decent reply to this so I'll just use a quote that I think pretty much sums up the whole "I'm punk thing"
"You'll find (that) empty barrels make the most noise."

And if you don't know who John Lydon is you sure as hell arn't no punk

Song number one is not a fuck you song
I'll save that thought until later on
You want to know if there's something wrong?
It's nothing. everybody's talking about their hometown scenes
And hurting people's feelings in their magazines
You want to know what it all means?
It's nothing.
Fighting for a haircut?
Then grow your hair
Crying for the music?
I doubt you really care
Looking for an answer?
You can find it anywhere
It's nothing.
Life is what you want it to be
So don't get tangled up trying to be free
And don't worry what the other people see
It's nothing.
fugazi summed it up pretty well there.

I would just like to add that all tis emo, whiney, "life's so awful' crap really annoys me too. As do the kids who run around with their identity crisis, not just the faux punk/emo/goths, but all the decidedly seperate cliques that tell you who you are by the music you listen to. These are the kids who get older, go to college and join frats and sororities because they need a group to belong to. I'm also negating my -1 w/ a +1, sorry, just a little slip of the click!

You are terribly mistaken about the "my girlfrien dumped me, blah blah blah" as being considered punk by htese 16 yr. olds. They don't consider themselves punk either. They're EMO. Or screamo, or emo-hardcore, indie-emo, there's different genres. It originated from punk, yes, but is not classified as punk. Give these kids a break, they just piss you off so bad because you know, deep down inside YOU WERE THAT KID. It's ok. We all were a little bit. Angst ridden, trying to find your niche, wanting to be different but not wanting to be tormented for it because that's what happens in high school. But are right about MTV, it sucks and i gave up on it a long time ago, and the manufactured "worn look" is outrageously ridiculous, but don't diss Hot Topic, I love a lot of their panties. 3 for 12 bucks!!

Wow, well I know how to hit a nerve around here. people take my rantings a little too seriously sometimes...
Street punk is right:
-------------------------------
I think NoFx is fucking great. They can be political, emotional, and down right hilarious. They are pretty good about not giving a fuck and making fun of "punk rock mentality." That's why they rock and you can not measure a band by one song. You can't say "Green Day is not punk because one of their songs delt with different subject matter."
I believe I have heard Green Day do many rebellious and angst ridden songs but punk music isn't about just that. Look at Black Flag.
-------------------------------
I'm not saying they HAVE to fit in to a certian CATEGORY. I'm saying what we have on MTV today, is sort of like britney spears calling herself goth, because she has a video with a snake and a guy with leather on appear in it.
Hey, Ref
----------------------------------------------------------
you rant about being punk and you end your post with a decidedly unpunk band -pm5k.
punk is a lifestyle. just like goth. you can listen to country and still be punk.
you fucked up your whole post by doing what everyone else does -associate a lifestyle with a type of music. die.
----------------------------------------------------------
when the fuck did I say I was punk? I kinda like the music, got a few friends who qualify as punk, But personally I'm more metal. and didnt you just contradict yourself there? Youre saying punk is a lifestyle (i agree there) and then say i'm an ass for saying the same thing? Oh, and die.
Sec- same thing for you- I'm BITCHING ABOUT WHAT YOURE FLAMING ME FOR. These whiney (probally like you) 16yr olds make it into this big deal, and buy matching clothes, and all that shit. I'm not saying you have to pick punk/not punk. I'm pissed that these whiney emo bands think they're something more. I'm not saying anyone shouldnt listen to it, (i happen to find it annoying, but thats my opinion, and from the -2s, most poeple dont agree, and thats fine. we have an open forum for a reason) I'm just saying that it's become a fad, a trend, they're cloning themselves faster than the ebola virus, and it's damn irritating. +1 for myself, because it's my damn opinion, and it doesent suck that bad.

You guessed correct poster!
Here is your -2 for mentioning the band Greenday, who if they are to be considered "punk" it would have alot more to do with the fact that they are punkasses rather than the genre of their material.
They write pop songs and play them with wailing guitars. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's been done to death before by a million bands that came before them.
Fucking kids and their music.

Skunk, gc is not ska. They are emo-poppy punk. I actually like some of their shit, not all but some I find well written. I hate new found glory. They make my skin crawl. Ska is just a form of calypso (island music) mixed with punk rock. Atleast the newer waves. There are a few ska bands without horns. Operation Ivy and Squad 5-0 to name a few. It is common but not necessity.

I believe I have heard Green Day do many rebellious and angst ridden songs but punk music isn't about just that. Look at Black Flag. They did a song called "TV PArty Tonight," which was a drinking anthem. No angst or politics involved. Punk should really be what you make it out to be and I believe it is about independent thought, so to say one band is more punk than another is really contradicting what punk is to begin with.

Yeah, you are probably right. NOFX is really pretty overrated. But still, the Vandals, Agent Orange, Bad Brains, Fugazi, the Circle Jerks, BLACK FUCKING FLAG, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, and the Exploited were overlooked too.
I just didn't really like Danzig/Samhain/the Misfits or however all of those played together.

Itchy did you just say NOFX is more punk than Danzig(well not Danzig the band, thats hard metal) but with the misfits, that and the ramones, shit one of the romanes is in the new misfits, but back in the 70s the misfits and the sex pistols were punk, but NOFX doesnt deserve to be in that list at fucking all.

If Green Day is the standard by which you measure punk, or even Danzig for that matter, I can't even begin to have a conversation about this.
Thank you whoever mentioned the Clash. But you forgot the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, G.B.H., D.R.I., the Decendents, NOFX, the Subhumans, Gorilla Biscuits, T.S.O.L, Suicidal Tendencies, old Corrosion of Conformity, the Faction, Stiff Little Fingers, Operation Ivy, and a bunch of others these seventh-wave revival bitches will never know about.

"No time to search the world around cause you know where I'll be found when I come around."
(Green Day)
vs.
"London's burning! London's burning! All across the town, all across the night everybody's driving with full head lights black or white, turn it on, face the new religion!"
(The Clash)
That being said, I think I'm going to disagree that Green Day is punk. Not only can they not write it lyrically but they can't play it musically. I mean, I like 'em as much as the next angst-ridden, rebellious teenager, but eh. Not punk anymore so than Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Newfound Glory, etc.

If you have to define punk, you aren't it. If you think you -must- have a mohawk, and wear a handmade jacket with "The Casualties" or other bands hand-stiched on, then you are trying to define it a little too hard. Listen to what you want to, and leave it at that.
