There is a cold, cruel beauty to mindless violence, contained in a moment suspended above time itself. A greater rush than any drug, it bends will and breaks bodies in the ultimate pursuit of oneness.
They stuff us into pads and strap helmets to our heads; they dress us as prized war horses in glorious raiment, readying us for war. They parade us in front of the plebian mobs, all thoughts of right and wrong sterilized by the stadium lights. The needle is poised, the thumb is upon the plunger.
And without a word, there is contact. If actions speak louder than words, there is more quietude in a Turkish Bazaar than in the trenches. We move with the ball, we move as one. Not as brothers, but with a hive-mind, an unthinking and absolute devotion to those who are to come after us. The serum courses through our veins, rushing and pushing, silencing doubt and striking down weakness, altering us a little more with each second. All for the glory of the team.
The crowds watch and, unless they themselves have tasted the ambrosia, do not understand.
Sweating and panting in the afterglow, we ready ourselves for one more hit.
Regards,
YellowDragon

indoninja-
You're absolutely right; wrestling is my real sport. I can't write about wrestling, though-- I'm too deeply attached to it. I guess I could try, but there are so many different allusions you can make with football. It just makes for better writing.
Everyone else:
Thanks.

It was an enjoyable read, but I don't think team sports really measure up . It doesn't have half the thrill of stepping into a mat or ring, one on one, you get in a zone and until it is over you don't see the crowd, or hear the cheers, or care about "glorious raiment", it is you against him, who is stronger, and when it is over you suddenly feel the crowd blasting back into existance, but who cares because the roar in your head is much louder than any crowd knowing you were victorious, not your team, but you.
I was only going to give it a one, but now I am getting pumped up thinking about high school and college.

Fucking amazing. Though not the best line, my favourite line is "The crowds watch and, unless they themselves have tasted the ambrosia, do not understand. "
So true. I miss high school football.
