Well well WELL so it would appear that the rumors that have been flying around "the south" all my life have turned out to be true. Strom Thurmond really did have at least one illegitimate mixed-race (read BLACK) child. Hmmm, interesting. Here we have one of the south's most prominent segregationists fighting to keep his own children from achieving equality. Touching isn't it?
I have to admit that I am a bit curious about how this sort of thing could happen. Well, not specifically, I KNOW how that happens. I'm just curious about how it played out after the fact. Unfortunately, there is a time honored tradition 'round these parts for wealthy, white, landowners from prominent families to father children with young, black, women in their uh "employment" let's say. For reasons that I have never understood, these men do not seem to feel any responsibility towards these children and according to slave records, it was not uncommon for these children to be sold when the lady of the house noticed the resemblance.
I thought we were past that now.
Maybe we are, things to consider:
Strom was born in 1902, yes that would have been just 37 years after the end of the Civil War.
Strom was born before the invention of the airplane, production of the Model T, WWI, radio, Great Depression, WWII, television, etc - get the idea.
This child, I have heard rumors that there were at least 3, was born in 1925. Strom was 22, the mother was a 16 year old maid who worked in the Thurmond house. I realize that it was a different time and all, but wow what a gentleman.
Essie Mae Washington-Williams was 31 when her father, Strom Thurmond wrote the "Southern Manifesto" protesting the 1954 Supreme Court ruling against school desegregation.
She was 32 years old when her father set a senate record with a 24 hour and 18 minute long filibuster against a civil rights bill.
She was 40 when Strom switched to the Republican party in protest over President Johnson signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
She was 44 when Strom married the 22-year-old former Miss South Carolina.
To his credit, I have heard that his views on race softened in his later years. I can't seem to turn up any legislation that he worked on to prove this, but his daughter and constituency loved him. At the very least, he did support his child financially and she was a frequent guest of his on Capitol Hill. He could have ducked and run, but then he also could have done more for race relations.
I realize that it is unfair to judge a historical figure by modern standards, but to me it seems like the ultimate hypocrisy. He was not part of the solution by any means, quite the contrary, he was a large part of the problem.
I feel sorry for Essie Mae Washington-Williams. It had to be hard to know that your father may have loved you, but hated who you were. I don't suppose it's that much different for women who are raised by misogynistic men, but they usually end up in therapy don't they?
I also feel sorry for Essie Mae Washington-Williams because, bless her little heart, the poor dear actually looks like him.

My dad is not a big fan of women having views...
But he didnt seem to be able to raise any of us (five in total) to be little women at home.

Oh and a side point. Somewhere in this steaming pile of crap someone, Mick probably, said that if the schools were divided strictly along aptitude lines then there would be white schools and black schools. I go to open houses and various schools functions for the kids from karate quite a bit - 'tis the season. I thought about it and the schools pretty much mirror the city demographic. If anything, there seem to be more Asian kids in the science and math school - sorry Phinch, I'm just sayin'. I would say that this is only antidotal evidence at best, but the courts here ruled that they could end busing since the school were fully integrated.
Socioeconomic status is the largest determining factor in how well a child will do in school. It stands to reason, kids from homes in a higher socioeconomic class probably have a higher emphasis on education in the home. Also, according to what I heard on NPR this morning, white parents are less likely to trust the school than black parents and as such are more inclined to work with their kids at home more.

I thought someone else might bring it up Judoka. I'm very near the SC border here and it's amazing how much everyone knew about it. When he died there was a lot of water cooler chitchat about it. I have heard through the same rumor mills that he did a lot of behind the scenes kind of one on one for people that no one knew about. I'd like to believe that and think he was coming around in the end. I heard that his other kids were offering to include her and her family in the estate. If they do, that would kind of indicate that at least the younger generation is a little more open minded.

Blacks are better educated in this country than in anywhere else in the world and they are still dead last in all standardized testing. Blacks are the poorest people on the planet and the least educated, they are also the most violent (even more so than Arabs). Africa is a shithole war-torn continent where the people are starving to death or murdering each other in meaningless territorial/tribal wars. There is still slavery to this very day in Africa and the slavemasters are blacks. The original black slaves were sold into slavery by other blacks (who sold them to Europeans). More than half of all male blacks will spend time in jail. There are more blacks in jail than in college. Black women have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy. And finally, a lot of Black guys have big dongs.

I did not know that about the SC test scores. I heard a similar argument about SAT scores. I believe the state was New Hampshire (I could be wrong). The argument was that this state was spending the least amount of money on education and had one of the highest average SAT scores. The argument got blown out of the water when it was revealed that the reason their SAT scores were higher is because they did not require kids attending in state schools to take it whereas most states do. In fact, in my high school, kids were encouraged to take the SAT in the even that they decide later to go to college so you are in effect comparing apples to oranges.
Mick is off on a wild tangent now in a desperate attempt to prove me wrong somehow. The issue of race and education is complex and obviously it is off the charts insane to peg it to skin tone and completely ignore that litany of issues that PAS listed. Also, even if you just pretend for a minute that separate but equal is not total bullshit, I don't feel like Strom had the best interests of the black community in mind when he was continuously fighting to keep them from getting civil rights.
I don't know how you could feel that way about your own child, but then again there are sexist men out there who unfortunately have daughters and also sexist women who have sons. Further examples of why just any idiot who can make a baby shouldn't necessarily do so.

What state do you live in? Here in South Carolina, English as a Second Language (ESL) has a totally seperate curriculum, which is good, because they go at a slower pace to help them learn English, however they're given the exact same standardized tests with no accomodations made for their lack of english speaking/writting abilities. They typically have the lowest test scores. But the absolute lowest are from self contained classes (mentally handicapped and learning disabled students) beacuase once again, they learn at a lower level (the average 8th grade self contained student operates at a 2nd grade level) but they are tested at the same level as everyone else. South Carolina is one of the few states that includes ESL and Self Contained scores in its state overall average, hence we have the lowest overall scores in the nation. Which is bullshit because the other states don't factor in the ESL and Self Contained.
My point here is that just by looking at standardized test scores you would think that South Carolina schools were poorly educating their students. This isn't true. The truth is that the standardized tests are bullshit. And I agree with you that what's important is that each individual group learns at the appropriate pace and is tested at the appropriate level. But either way, that has nothing to do with whether or not their black. You're just an asshole for that. Using SC as an example, if you were to research data that would "prove" blacks perform poorly on these standardized tests it still wouldn't prove shit, because all you would see is the numbers, plain and simple. You wouldn't see how the majority of the black student population is highly concentrated in only a few schools, those of which are poorly funded, and as loki keeps saying they are substandard. The reason why they are substandard is because school districts pander to the white majority. Anytime anyone brings up racial equality with in the school system the white majority typically rolls their eyes and mumbles "here we go again with this NAACP shit" and then they give just enough to get the heat off their backs. But it's never anything near what the white districts are getting. This is just how it is. I see your point that white and black students may preform differently on tests and so forth, but it's a result of social and political restraints, not genetics.

First off Strom Thurmond was a hypocrite for the mere fact that he thought blacks were less than 'human', but was willing to have sex with them. Maybe this was the bestiallity that his cohort in the senate, Rick Santorum was talking about.
As a professional educator I feel compelled to add my two cents. MickGinny you are a fool if you think that race is even a small part of intelligence or academic achievement. Sex segregated schools only tend to work well because they are private schools - I'm sure mixed sex private schools have exactly the same results.
The same thing goes for mixed race schools. I think that what race you are makes no difference to intelligence. As for grades loads of factors such as upbringing, the importance your parents place on education, culture, wealth, aspirations, motivation, class size, peer pressure, socio-economic status and so many more make a difference.

2nd time- I never suggested sub standard schools just different curriculum.
Standardized test administered in every grade that determines what curriculum would be most appropriate and more important most challenging.
Different schools is the only way something like this would work.
Smart schools and dummy schools.... for lack of PC friendly names.

This is probably one of the few points that I will agree on with Loki. Education is paramount for any and every class, race and group of people. You can't under-fund, undermine, and generally marginalise them, their acheivements, and their schools, and then say that X group is not as smart as Y group.

It's an odd thing that a white person can act like an asshole and no one says "white people are assholes" but a minority is somehow required to represent an entire race.
Quartermain - I would be more forgiving of this had he not dedicated his political life to segregation and keeping down the civil rights movement. It makes me think that regardless of how he treated her, he never viewed his daughter as his equal. It harkens back to an age that most of us would like to think we've evolved beyond.

I don't think that naming specific black academic achievements is really helping your arguement. It's hurting it more than anything else. By name dropping, you've managed to belittle the efforts of all hard working blacks by admitting that there are so few, you're forced to name one to validate your opinion. I know you're not trying to do that at all, but if I were your friend, Koffi Annin, I would be offended that used my name in an arguement to prove that "black people are capable of intelligent thought" where as you should have just MickGinny to fuck off. The people on his show have the lowest levels of human intelligence imaginable.
To think Blacks are inherently less intelligent than Whites simply means you havent be walking around the right neighboorhoods. Come down to Florida, we can go visit some Central Florida counties. Ill show you some interesting specimans.

I hesitate to get into a pissing contest over this black person or that black person who has done what although the name Koffi Annin immediately springs to mind on the growing list of black people who are smarter than Mickginny. Not to single mick out here, Koffi Annin is smarter than most people of any race, just an example.
So it's ok to have a child by a black women (if 16 can be considered a 'woman') but not ok for that child to sit next to the children you had by a white woman in a classroom? Since Mick is so up on the news, I'm sure he knows without my telling him this that she is an educator herself. OH look another person with black ancestry who is smarter than mick.

I'm not going to add anything to the topic. I just wanted to share the coincidence that the topic of the public school system with the different socio-economic classes and grades of students was discussed yesterday with some company at my house. I'm not adding anything because it didn't deal much with the races, more of Florida's FCAT. (and how the schools with higher grades get funded more by the government) Two of the four visitors happened to be a successful black couple from New York...both of whom are lawyers.
Yes, Mickginny...I'm aware of you have said in previous messages... Something along the lines "Don't tell me you know a black person in his 3rd year of law school in Harvard. Somewhere along the line, he was given the genes for it... etc" I just wanted to share the coincidence.

I agree with Apollo. I refuse to believe that someone is ignorant enough to actually think that blacks are not as smart as whites. You're just trying to pick a fight.
Either that or you really are that much of an insecure simpleton. I have generally found that the people who are the most racists know that they can't compete on a level playing field so they impose these barriers. If people do not receive a proper education then they just fall into a self-fulfilling prophecy. You really seem bothered by your own lack of education, am I sensing some insecurities here? Do you feel the need to find another group to look down on for arbitrary reasons solely to make yourself feel better about your own inadequacies?

So you define the intelligence of an entire race of people, actually several races of people if you want to get technical about it solely on your careful observations in school. You are a simpleton if you think that race has anything to do with intelligence. You don't bother to take into account a single external factor - culture, economics, expectations, racists pricks like you making assumptions. You have single handedly decided that "they" are unworthy of an education.
I'm sure those kids would be happy to know that they were representatives for the entire population of black people. They certainly provide you with much more ammo than say my friend who is in Harvard law school right now, the guy in my CPA study group who also passed on the first sitting, his dad the doctor or his mom the college professor, the man I call "uncle Mack" who is a district court judge.
Oh but you saw some kids struggling in school so all black people everywhere are idiots unworthy of an education.

Ok, let's just assume for a moment that you are correct and examine the issue.
If black people are not as intelligent as white people then are we helping or hurting that situation by not providing them with the best education possible? Is their tax money somehow not worth as much as yours? Does their vote count any less than the one that you are probably not casting? Are they more or less likely to engage in criminal behavior if they are not educated and therefore not getting good jobs?
How many minorities over the past 227+ years have been in the armed services fighting for this country? I suppose that does not entitle them to the same rights and privileges that you have.
Women generally go better in school than men. I guess men are just not as smart so we should stop educating them. They are bigger and stronger anyway so what we should do is only educate women and push men into jobs that are better suited to heavy lifting. Women can become doctors, lawyers, teachers, and politicians and men can work in factories and construction jobs. It's a brave new world brought to you by mickginny.
