MERCHANTS WANT PAPER TO NAME PROSTITUTES
-Rob O'Dell-
OCEANSIDE - The skin trade again dominated the discussion at the South Oceanside Merchants Association meeting Wednesday.
But unlike past meetings, business owners were not frasping at straws for solutions to drive the world's oldest profession out of Oceanside. Instead, the business owners expressed concern that a new opportunity to help rid the city of prositution was being wasted by the area's local paper, the North County Times.
Unveiled several weeks ago by Oceanside Police Chief Michael Poehlman, the new program would list the names of both prostitutes and their costumers convicted of either prostitution, or the solicitation of a prostitute.
North COuntry Times Publisher Dick High *addendum: what a horrible name...* said last week that the paper would not accept the notices which where to have run as paid advertisements in the classified section. High cited several reasons for not accepting the ads, including the "tackiness factor." But more importantly, he said printing the ads could open up the paper to similar ads from the private citizens of other cities.
High also said the ads would give a "black eye" to a city that has made great strides in improving its image over the past 10 years.
But Councilman Jack Feller, a guest at the merchants meeting, said he disagreed "100 percent" with the paper's decision.
Feller said naming the convicted would make customers think twice about coming to Oceanside for prostitutes. He said the ads would not make the city look any more "tacky" than having prostitutes walking the city streets does.
"If [the ads] are tacky, then our city is already tacky," he said.
Nine out of 10 business owners in attendance supported naming those convicted. A bew business owner from Carlsbad said he didn't know enough about the issue to have an opinion.
Zell Dwelley, owner of the Beach Break Cafe, said she felt the program would be effective because a similar program was effective in the city about 15 years ago. in the 1980s, the Blade-Citizen, a forerunner to the North County Times, ran the names as free public notice.
Because prostitution is a misdemeanor, Dwelley said, there is little deterrent for the activity. However, she said naming prostitutes and their customers changes that.
"Putting the names in the paper had an effect. There was a consequence," Dwelley said.
Jimmy Knott, the resident representative from nearby Las Salinas mobile-home parks, agreed.
"The power of public embarassment is a tool," Knott said.
Some business owners said the program would dry up the clientele for the prostitutes who work local streets, primarily Coastal Highway at the south end of the city. Owners also said that most customers are well-to-do residents from other cities, who could be dissuaded if their names were in the paper for their family, and wives, to see.
Poehlman said the department will proceed with plans for a program to publish the names of convicted prostitutes and their customers, or johns.
The johns would be named for being convicted of soliciting a prostitute.
Police Cpl. Scott Wright said the weekly newspaper the Coast News has already made the decision to print the ads.
Wright said he expects The San Diefo Union-Tribune to make a decision by Friday.
In addition, Wright said that the names will be read on local radio station KFMB 760-AM on its morning show hosted by Rick Roberts. The Police Department also plans to list those convicted of prostitution and solicitation on its Internet Web site: www.oceansidepolice.com
SYNOPSIS: oceanside business owners and police are teaming up to make a list of all known prostitutes and clients of prostitutes, and publishing it in 3 major papers.
first off, i think this was a horribly written article. aside from all of the obvious FANBOYS mistakes, a wider diction could have been used. also, neither i nor anyone ive spoken to since ive read this have had any idea there was prostitution in oceanside. that includes my father, an adamant follower of the news, and my international affairs teacher, who lives in oceanside...
so, apparently, this is going to cause a lot of controversy... behind closed doors. i dont think anyone will actually step out to openly defend prostitution, but i think that i might as well.
why is prostitution illegal in the first place? isnt that the same as dating a woman nowadays? i mean, you lose money either way, and the sex isnt guaranteed to be meaningful. so why is it illegal? i think (and this is just an opinion) that prostitution is shunned because of the church. the church wishes that all sex be done after marriage through the church. when they saw that people didnt care for the church as much as they cared for orgasms, they used their powers to make a seemingly innocent crime vile. and isnt prostitution innocent anyways? its a simple act between two people, where money is exchanged for a service, and no one is hurt. granted, if this act also involves adultery, it is wrong. otherwise, whos business is it to know of this anyways?
what really makes me angry here is the fact that these people are about to be slandered in front of thousands, if not millions, by people who basically have no business in the matter either way. do they realise how many lives will be ruined, simply because they have issues with being 'tacky'? so you have some prostitutes, big deal. because you dont like the fact that some woman is selling her body to random men, youre going to make her private occupation known to all, and also squander any chance of that man living a normal life. why not sew a big scarlet D on their chests for Deviant? what right does anyone have to do such a thing anyways? im not sure, but i think that its illegal to look through police files, compile a list off all known perpetrators of prostitution and solicitation, and then release that list (without consent of those people) in many medias to the public?
please, just tell me why it is that prostitution is so wrong, and why these people are allowed to make such scintillating lists open to the public. id really like to know what the hell is wrong with people...

Prositution doesn't hurt anyone? That's like saying a rabid squirrel is harmless. Although you have a point on how 'easy' women seem to be nowadays on just dates, there is a definitive difference between prostitution and date sex. Through date sex, atleast there is an attraction between the two people to begin with. Through prostitution, AIDS and other various sexual diseases are obviously more rampant, and shared with many 'customers' once divulged, or to the participating madam. And if you would like to make it legal, how would ages work? Eighteen or older? Fifteen? When they're old enough to drink? And if it was made legal, think of the ads! Right after the Ivory Soap commercial, a gang of women stand in front of their sponsors, say the routes they work off of, and play with themselves on television to rouse men. It should not be easier for women to sell themselves as a commodity. That's asking for all women in the United States to lower their value.
"Hey David! Can I buy ya a birthday dinner?"
"Nah Sue, I've been planning on spending my sweet sexteen with 'ol Lovely off Trinity and 3rd."

I am a red-blooded man, but prostitution should remain illegal. Why? It will not clean up the streets, because these brothels will consist of only over-18 girls. All the child prostitution will increase, because it'll be cheaper to get a girl off the streets (no taxes, mark up for overhead costs, etc.)
Yeaaahh.. that makes a shit ton of sense.. doesn't it? They have age regulations for working in
any OTHER type of job, why would this be any different if prostitution were legal? It wouldn't, quit talking out of your ass.
Anyway, yes we live in a Judeao-Christian based society. And know what? That's what made America and Canada great. Last decade or two the continent has been going downhill....the decrease of morals and ethics in the government is part of that decline.
You can't argue with me, because i'm right.
Right about what? What decrease in morals and ethics???? Please explain.

"you cannot legislate morals; dont try. The people want prostitution, let them have prostitution. They want to gamble, get ready to take their money. As long as you let people do what they want, as long as they dont bother anyone else, then who is being hurt? Let man be master of his own fate."

What consenting adults do in private is their own business. I think the real issue is making sure that the parties involved are:
a. adults
b. consenting
In that case, I don't really care. I think it would be much nicer to legalize it, tax it, and get it off the streets and into the yellow pages.
But don't come crying to me when fire starts shooting out of your dick.

EvilZurr:
You are right about the gang violence. I have seen fights between the bloods and crypts in front of the Regal downtown. It's awful. Growing up I knew exactly which neighborhoods were claimed by which gangs. I was heartbroken to hear about that boy that was shot by stray gunfire in the San Diego Street neighborhood. All because some gangbangers wanted to steal a car.
However I do think that Oceanside is making an honest effort to clean up. They are supporting more programs directed towards youth and homeless. I think that as they deal with things like drugs and violence the prostitution will lessen as a result.
We just need some motivated individuals on the City Counsel, and they need to get rid of Esther Sanchez.

im in vista.
anyways, the only thing ive seen close to prostitution is the peep show a few blocks north of the cinema off of mission, and even that isnt risque.
the worst problem in oceanside right now is the gang warfare. i know, its not that big of a deal. still, if you walk mission to the pier and back, you will see a group of 3 men (not to be racist, but theyre hispanic usually) meet another group of men and either duke it out, talk shit, or just stare at eachother with bad looks until a cop comes by and looks at them.
either that, or the fact that innerworld sells bongs and advertises right there. no one cares, for some reason. also, innerworld sells porn mags/posters to minors, and no one cares. id like to keep it that way, because i buy most of my posters from innerworld...

By the way. I agree that prostitution is not a major problem in Oceanside. I do remember though when prostitutes used to line the streets 24/7 in front of the Dolphin Motel. It definately is not that bad anymore.

Zurr: I'm sitting in my office in oceanside right now.
I guaruntee there is prostitution going on, because there is this HUGE source of customers sitting right along the highway: Camp Pendleton.
There is that strip club on Oceanside blvd, about 2 blocks down from the main gate? I wouldnt be suprised if a few of those girls aren't turning tricks.
Not to mention the big federal case going on right now against 3 san diego city officials for trying to do and end-run on the "no touch" law for all the strip clubs around here, with big backing from Las Vegas.
Prostitution, especially near a military base, is Big Money.
I cannot recall any specific example myself, but I bet if I ask a few of the marines here with me they'll tell me right where to find a few girls.

(i hope this didn't get posted twice...i just wanted to add something)
Also, i'm not sure if i'm for posting the names of johns/hookers who get caught.....true it will embarass them and maybe they'll think twice about doing it again, but at the same time it does ruin their families' names. hmmmmm. I say: don't post the names, but make the punishment harsher (jail time, or huge fucking fine...or both....)

hey zurr,
Where I live we have a 'police log' in the dialy newspaper. It gives names of people arrested and lists their address, court date, preferred disposition of case etc....no official publishings quite like this. (and hopefully it stays that way)
I've had a family memeber listed on one of these logs I've mentioned above and I have to say it was pretty damn embarassing for the him, me and the rest of my family. I don't feel like people from all over town should have access to this info and be able to make judgements against somebody by info printed in the paper that could quite easily be misconstrued, especially when everybody is supposedly innocent until proven guilty. This particular instance I speak of is thankfully not pertaning to solicitation, I think the humiliation would have been ten times worse it that were the case.
My point....Not only will these "criminals" have to live with the embarassment of knowing that EVERYBODY knows what they did--OR DIDN'T do (in freakin private for christ's sake) but what about the other family members involved!!! They would potentially be destroying lives by making this public info. A child molester or rapist I could understand, but two consenting adults engaging in sex for a fee, pffft, that is just ridiculous. to each his own! (all statements made correspond w/ my opinion that prostition should not be illegal in the first place)
What exactly are these people trying to prove by doing this?? I'd love to hear their arguments as to why they are so against the actual act of prostitution
Who makes up this committee, are there an equal # of men and women?

I think prostitution should be legalized. We live in a society that was started by Puritans and a lot of that absurd Puritanical stuff remains. You're right, it's Bible-based. It's stupid. Legalizing it will clean up the industry and protect the women.
