Jones and I fell asleep trying to figure out a way out. And we spent most of the next day doing the same. We were unsuccessful. But late that second day, the door was opened and a frightened Petrovich was standing there.
"I give up," he said. I had never seen any man as terrified as Petrovich was now. I had certainly never seen a Mafioso so frightened. To see him this way sent chills up and down my spine. "I sent some men to your office. Hiding place, very funny. They didn't return. I sent four more men out there. They didn't return. I went out there myself with Dmitri and Yuri. She said she didn't want to hurt them. She said to leave her alone. She said she didn't want to hurt anyone, but she would if they tried to take her. She killed Dmitri and Yuri like they were flies. I left. I'm letting you go. I don't give a damn about the girl. You can have her. Here." He tossed the P.O.M. to Jones. I don't care about her or the money I loaned you. Get out of here."
I was tempted to stay and get my revenge on Petrovich for what he did to Delilah. But LegsAndreawas waiting for me. I looked at Jones and I could see he was concerned, too.
Jones and I ran out to my carit was still there, a minor miracleand headed back to my office.
I was nervous and anxious, but Jones looked awful. He was running a hand through his greasy hair and his eyes were all over the place. I had spent a day and half in a cell with him and he didn't seem anywhere near this agitated.
"Jones, what aren't you telling me?" I asked.
He started when I spoke. "It's her power supply," he answered.
"What about it?"
"Well, you said her face was melting, right? That's a drain on her backup power supply. And then she's had to take on eight men. That's an even bigger drain. I've programmed her with a morality function, too. She can only hurt humans if they pose a threat to her. And even then she can only do what it takes to fend them off. Either she has to keep fighting these men off or she is overriding her programming to inflict more harm. Either way, it's even more of a burden on her power supply."
"What are you telling me?" I asked, although I thought I knew the answer.
"Just hurry."
The drive to my place would normally take about fifteen minutes. We made it in less than five.
When we walked into my waiting room, we saw five bodies on the floor. Their necks were bent at impossible angles. I didn't have to take a pulse to know they were dead. But Andrea was not there.
We walked into my office and found the other three men littered across the floor. They were also dead and their necks were misshapen.
"Where is she?" I asked.
"I don't know," replied Jones.
"We have to find her. She can't die on us."
"I know."
"Come on, Jones. Where would she go?"
"I . . . I don't know. Maybe my place?"
"Good thinking. Let's find out!" We headed out the door and hoofed it back to Jones's place.
The door was open. I hadn't left it open before. We walked in and Andrea was there. She was walking into a corner over and over again. We approached her and I touched her shoulder. She started, but thankfully didn't reach out and break my neck.
Her face was more distorted than ever. It was clear that her face was melting. Why hadn't I seen it before? But her eyes were still perfect and gorgeous. She smiled.
"Frank. I missed you."
"I missed you, too, Andrea. Good news, we found your P.O.M.."
"Thanks, Frank. I knew you would. But it's too late," her voice was sad. Heartbreakingly sad.
"No, it's okay. Look, Edward will fix you up now. Get you right as rain"
"It won't matter. My circuits are too corroded. The rain . . . Thank you for trying, Frank. I love you for trying."
I had known this girlshe was a girl to me, not a robotfor just a couple of days, but her "I love you" meant more to me than any other time I had heard it. Even if it was one of those I love yous that doesn't really mean that much.
"It'll be okay. Edward will hook up your P.O.M. and he'll fix your circuitry, too. It will be fine."
"No Frank. I'm dying."
"No, you can't." I felt tears stream down my face. "You can't die. I haven't felt anything in years and now . . . now I love you."
Her smile broadened. "I love you, too, Frank."
She kissed me and I felt the life leave her body. She was gone.
"Edward, get that P.O.M. in her! It's not too late!" I shouted.
Edward was looking at the ground. "It's already in her. She's not drawing its energy. She's gone."
"God damn it! Isn't there something you can do?" I demanded.
Edward's eyes remained planted on the floor. "No."
I held Andrea and wept. I must have wept for several minutes there before I closed my heart off once more.

I know I didn't lengthen it too much, but unofortunately, I had gotten to a point where there wasn't much to flesh out. Had I done it earlier, I could have done a lot more. So shame on me. Oh well. Thanks for reading.
