This thread is in response to a thread I just read (rhymes get it) outlining the lunacy of Christianity. I had a long drunken rant on this very subject not too long ago at my favorite watering-hole with a good (very liberal) friend of mine. I've come to the conclusion that religion is a coping mechanism that helps the human mind to explain away the fact that we are all very alone in life, and will all become very nonexistent after death. The reason for this is simple.
The human mind does not have the capability to imagine it's own termination.
It's true, try it out. Try and think, imagine, ponder on what "absolute nothingness" would be like. Black, silence, nothing. Not even the senses to tell you there was nothing... just nothing. It's impossible, we don't know what that feels like. The act of identifying the nothingness has already crossed the threshold into consciousness.
Now, that is the reason for our false idols. The Christians have Jesus Christ. The Muslims have Allah , and the Catholics have the Pope (haha). Notice a common theme here? Very similar structures. All are theistic (with the exception of Buddhism and religious Satanism) and have certain beliefs and practices held in high regard. All are practiced, enforced, and taught by human beings. None can explain away the scientific fact of evolution, or Geological History. If you were looking down into this world from an outsiders point-of-view, what would YOU think?
The existence of a God is not logical and makes no scientific sense.
If modern religion is correct and we are God's creation, and we are alone in the universe, why then did he make the Universe so vast? Surely we only need one solar system to accomodate our planet at the very largest.
If modern religion is correct in it's belief that the Lord is the only perfect being, why then do they also believe in a place called Hell?
This doesn't make sense. If God were perfect and all forgiving , how could he condemn someone to eternal hell for their sins? If God were all forgiving, how could there BE a hell in the first place? Just my feeble attempt at musing, let me know what you think.

Yeah, just reply to Murphy's thread!
By the way... tonight, go into a room with no windows. Turn off the light and any light-producing items. Stand up. Now, other than your feet, you will experience nothingness, now won't you? Lie down. Now, you'll experience near-nothingness without any energy output.
Also...although Hell is described as a "lake of fire" in the Bible...that may just be the literal sense. It's also described as a "bottomless pit" where basically it will be total nothingness where you can't feel anything (not even your feet this time). Your vision will be no different from your closed eyes. As for the temperature, in this other description... I forgot what it was-- but you can feel.
It's hard for the human to think about its own termination, yes; but you can get dang close. I still don't see how you can't simulate absolute nothingness.

*sigh* I hate it when I hear about the "scientific fact" of evolution. IT IS A THEORY. THEORY AND FACT ARE NOT THE SAME THING. THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION HAD NEVER BEEN PROVEN TO BE FACT.
A few hundred years ago, it was scientific fact that the world was flat. Before that, it was scientific fact that Earth was the center of the universe. Both of those were discredited. Evolution has NO solid proof to back it up. Get your "facts" straight.
I'm not even going to bother with the rest.

You included the word "Christianity" in your first sentence. Just because of that, 95% of the people here will give you -2 for it.
You get -1 because you don't seem like a complete moron. yay.
