I have two years untill I have to leave the house and do something, and yesterday it dawned upon me that I'm not too good at anything. I am by no means an athlete, or a braniac. My math grades have slipped since I've arrived here, french will surely also follow. I'm sure I could go to college if I simply buckled down, but I seriously hate paper work.

My family has had a long history with the military, sometimes voluntarily but usually drafted. I've been considering joining when I'm 18, or take an ROTC course at an easy college. I don't support the war in Iraq one bit, thats the funny part. I really dislike Bush too. On top of it, everyone tells me not to join, including some people who are serving.

My Sister said I should go to college and become an intern for a politician, maybe adventually I could run for a high up position, but I hate politicians, and politics. I hate it so much I can't stop reading it, damned cycle of hatred.

So, question one: Military Uberers, whats the best branch to join and why? How long have you served, and just give a brief description of your daily goings, I'm really curious what life is like for you guys.

Question two: Does anyone have know of any un boring computer jobs, I could line up some more computer classes this semister if any do exist, but my dealings with computers so far have only led me to a path of boredom.

Question three: Teachers, Counselors, and Principals all make it sound like doing mediocre in High School is the end of the world, and if you don't go to college you will be doomed to flip burgers for eternity, is it true? Please elaborate.

Question four: For those of you who I've gotten to know and vice versa, can you think of a job that would be fitting for me?

Thanks for your time,
Darth

OK...

Person number one: Good Degree from good university, good Masters Degree from good university. Unemployed: 1 year.

Person Number Two: Crap A Level Results, dropped at least one of them. Never did well at school. Current status: Regional Operations Manager for Xerox UK, just bought a house, about to have first baby, about to get married.

I know both... so... if you fuck up at school you won't necessarily end up in the gutter. ANd if you go to Uni, you won't necessarily get that fantastic job, or any at all, either. Do what you feel like.

Don't stress out too much at this point man, it usually takes people awhile to figure out what they want to do with their life, and at this point I'm pretty convinced that most people never do. So don't rule out college just because you aren't sure who you want to be. College is actually a really good place to figure that stuff out, provided you make the effort to be a good student and actually get a degree. What you study for undergrad isn't extremely extremely important, and a lot more doors are open for you with a degree.

But then again it may not be right for you or you may need a few years or whatever. I'm a recent grad and I absolutely loved college, so that's kind of why I'm quick to suggest it.

Good luck.

Like everyother job, the military has it's ups and downs. A lot of times the downs are overbearing to the ups, but the ups are really nice (did that make any sense?). I joined the Air Force because it seemed to fit me the best. I have never been a meat head, so I couldn't really join the Army or the Marines, and the Navy just didn't interest me.

I knew signing up, that since I loved working with my hands and doing the minimal amount of paperwork possible, I wanted to be a jet engine mechanic. I love my actual job. I come into work about a half hour early, check out tools, and if there is a broken engine, I fix it. It's great. What I don't like is all the politics that come with being in the military. Everyone's experience with the military is different though. What you go through if you join is what you make of it. If you want to join make sure you have a firm understanding of the bad along with the good.

I think if I do, it will be the Army. An old teacher of mine used to blab on about her son in the Marines every day and that kinda killed it for me. Marines this, Marines that, did you know the Marines did this? On and on and on.

Enough about my old teachers, again you are right. It probably is an idenity issue, ever since I was wee small I've been interested in the military, especially planes. But I my dreams of ever piloting a military jet were crushed by my evil school nurse. She was cackling with evil laughter when I failed some color test. I am slightly color blind in the red and green colors. Only a few shades, but just enough to rule me out of piloting.

Damn whore.

That sounds more like an personal identity kind of thing to me, so maybe the Air Force would be the weaker choice compared to the Army or Marines - or even the Navy.

"Unless you just want to do military stuff and don't care about whether or not you support the reasoning behind the work you're doing."

Yeah it is hard to explain, but you pretty much hit it on the mark.

My best friend is in the Air Force, and says he thinks it is basically the least stressful. Then again, he has taken a bullet while in flight...

Computer graphics. There's a reason so many people who are Bored At work also seem to play with Photoshop alot.

It's not necessary to have a degree, especially if you have marketable skills. It's just easier. Of course, many people with degrees have been flipping burgers - and still are - with this so called "jobless recovery." Also, consider that the degree itself is important. A philosophy major does not usually make for great marketability.

I don't know Darth...something that you like doing that people get paid for? If you don't support the war, though, I don't think the military is a smart decision. Unless you just want to do military stuff and don't care about whether or not you support the reasoning behind the work you're doing.

My best friend in high school joined the marines right after graduation, as his grades were terrible and even with the school's prestige he never would've gotten in anywhere. I think that worked out rather well for him, but I haven't spoken to him in months so I don't know if his thoughts have changed.

I'm in Army ROTC, I like that alright. Duke's program is really small though, and our cadre is awesome, so I've had a really good experience. I've talked to some people who really hate the army, and others who really love it. The only enlisted army guys I know are in the Old Guard up here at Fort Myer, near DC, and they all hate it. The Old Guard are responsible for Presidential color guards, funerals and guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, so that might have something to do with why the guys I know aren't the biggest fan of their jobs. The officers I know are all friends' parents, career, and love it.

College is very different from high school though, so you might want to give it a try. With Army ROTC, You aren't required to contract with ROTC until your junior year, so you can participate in ROTC for two years (without a scholarship) without making a commitment and without owing any time. Once you're in your junior year, you have to either sign the contact (thus owing four years) or drop out of the program. So, you could go to college for a year, try ROTC, and make a decision after that.

Good luck!

As far as the military goes, you have to decide what you want to do. If you want high tech training, the Air Force is the best bet (Although the other services have high tech fields, the AF seems to have more opportunity).

The Navy has a great Nuclear program, for subs & carriers (Not bombs)

Army has a variety of fields, and is physically more challeging thatn the other two mentioned above

The USMC is by far the most challenging physically, emotionally and mentally. If you are tough enough to become a Marine, you will always be a Marine.

I was Army for 10 months, had a recurring leg injury from my teenage years hit me and was discharged Honorably, but with EPTS (Existed Prior to Time Served)status.

Question #3: My dad didn't go to college and he makes beaucoup bucks. He did get training through the Navy in nuclear engineering, though.

I try and make all my students strive for their best. If their best is considered mediocre by other's standards, oh well. It's still great. Maybe your teachers/counselors/principal are sensing that you have more potential than you may let on to them? I dunno. You won't be a failure if you don't persue higher learning, but it'll limit your job options.
