I used to know a couple who were pulling a very similar scheme here in town. In fact the wife worked with me. Her husband was a supposed tennis pro who gave private tennis lessons to all the rich doctor's wife women with nothing better to do with their time than take private tennis lessons from a supposed tennis pro. He claimed to be from South Africa. I don't know if he was or not, but he had the accent so maybe he was. He also claimed that the US government would only allow him to bring so much of this big family fortune into the country at a time.
One day, she just didn't show up for work. The next day, the phone started ringing off the hook with rich doctor's wife type women calling and calling looking for them. Turns out he had gotten all of them to give him money that would somehow allow him to bring all of his family money into the country. I have no idea how much money they skipped town with, but I do know that some of the women I talked to were very worked up about the fact that they had done this without their husbands knowing about it.
Why they told me that I don't know because there is exactly jack shit I could do about it, except giggle later about how fucking stupid the whole thing was. They were good too, they even timed it so that she got her last check before they left.
I had forgotten all about it until just now.
