The purpose of advertising is not just to get you to go out and buy something.

The purpose of advertising is to make you aware of a product or service and to get you think a certain way about it. That is known as "the brand". For example, what's the difference between McDonalds and Burger King? Why do you think that that is the difference? When you're driving down a street looking for a burger from a fast food place, if you see a McDonalds on one side of the street and a Burger King on the other, which one do you go to? Why? Do you even know why?

It's just plain old brainwashing except it has a nicer sounding name.

I just read the headline and subhead and that's pretty far fetched. I can't think of too many times a commercial has convinced me to buy something. When commercials start doing that, then it's time to stop watching TV. I don't want anything brain washing me.
Or did I miss the point by not reading it?

This strategy of manipulating memory is more powerful than this. Many, many people can "remember" being in their crib when they are 1 or 2, or other things like that. But you have no memories before age three, (I won't explain, just trust me). What happens is that by using the power of suggestion your mind will remember things differently. I couldn't read the whole article, I'm sure it's all in there, but basically your opinion of something can be changed. It varies according to the person and the event, but it happens. A lot.

Marge: Homer, is this the way you pictured married life?

Homer: Yup, pretty much. Except we drove around in a van solving
mysteries.
