MIRAMAR, Fla., Dec. 4 — As far as some Florida parents are concerned, first-grade teacher Geneta Codner is a true grinch after she told her class that Santa Claus was "make-believe."

http://www.msnbc.com/news/1001146.asp?0cv=CB20

Dear Geneta Codner,

Or should I say

Dear Vile Heartless Bitch,

How dare you. Children are innocence. A 6 year doesn't need to understand the physics of a flying reindeer, or how a fat man fits down a chimney. It has only one explanation, Magic. For the rest of their lives these children will remember the person that robbed them of their innocence regarding the magical mystery of Santa Claus. Do you not remember the joy of not caring HOW the presents got there, only that they were there and the exuberant joy taken in shredding the colorful papers and ribbons to get to your gift for being good.

Are you that much of a holiday hater you have to spoil it for OTHER peoples children. Childhood is a time of mystery and wonder, who appointed you the stripper of innocence, defiler of dreams, foiler of fables, assassin of imagination.

Were you abused as a child? Did Santa scare you one too many times at the mall.

We all have our gripes with the over commercialization of Christmas, but did destroying it for this group of children really make you feel any better. This was not a group of jaded teenagers you were having a discussion with, these were first graders.

What is your next goal for damaging children having a puppet party with Wiggles the Clown and Mr. Peepers the Pocket pony?

Innocence is precious and is due to be lost eventually, but let it happens on its own, don't hasten children to adulthood, they will get there just fine on their own. You need to quit teaching now and get into a line of work where you can suck the souls from people all day long...

I hear the DMV is hiring.

Fuck Santa yielded the following result on your url to Santa's track record for whoever:

"What a great person and friend! Definitely a "Nice!" Wonderful job of always considering others. Hands out compliments regularly. Knows the great importance of "please" and "thank you." A good role model. The main suggestions for improvement: eat more veggies and really wash those hands!"

haahahahahaa... Fuck Santa.

Santa is God. He is used as a mythical figure who will punish naughty children, thereby preventing them from receiving the only thing they really care about at that age: presents. Santa is punishing the naughty.

God is Santa. He is used as a mythical figure who will punish sinning adults, thereby preventing them from receiving the thing they care about most at that age: eternal salvation. God is punishing the sinners.

That being said, it's none of my business what parents want to teach their own children. But for a stupid whore to come along and undermine the ideas that those parents have tuaght, that is dirty and unneccessary. It's not her business.

It is ABOLUTELY NO DIFFERENT than someone telling a kid that God/Jesus isn't real.

The sad part is that most adults don't grow out of believing in God. We can learn a lot from kids.

Party03: "You know Santa's watching you."
My parents have never uttered these words, nor have they ever used Santa as leverage. I think I turned out alright. Also, let's take what Party03 has said, and replace "Santa" with "God":

"Look at what the legend of God does for fuck's sake though...kids (which, let's be honest can be the shittiest of little shits) are told that if they behave, they will get lot's of presents from God...I know when I was a child, if I started to misbehave, nothing would shut me up, and get me in line like my mom saying "You know God's watching you." "

If you're wondering why this is relevent, check out this post: http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/message_get.cgi?message=1069806875599010716

While I conceed that the teacher may have stepped over her bounds, if you actually read the article, it appears she was in a logical corner - either admit the truth about Santa, or lie. In that position, I don't believe I could lie.

Here's an interesting question: Does NetNanny keep children from accessing sites that tell the truth about Santa? Should it?

isnt it possible to teach the spirit of giving or whatever without inventing some stupid old man? from what ive seen kids dont even learn anything from the santa figure. theyre mostly greedy little kids. "whats santa gonna get me this year?" they dont learn about the 'giving' spirit until later (like when they make their own money)

Fuck santa.
What should a parent do?
Feed their kid bullshit mythology after bullshit mythology until you think they're old enough for the truth, then tear down their whole belief system one day,in the hope that other kids in the playground haven't already done it and also in the hope that you won't really really upset them and make them distrust you?
Or
Tell them the truth.

I really don't see why we should fuck with childrens heads, that can't be healthy.

I worked out when I was 4 that santa didn't exist.
Guess what - I still loved christmas, still do.
Just meant I didn't expect all these shit hot presents that my parents couldn't afford because I knew it was my parents paying and not some make believe character.

Well done teach.

Look at what the legend of Santa does for fuck's sake though...kids (which, let's be honest can be the shittiest of little shits) are told that if they behave, they will get lot's of presents from Santa. No parent would actually be heartless enough to deny their little jewel of these gifts, but while the kids are still impressionable enough to believe it, you're gauranteed at least two weeks, if not a month of good behavior from the little tykes. I know when I was a child, if I started to misbehave, nothing would shut me up, and get me in line like my mom saying "You know Santa's watching you."

Also, like someone said before me, he teaches the giving spirit. While he may be fiction, Santa teaches wonderful qualities. Granted there is a time that children need to learn that there is no Santa, tooth fairy, or easter bunny. However, this teacher over stepped her bounds and took that desicion out of the parent's hands. Every child is different, and needs to learn these things at their own pace.

B) There are miracles in the universe. Look at life: Deity or not, The very fact you are reading this is a miracle in itself, isn't it? We have enough trouble with whether or not God(ess) exists, let alone creating things we know to be false.

It is more important to teach a child to wonder, than to teach "white lies".

Isn't the whole idea of Santa a way for parents to mock children and their ignorance anyway?

"Oh, look at Johnny, he believes Santa is bringing him all these presents. He's so naive, how cute."

No shit he believes it, because YOU told him. You lied to him to satisfy your own sense of sick nostalgic humor.

Seriously, kids love Christmas enough with all the presents, there's no need to lie to them about a flying fat man.

Will I tell my kids the truth? Hell no. I was lied to when I was a kid, so I'll have some fun at their expense, and joyfully watch the trauma unfold when they discover the truth on their own. Ha ha kid, you fool. That'll teach you to believe what I tell you.

heh you know, whenever I get into a religious discussion where someone says they are 'sure' there is a God it's amusing to bring up Santa.

With Santa, the whole world essentially comes together to lie to children as a group and as individuals. Everyone in a position of authority says to children that, yes Virginia, there is a Santa. Hmm. Actually it makes more sense for a child to believe in Santa than in God... after all, there's no presents under the tree from 'God'... but there is certainly evidence of Santa.

anyway... what was my point again?

Fun facts to know and tell: I never believed in Santa. I was a logical child. My parents told me he was real, and I went along with it because, in my logical mind, it made sense that if I let them think I believed in Santa, they would buy me more presents. Same with the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, and Cupid. I went along with these ideas because I figured that if I didn't, the presents and candy would stop coming.

I still think that the stories are good for kids, but you are correct, Razor. It does seem wrong for parents to lie to their children, however, which is the greater evil? A white lie that makes the kids happy, or a childhood devoid of joyful imaganings and belief in magic? I think most kids need to beleive in magic, miracles, and the like, to protect their innocence from the harsh realities of adult life. That's what being a kid is FOR.

Denis_Leary says: "Fuck you liberals that think it's a lie and children shouldn't be lied to. It's a JOY." Ignorance is bliss, eh Denis?

beer-turtle said something interesting: "I believe in Santa as much as I believe in God....I question it, but if I receive a benefit from it, it can't hurt." In the end, aren't God and Santa Claus the same thing? We are told they exist, and will do WONDERFUL things for us, so long as we are good. They can watch us all the time...

beer-turtle, have you heard of Pascal's Razor? Consider this thought: If you believe in God, and there is a God, you're set. If you beleive in God, and there is no God, nothing happens. If you don't believe in God, and there is no God, again, nothing happens. BUT, if you don't believe in God, and it turns out there is a God...

That doesn't really have much to do with this, just thought you'd find it interesting.

ANYWAY, here's my two cents: My parents weren't going to do the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or all that other crap, but unfortunately one of their friends told me about them, and pretty much forced my parents into the whole deal. How fair was that to them? I wasn't given the chance to live a santa-free existance, no one is. Whenever my little cousins mention Santa Claus, I don't say anything. I'm not a liar. Regardless of how pleasant a lie all of you are going to paint it, it is still a lie.

By the way, I figured out pretty quickly that none of these things existed. I still got the gifts and the chocolate, except I knew who to thank for it.

Disclaimer: Jew here.

I hear you Ashlee, but I don't fully agree. Finding out your parents lied to you can do as much if not more damage than Santa as a positive role model.

Example: My SIXTEEN YEAR OLD cousin still believes in Santa. I asked him why, he told me because his father said Santa existed, and he wouldn't lie to him. He's going to be applying to colleges soon. He loves his father more than anything in the world. It's gonna be a pretty painful letdown.

Growing up, my parents told me Santa wasn't real the first time I ever asked about it. I also knew that the tooth fairy wasn't real, but that didn't stop my dad from sticking letters under my pillow "Dear Jeremy, thanks for the tooth. I'm going to put it on a necklace and sell it at a craft fair, Here's your share of the profits." I'd chuckle and thank him for the money.

I used to make fun of other kids in elementary school who believed in Santa. And I was a kid who was 90% imagination... I just distinguished between imagination and reality.

For all the people who say it's stupid to tell children that Santa is real; you're ignoarant. Not only does the story, as others said, bring children joy during the holiday season, but it actually helps them to be better people. Santa Claus is, despite being a fictional character, a role model for kids. The entire premise of the tale is that he's a kind old man who gives to others for no other reason than to bring them joy. It teaches children, who are typically only capeable of concrete thinking, that kindness to others brings more happiness to one than selfishness in a way that no form of "logical" thought could explain to them. When I have kids, I'd rather them believe in someone that gives purely for the pleasure of making others happy than model themselves after the selfish, whiny popular culture icons that dominate the role model position in most children's eyes.

it is easy to tell the people who had a happy childhood from those that hated theirs.

My own was mediocre at best, but you can bet your bottom dollar I will NEVER destroy the joy of a child receiving a gift, even if it is from a questionable source such as Santa.

You anti-santa folk just don't get that it is the SPIRIT of giving. My guess is that the haters are teens who recently recanted their belief in Santa as to be cool like thier friends who also don't believe.

I believe in Santa as much as I believe in God.

I question it, but if I receive a benefit from it, it can't hurt.

Here's a question...why don't you believe.

How do you know your parents are part of a larger conspiracy that you don't get let in on until you have children of your own?

honestly, i think telling kids santa clause is real is fucked up. Sure, tell them the story of santa clause, much in the same way of the baby jesus. Let us not forget it is a STORY. Why would anyone want to lie to their kids in the first place? To give them something to believe in? Much in the same way religion comforts adults, santa clause, the easter bunny, pokemon, etc. comforts children. This post sucks, and because you ripped apart the teachers ideals, so do you.

In your defense however, i do believe it is the parents, not the teachers place to tell their kids this.
