So I'm seeing ads for the new Napster, you've seen it, the one you have to pay for. Is this really going to take? Are that many people going to suddenly decide to pay when they can still get the same thing for free? It's crossed my mind since I've already made the move to get Sirius Satellite radio in my car, why not take all the steps? Then I realized I can still download for free, so paying for Napster? Hmmm, how would you put it....FUCK THAT.

Yep, there's lawsuits that will probably drive the move toward pay mp3 services, but at the same time there's an endless supply of stupid college kids with lots of bandwidth and vast storage space outweighed only by their own ignorance. And there's smart people who know enough to not share all their files online. I think anymore I only have about 6-7 shared files (they were failed downloads at that) compared to my 350+ songs in other files and 1500-2000 other songs stored on cd's (I got those directly from friends). But I can still download from Kazaa and such. Does anyone else?

On another note, I'm curious if any of the money awarded to the RIAA is going to the artists or if it's just lining the RIAA's wallets. Anyone know anything about this? I'm curious after reading an article supplied by Hidden101 in another post of his, http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030910.wbmath0910hom/BNStory/Front/inhtm.html

The other thing I have against pay services is I don't download much anymore. I'm lucky if I hear more than 4 songs a month that I'd really want. So why would I pay $10 for one to two songs? There's the pay-per-song options out there, but at $1 a song, it's more cost effective to just buy the whole cd, then I'm guaranteed decent quality and I get all the packaging and the case and stuff (big deal!), in addition to a hard copy.

Anyone else have a view on this?

It seems like there's two different types of dj's, the ones who write and create music (like you mentioned) and those that just mix other people's stuff, like Paul Oakenfold and Sasha & Digweed. I think most people think of the mixers when they hear "dj". For those who create and write I think they should come up with a different term for themselves, as "disc jockey" was a term for someone who just played records or cd's in front of a crowd.

Don't get me wrong, it's all fine listening, and a title is only a title, it really doesn't matter.

right manfre, but if you dont pay them, they cant make a living at it, and have to do something else to pay the bills, etc. plus they wont have the money to distribute it to your favorite stores that youre burning down.

and if you say "well they dont have to distribute it, just put it online" well... people arent going to put the same amount of work into something if its just a hobby outside of work, you know this.

by the way, heres DJs that make their own tracks, or remix stuff so masterfully that you barely hear the original in it:
BT, Timo Maas, X Press 2, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden, Avalanches, Mauro Picotto, Ferry Corsten, DJ Rap, Grooverider, Groove Armada...

these are the ones i can think of off the top of my head. there are TONS more.

see, manfre, here's what im saying:

if you download music, and never pay the artists, whats their motivation for releasing music?
they arent making a living anymore cuz no ones buying their stuff.

You've got to pay to play
or it goes away

You're not hurting 'The Man'
you're only hurting the artists.

A REAL musician writes and plays music because he loves it. Because its fun for them. Not for the money.

If your in it for the money then your not a real musician. A real musician is someone who lays there and a song pops into their head and they write it down and work with what they just thought up of. Not someone who sits there trying to brainstorm and pop out some shit that will make Number 1.

No offense but I dont really consider DJs real musicians. A lot of DJs I know just remix songs and shit. Hows that being musically inclined? Sure it means you can mix a kick ass song. But its someone elses song.

Only when I hear a DJ mix his own song without using anyone elses music is when I can consider them a real musician. But Ive seen very few of that.

DJMatt- If a musician's only motivation for making music is money, then are they really an artist?

Manfre- I can't believe there's a place that sells burned cd's. Perhaps that guy should be made king. That's balls!

I moved files into a shared folder because it enabled me to download more songs at a time, I think I got up to 10 at once or something. Maybe that was audiogalaxy (the best mp3 source, ever). I forget now, I haven't had high speed internet for about a year now, I only get to download at my friend's place now, and that's when I want to disconnect all my stuff from my latptop to take it over.

Yeah hes right on the Seaside boardwalk in Jersey. Hes at a corner. He sells speakers and shit too. I think most of its either used or it fell off the truck. Ive gotten about half a dozen CDs from him and the covers are regular paper with crappy looking scan of the original, same with the back, the CD is actually really good though. It doesnt have that stupid ass sticker on it. Its got the words printed right on the CD. The guy seems to know what hes doing. Also the plastic wrap is the kinda stuff you buy at like a Costco, BJs, Price Club or somewhere you can buy shrink wrap from for dirt cheap.

Its not a big place or anything like that. Its just like a small lil boardwalk store that sells burned shit. Popular burned shit. Tunnel Vs Soundfactory, Webster Hall, Exit, and some big name Rap CDs too. I dont think he DLs any of it and puts it on. I think he buys it then makes copies and sells em. But there were a few CDs I got from him that when I looked for the CD name and everything online I came up with nothing. Like Club Xtreme 2003 at Seaside or something like that with Seaside in the title. I think that was his own shit or whatever.

Either way its like a Napster store.

I've noticed that it's getting harder and harder to find what I'm looking for online. The RIAA is winning because everyone is moving their files out of their shared folder. I did it too. How much is the new napstar charging for this? I used to use is as a kind of personalized radio. I miss being able to mix whatever I wanted to on a cd, but damn if I'm going to buy a whole cd just for one song. I have spent way too much money over the years on what turned out to be utter crap.

I dunno about any of you. But I just finished DLing the newest Top 10 Records last night.

I could give a shit less if they sued me. Wanna know why? Theyd have a counter suit on their asses so quick theyd shit themselves and settle faster than you can fuck Kristy Swan.

Why would I do such a thing? To shut them the fuck up.

Id then go on and burn every CD store in NJ. Yes every. Except that one on the boardwalk down in Seaside that sells burned CDs for 5 bucks. That place is alright. Theyre kinda like a Kazaa. Just without the DLing.

Fuck the RIAA. All they need is one rather hateful, angry 20 something to sue which makes the kid snap and end up in a counter-suit for harrassment, invasion of privacy (how else could they find out your DLing music and who you are?). Im sure theres a few other things to sue for. Purhaps Defamation of character?

Id have them confused worse then a darkie in a grammar bee.

Sorry I had to throw that racist comment in. I thought it was funny.

I still use Kazaa on occasion. I'm careful to move my files after I download them, though. I'm with whoever said they only download singles from bands with no other good stuff. I may download "Baby One More Time" because there is no way in hell I'm buying the Britney Spears cd. That's right, "Baby One More Time". Go ahead, berate me.

Since the whole downloading of music started, I have always downloaded what I wanted to buy BEFORE buying it. I will pay for good music, and I have absolutely no problem doing so. I support all of the bands I know and love this way, and will continue to do so. The RIAA, however, doesnt like the idea that I or others should be able to sample what it is that we're about to buy, and it occurs to me that they can fucking deal with it. I've blown enough cash on crap CD's, and now that I have a choice, I won't go back to doing just that.

Besides, I try to buy (and sell) through used CD shops. It still end up buying a few crap ones, but its usually okay cuz I only spent about 5 bucks a pop.

DJMatt: Actually, the Canadian dolar is way up these days, and we're more along the lines of US$3=CAD$4

Surprisingly though, that's kind of a bad thing for a lot of companies in our economy seeing as we export so much to the USA.

It's a good thing for consumers though, more purchasing power.

killbill, $10 canadian is like $5 usa, right?
lol im not so sure thats gonna happen.

heres what i think:
they release all the mp3s or whatever. no one can stop that.
they put out, say, 5000 copies of a CD. make them collectors items.
people would pay lots more for them, probably close to $1000 or some such thing for a really solid album. have it signed by the artist, have a collectors number and all that.

thoughts?

I will buy cd's if they are good, and I try to make it to concerts. Look at it this way, I spent about 300 dollars last year on concert tickets, that I wouldn't have gone to had I not been introduced to the bands via free MP3s. The big companies should put all of their money to media players and concerts. Still sell cd's, but lower the cost by thinning out the execs. I would buy a new cd if it cost only ten bucks (canadian).

I don't mind paying for something that is good. But hell, I think the best cd I've bought in the last year came out in 1993, and that was Anthrax's Sound of White Noise. If there was good music being released, I'd buy it. Happily. But the other thing I run into is I can never find what I want at any store, even the little independent ones. Case in point, a band makes it big, gets mad airplay, but little does everyone know that they also have a cd that came out 2 years earlier, is twice as good, and even has a song on the radio. It took me a year to be able to buy Ignition by The Offspring. They'd been playing "Kick 'Em When He's Down" for months after "Come Out and Play" had come and gone, but I couldn't buy the Ignition record anywhere. Hence, my frustration with RIAA and distribution. And that's just one instance of many. Try finding Agent Orange records, or old Chemical Brothers records. Just can't be found, at least not around here. And I'm tired of driving everywhere. Why spend an hour in transit to get a record that plays for 45 minutes? Seems like a bad return to me. I can download, walk away, and go pop on a porn flick. Or grill up a steak. Or get totally wasted!

I'd like to buy music directly from the musicians. I wouldn't have any trouble with that. No middleman, and bad music will go by the wayside in a flash.

why would you pay when you can get it for free?

well.... call me old fashioned, or addicted to music, but i go out and buy CDs all the time. the only things i really download anymore are the occasional single from someone who's whole cd i KNOW i wont like, or live mixes/stuff that isnt out on cd anywhere.

i believe in paying artists for their work.

my brother and i were talking the other day about ideas to get people to pay the artists.. we came up with a couple ideas, if anyones interested in discussing them.
