I started listening to rap/hip-hop music went I was in high school. It was the *cool* thing to do back then. My town was a rich white Mecca, and anybody who lived in similar settings can tell you that that will force a power vacuum. One way to show how hard you were, and therefore fill the void, was to play your rap music as loud as possible when driving into the school parking lot. So by 9:00 in my town there was a plethora of Mercedes, beamers, tricked out civics, and other such lovelies blasting rap/hip-hop in a symphony of bass. Needless to say, I was not above my cohorts and I too had purchased some subs and proceeded to blast my rap/hip-hop as loud as them.

Over time I came to really like this genre of music. Some people are under false beliefs as to what rap/hip-hop music is all about and therefore never give it chance. (Like what I do with country, but country really does suck) Like any other style of music it's the artist who makes it good or bad. Gangsta or Meaningful. A lot of people complain that rap/hip-hop artists are not talented. Well Yes I will admit that playing an instrument is probably harder then rapping on a track, but I still think it takes talent to rap. A rocket scientist is more talented than a teacher, but a teacher is still talented.

Anyway I digress. The reason I wrote this post is because, even thought I love rap music, I listen to it everyday, always downloading the newest (and oldest) stuff I can find. There comes along a song that makes me feel embarrassed. More embarrassed then the dad whose kid got sent home playing with his pecker in glass. Im talking, see your mom masturbating with a gas-turbine powered monstrosity of a vibrator embarrassed. Maybe you heard this song. Heres the chorus.

My Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And they're like "It's better than yours"
Damn right, It's better than yours,
I can teach you, but I have to charge

WOW. Scary isn't it. The scary part is that this song is considered a hit. Its number 25 on the billboard singles chart. Sandwiched between Its my life by No doubt, and So far away by Staind.

All I have to say is im sorry. This isn't right. There should not be some fucking dumbass piece of shit song using a fucking milkshake as a goddamn sexual innuendo on the radio. A MILKSHAKE! If you could pick any static object as you sexual innuendo, would it be a fucking Milkshake?!?! No fucking way. Its wrong! Its Rush Limbaugh popping painkillers getting 20 million listeners telling his audience that the sky is blue and the grass is green not because of "environmentalist wackos" but because he's back. Its wrong like some black guy with a barely earned GED from the great university of the New York State Penal system getting a job over a white guy with a fucking doctors degree from Harvard because of his color. Then the black guy yells RACISM when the white guy gets a taxi before him. ARRRR!!! I hate this shit like I hate hot ass chicks who wear next to nothing, then tell you there not a whore. WOW, coulda fooled me bitch. Your goddamn VAGINA is hanging out the bottom of you 4 inch miniskirt! Do you not see that? Your dragging the bottom of your baby-oven on the floor! If I can see your fucking inner LABIA that makes you a whore, end of story case closed. Its like when your buddy says he will pick you up from the airport when you get back from that shitty ass business trip to the fucking boonies in WISCONSIN, but doesn't make it. His excuse?! Uh, I feel asleep! Thanks Asshole! Now I have some shitty as taxi driver who knows about four words in English my next three weeks paycheck to drive me home even thought I know were going to get lost because he doesn't understand the concept of the on-ramp! AHHHHH!!!!

It's Tuesday and shit is pissing me off. I apologize for the music.

I heard this song today and almost cried.

This was my first time. My Milkshake cherry has been popped. My ears are so very angry.

Anyway, it came on and I thought of this post, warning people to stay away from the Milkshake song. I just want to confirm that this is sound advice.

Lesbian porn rules.

And since you went along with the wedding idea, maybe I shouldn't be stalking you. Yep ladies... that's right. I'm a stalker with a fear of commitment. I cringe myself when I grab my victims by the throat and tell them "We should be together, FOREVER".

Consider yourself off the hook. But you're fun as hell to talk to on the phone.

Main Entry: mar·ket·ing
Function: noun
Date: 1561
1 a : the act or process of selling or purchasing in a market b : the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service
2 : an aggregate of functions involved in moving goods from producer to consumer

They are "playing the shit someone your age wants to hear" because they are pushing products. Whether those products are the stuff they are selling in their commercials... or the songs themselves (which leads to cd and concert ticket sales) it doesnt matter. It's ALL about the marketing.

As far as the weekend talent is concerned... Carolyn Stone left for a career move to Lansing. She's Middays and the MD at Lansing's Q106. OD has completely switched up and is now selling real estate.

It's funny that you bring up *the hot chick from TV*. She was my roommate and now she's in Lansing :( I'm currently looking for a new place.. I hope I find one soon!

Actually, I don't pay attention to the "marketing" aspect of the station. Yes, they play what someone in my demographic would want to listen to. I wouldn't call it marketing as much as I would call it "playing the shit someone my age wants to hear".

I'm upset that 2 of the best 3 personalities from that station have moved on, so im probably not going to listen as much as I used to on the weekends.

Are they gonna keep the same chick's voice for the commercials even though she doesn't work there anymore? I saw her on a T.V. commercial. She was lookin' DAMN good!

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and guess that you are a male between 18-34 years old?

The reason that you think the greatest station is WRIF is because they are marketing directly to you. If you were a woman between the ages of 34 and 54 you'd think we were the best thing since sliced bread.

They still use the letters WKRK because primarily because they syndicate Howard Stern in the morning. I'm not certain which came first - the call letters or the Howard syndicate...but for as long as they have him on I doubt they'll be changing.

What is your gripe on Greater Media there kid? The good news is that since they only own three stations in Detroit they can focus on what it takes to be a decent radio station... instead of asses like Clear Channel who own 7 in Detroit alone and spend most of their time promoting their sister stations in the market. All that does is canibalize their audience. If 5 people are listening to station X and you tell them to listen to station Y... you'll have 3 people at station X and 2 at station Y but still no new listeners. So whats the point?

KROQ...definately not new york.... definately... definately not new york. *best rainman impression I've got*

RB- the reason you're thinking KROQ is a New York station is probably because Howard Stern works at "K-Rock radio" in New York. Their call letters though are WXRK. "K-Rock" is a very common name for rock stations and I'm not sure the official roots but I know that KROQ is in Pasedena CA.

Hell even Detroit had a "K-Rock" at one time... WKRK. Now they are a talk format - but thats besides the point.

See, THESE are the things I'm ignorant about -the obvious things. I can go on and on about the history of Rome and ancient Greece, I can babble for hours about philosophy with at least a decent level of knowledge, I can clearly and effectively elucidate my opinions and observations on the nature of human existence -but damned if I can remember which color of jumper cable goes to which terminal. 40 bucks for a 6000 is almost what they go for new. Shell out another 50 bucks... and buy a pair when they go on sale. You can install everything yourself, it's not a rocket science. Car audio is something I actually know about, and I know unless you're getting some high class shit, it's best to do it yourself.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See the thing is, i dont want a pair. I have a small car (04 corolla s) and i think one 10 should be pretty good for what i need. It runs at like 250 watts RMS. So if i get a 2 channel amp and bridge it for like 200 watts, that should be pretty good. Plus i dont want to waste any extra space in my trunk. I would wire it myself if i had any clue about wiring anything.

I tried to wire these neon interior lights in it (yes yes, gay riceburner shit i know i know) and i ended up almost electrocuting myself. While fun, it hurt alittle.

My friend is actually mailing me a sub right now. He has an 10" MTX thunder 6000 in a box, for 40 bucks. Im like fuck it, why not. A 200 watt amp will only run me about 100. SO fuck it. Back massage for 140 bucks + installation. Who doesnt like that!?

Country Music = The fall of civilization.

Any genre of music that has a song talking about "She thinks my TRACTORs' Sexy" is from the devil.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE STUFF! My dad use to listen to Alan Jackson (my dad is from kentucky, its not his fault) when i was a kid. If you know anything about country, which I unforunetly do, you know Alan Jackson is a country country singer. Hes not a Garth Brooks, pop/country. Hes country as country can be.

Needless to say, i almost killed myself.

Good lawdy, PMJ! I have listened to soooo much rap. Every guy I date loves the stuff, not to mention I went to high schoool in Coral Springs, Florida, which is just north of Miami. I think I was overexposed to rap or something. Plus I can only catch about every third word and usually am incredulous that whatever they said is, in fact, authentic slang. I am a 60 year old trapped in a 21 year old's body, I swear to God.

And I was just about raised on Johnny Cash. Awesome.

Come to think of it, I heard an awful lot of Neil Diamond growing up too.

Kristen: Honestly, you should give Rap a shot. There are different types, and I'm sure you'd end up finding something you like.

For years I refused to listen to country on principal because I was sure I didn't like it (well except for 'The Gambler' anyway) until finally my roommate downloaded a bunch of Johnny Cash, and we put the playlist on Random while we were drinking. I found that I actually really liked his style of country even if I didn't like the rest of the stuff.

So ya, give Rap/Hip-hop a shot. Maybe start out with some light trip-hop like 'Massive Attack' or 'Tricky'. Maybe download a hip-hop classic like 'White Lines' (a fantabulous song). Just don't discredit rap before you've experimented around.

I understand the concept of doing it for the love of the music... but correct me if I'm wrong - isn't the point of rapping or being in a band or anything to actually make money? It is technically a job and thats how they pay their bills (and buy diamond encrusted playstations).

Why is it so *bad* to be commercial?

~LaNa :)
-------------

Lana, we're not saying it's bad for a rapper to make money, or be covered by the media. What we're implying by saying that a rapper is commercial is that he/she is a creation of the corporate music studios, and has no insight, or ability and only makes it into the spotlight due to his/her promotion.

Example: Tupac sold a lot of albulms and made a lot of money yet I wouldn't call him commercial even though he starred in some movies.

Nelly also sold a bunch of albulm and made a lot of money, but his rap is shit that is all written for him and puched onto the public and is popular to the people who know nothing about good rap.

I'm not sure if that clarifies anything, but it's getting near the end of the day and my brain isn't working as well anymore.

I saw MTV2 before the list and thought it was shit. I saw Lil Kim higher up then Krs-One and i knew it was shit.

Theres a difference between being commerical and want to make money.

Example.

Biggie was rich, but he wasnt commerical. He talked about real shit in real ways. He said in an interview, "On my first album i talked about robbing and shit and being poor cause i was. Now i aint poor no more so i cant rap about that shit no more." - Thats being real

Puffy is rich, always has been, but he become commerical when biggie died. I dont think i need more evidence to support this. If you didnt know this, your retarded. Or just dont like rap music.

txyankee,
Jay-Z "going out like a champ with the black album"? What? Jay-Z can eat my ass while big pimpin jigga style. When I heard about the Black album, I thought it was a joke in reference to This is Spinal Tap. When I found out I was wrong and that someone seriously made a blank, black packaged cd, I cried on the outside and died on the inside.

I'm tired of all that shizzle dizzle nizzle wizzle crap anyhow. That's it! From now on, I'm going straight old school and only saying things like "dope", "proper", and "Funky fresh" to describe things I like. If I make a joke, I'll quickly let you know I'm making a joke with a cutting "pysche" at the end of my statement. And to express sheer astonishment, I'll offer an "oh, snap!" Yeah, stricly old school rollin from now on, baby.

My favorite all time rap artist is Esham. He's more local than not, and probably has more fans in the Detroit area than Eminem. Eminem is garbage in comparison... and Esham is not afraid to say that. His first album would be #2 on this list... but I'm sure very VERY few of you have heard of him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is so true about Eminem in Detroit! When it comes to talent Esham is hands down more talented than Eminem.. he just isn't as *marketable* to the world as Eminem is.

The one thing I've noticed when I travel around anywhere outside of Detroit is that once someone finds out I live in the Detroit area - first they get scared and then they either ask if I know Eminem or if I know Kid Rock. If the conversation continues they usually ask about 8 Mile. Oddly enough...I work right off of 8 Mile Rd. For those of you who have never been here...8 Mile is an extremely LONG road. I had a kid in NYC once ask me if I worked for Eminem because of that. (it's fun to toy with the emotions of an idiot... so of course I told him yes).

I wonder if people from other notable cities get asked similar things - or if it's just because that's all people seem to know about Detroit now-a-days. I'm curious to find out...

There definitely is a difference between the pre-packaged bull and good actual rap. Hell, you can even hear it in the way a rapper presents his tune. I mean just compare the emotion in "Hit 'em up" or "Gimme da Loot" by two masters (Tupac and Biddie, duh) with a Nelly or Ja Rule piece of garbage. There IS not comparison.

Mac, Im actually not a huge fan. I really only have like two of his albums. I do think hes very talented, but thats it.

The reason i like that song so much is not because its really good lyrically or musically. I think it is, but its far from the best. Its really because it just brings back good memories of high school and college. One of those songs. Know what im saying?

Nice job on this post Really Bored. Turns out most of us Übersite users are hip hop fans at least somewhat.
I found myself out-growing most hip hop. Or is it just that there is nothing good coming out anymore? Probably that. I still love listening to most of my old stuff. And since we're all whores to the ever popular TOP 5 LIST, here is mine.

1) 2pac - All Eyes On Me
2) Xzibit - The Restless LP
3) Nate Dogg - G-Funk Classics
4) Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony - East 1999 Eternal
5) Nas - I Am
Honourable Mention:
Eminem - Slim Shady LP
DMX - It's Dark and Hell is Hot

P.S. Office Space rules. I love the part with Michael Boulton is in traffic with the loud music and then turns it down, stops singing, slouches below the dash as the black guy walks by. Too funny.

best overall lyricist - big pun
best overall group - outkast
best producer - dre/pharell

also nappy roots and my underground legend lil' flip from houston, been getting hot lately
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its 36 chambers no 16. And i dont get that simple comment. Please explain.

Best overall lyricist - big pun?!?!?! Are you fucking insane? Big Pun had one album that was ok, but best lyricist. You are waaaayyy off on this one. Try Nas, Rza, Immortal Technique, fucking Q-Tip is a better lyricist then Pun.

The Outkast pick is better but they are far from the best. Besides the aforementioned WU, groups like Mobb Deep, Tribe, NWA were much better.

Dre is money but pharell is a bitch. Timberland is better, IMHO.

I think ludacris is becoming too pop. Hes like the next Nelly.

------------------------------------------------------

I hope you dont like that song. I really dont. If your just fucking around, disregard the rest of this.

I think what PMJ, Mac, a few others and myself are trying to say throughtout this whole post is that rap music like Holday Inn is bullshit. Its this ritz, glitz, teeny-bobber, weak lyrics, stupid catchy beats that makes other artists from other genres (as well as regular people in general) hate rap/hip-hop music.

Ok, lets disect a good song like Nas is Like (which i mentioned earlier) and this chingy Holiday inn Song.

Holiday Inn:
Simple Looped beat
Chingy is an unknown, but supported by Snoop and Ludacris
Story talks about smoking blunts fucking whores in a hotel room
Video is bright, very bright

Nas is Like:
Amazing beat that even has some bird's chirping as a sample
Nas is a legend, but on his first album he did it all BY HIMSELF. No stars, just Nas.
Story is about everything from life and death to racism, to wealth and power. Too much to go over
Video is just him in his old neighboorhood in NY just rapping and hanging out

I hope this clears some things up.

This reminds me of that ugly duckling - meatshake album, which I'm surprised no-one mentioned. I thought meatshake had something to do with masturbation until I heard it. It's really about a fictional(?) fast food chain that serves meat through a straw.

I love music. I believe there are no good or bad genres of music, just good and bad examples of each genre.

So weird al yankovic plays a mean polka, a genre that would usually make my ears bleed. And this might blow your mind, but some of those early System of a Down songs are actually polka music played louder and faster.

Talk about soul Assassins got me thinking about B-real. Did anyone ever hear the stuff he did with "The Psycho Realm". They were basically a harder version of Cypress Hill, but had some crazy songs. I think that they only put out one albulm, but it's definitely worth a look for anyone who liked Cypress.

Or in my 'hardcore' thug days, I listened to Onyx. Sticky fingers may have the hardest voice I've ever heard
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I remember Psycho Realm. That was a great album. Even thought Cypress Hill only talked about smoking weed and whatnot they were still great. The instrumental on Illusions is classic.

Onyx was one of my favorites when i was younger. I remember telling someone that i wanted Slam as my wedding song. Yes i was fucked up even then.

I know this is gonna sound gay, but what is your favorite rap track? Mine by far is Nas is like by Nas. That song has great beat that for some reason always reminds me of summer. Here some lyrics..

Went from Seiko to Rolex, ownin acres
From the projects with no chips, to large cake dough
Dimes, givin fellatio, siete zeros
Bet my nine spit for the pesos
But what's it all worth, can't take it when you under this Earth
Rich men died and tried, but none of it worked
They just rob your grave, I'd rather be alive and paid

Forgot to mention Mobb Deep. Quiet storm is a classic track that everyone should have.

The Soul Assassins Cd was pretty kick ass. The "random guys" were Mobb Deep, Goodie Mob, La the Darkman, and Wyclef. At the time the most popular "artist" on the album was Dr. Dre in the cut "Puppet Masters" which sucked ball sack. The best track on the album is "Decisions Decisions" by Goodie Mob, whose earlier work is truly classic Dirty South Rap. If you haven't got it- go get Soul Food by Goodie Mob- it gives a true sense of the rap scene in the south.

Soul Assassins?! They are definately not british. The Soul Assassins (unless its more then on group) are a bunch of American Mc's that made an album like 5 years ago. It was B-Real from cypress hill (which i forgot to mention earlier as kickass), Rza and Gza from wu, and some other random guys.

As for the guy who asked about other types of music. I listen to alot of shit, but mainly its either Hip-hop/rap, Rock, or Trance/Techno. It all started in 97. There are four people to blame.

1. Whoever shot Pac - This fuckin guy took the greatest MC of all time away at his prime. So much shit... shit with a purpose could have come out from him over the past 7 years. Damn... 7 years... I didn't realize how long its been. Now, to get all the agression that was Pac, you have to listen to some white fucker who STILL can't get respect from half his "hometown", and his teeny bopper buddy 50 cent. Fuck 50 cent... and the whore (feminem) he rode in on.

2. Puffy - This fucker should have quit music when Biggie died. If you were a trainer for an olympic caliber sprinter, and he died, would you in turn try to run just because he tried to get you to run? Puffy can't run with the real... and he brought a shitstorm of press into rap. Opened up the flood gates for fuckers to come in talking about the bling bling.

3. Missy Elliot - Combined with Timbaland (who is wasting his producing talent)... they can make some outrageous beats, but the bitch needs to shut up. She can't rap... dance... and makes the female monkeys at the zoo look fucking beautiful.

4. Whoever shot Biggie - As big a 2Pac fan as I was, I still didn't want to see that. He was maybe the best in the biz after Pac's death. The shittiest thing about this one tho... is that because of this... Puffy got all the attention he ever wanted. All he had to do to get a good review, is talk about Biggie. This snowballs into shit music being "respected" when it should have been given the barrage of -2's from critics.

It pisses me off that Wu has gone so solo and theres alot of infighting, but i still think they are amazing. Every single member of wu (except U-God, he fucking sucks ass) could be in the top 20 MCs of all time. The solo albums are for the most part pretty good.

That was a nice little rant at the end, but your article has got it all wrong. Asswipes like Nelly and Chingy aren't rappers. They're pre-packaged media-friendly products, specifically designed and engineered for mass appeal among white teenage (mostly female) audiences. The sad thing is that despite despite their over exposure, they're not saying anything or conveying any messages, rather just using catchy little trade mark phrases like "bling bling" and "fo shizzle" which just add to the dumbification of america. Not to mention that they're lyrical content, although widely accepted by the main stream, not only is unclever (usually just recycled nursery ryhmes) but lacks substance as well- unless of course you enjoy the degredation of black people through stereo types of womanizing, drug dealing, black on black crime, and absentee parenting. But hey, that's just keepin it real, right? Real for the white record company executives who make a living by perpeptuating stereo types. So please go out and get the new G-Unit CD (in stores today) and then let me know how much listening to it gave you respect for black culture and black people. By the way, fuck 50 Cent.

PMJ : I would really recommend NAS as starting point, start with Illmatic and work your way forward.

As for British hip hop I hate it. It just doesn't sound right!

RB: Yes, The Roots are very talented non-gangsta hip-hop. I really like their (and acutally a lot) layed back chill hip-hop style. If you're ever looking for a great lyricist check out KRS-One. You might remember him from back in the day, and his stuff is fantastic IMO. He raps a lot about educating yourself as opposed to being a 'thug' and does so with some pretty darn intelligent ryhmes. He's actually a philosophy teacher at Princeton (if I'm not mistaken)/

Apoolo and RB: OK, well I'll take KRS-One's dick out of my mouth, but do you guys have any recommendations as to some good rap/hip-hop. Also, Apollo, seeing as you're a brit, do you know any Brit-hop/trip-hop that use North Americans (and especially Canadians) might not know about?

Kinda cathartic.

I think theres actually alot of us PMJ. I find myself relating to that guy in Office Space when i drive to work all dressed up blasting that new Biggie,Tupac song. Its weird. We had like one black in my elemetary school, but he was like a rich, im white just really tan, black kids. Then we had another in my high school, but he only last about a week. Its weird. Because my all the kids in my school were like fuck niggers. I hate them. Then in the next breath it was, yo did you hear that new Wu-tang joint? Its the shit.

Weird.

If anybody wants to know what a talented rap group is, check out the roots. They play all their own instruments and write all their own shit. Pretty good songs IMHO.

+2 Because it was hard getting that red circle perfectly centered. And i had to do it acouple times because the line was too thin.

There is some kick ass rap/hip-hop out there to go along with all the (c)rap that's out there as well. I feel your pain as to the upper middle class white boy who likes rap syndrome that you discuss. Here I am, a banker, that grew up in the suburbs of Montreal (I think I saw my first live black person at the tender age of 12) but I really enjoy singing along to Tupac's "Hit 'em up" (one of the most hardcore songs ever). It's really kind of strange, but it's good music.

Anyway, there is definitely a ton of shit rap/hip-hop out there (see Nelly, 50 cent, etc.) but to people who discount rap as a whole without giving it a shot, I say "Wake the fuck up because homey be packin' a biscuit and's 'bout to bust a cap in yo ass!"

Here here! Or is it 'hear'? Who cares. Country music does suck. I don't like rap, either, except for a random song every couple of years.

ah hahahaha i LOVE that tune!

no really i do!

Kelis - Milkshake

it helps that kelis is just awesome in and of herself.

i thought milkshake was that thing that the (i'm about to sound rasist) black girls do when they shake their butts really really fast to the music.

maybe i'm wrong.
maybe i'm a white 6'1 male who cant dance.
