I met joe in the sixth grade. He had just moved from Alabama and was pretty shy, but an overall nice kid and fun to hang around. He came over to my house a few times and we would play the guitar, I was stunned by his ability. We were in the sixth grade, keep in mind, and he was playing stairway to heaven just as well as smells like teen spirit (okay, maybe not that well. But it was pretty damn close!).
The summer came and I didn't see him until next year, we were on the same "team". Teams were just a group of 100 to 200 kids who followed a similar schedule. We were pretty good friends, we would bug our teachers and do normal seventh grade things, he never really brought up music much. Then he and a pretty good drummer played in the talent show. Joe played a long solo he wrote and the drummer just kept a nice beat for him. Afterwards I excused myself to use the bathroom, and went outside where he would be loading his amp, guitar, and drum set into his dads truck.
"Hey Joe, that was great!"
"Yeah thanks, hey I'm looking for a singer and back up guitarist. You wanna do it?"
Well I stopped playing guitar now, but I wasn't too bad at the time and I would only get better. I agreed. He then gave me a CD with smells like teen spirit, and a few other songs that escape my mind right now.
"Learn these, come to my house in a few days."
I helped him pack the rest of his gear then went back to my homeroom where I was yelled at for leaving the talent show early. Sorry teacher, but I didn't want to watch some prepubescent whore lip sink to the latest Britney Spears. I had porn of womenz at home, fool.
Fast forward a few days later, and I'm at Joes house in his bandroom, It wasn't nearly as impressive as it is now, but at the time it was awesome to me. Lots of big amps, a decent drum set, a computer for recording and burning purposes. Now you may ask "How the hell does Joe, a seventh grader, afford this?" A simple question, a simple answer.
His older brother was a drug dealer for a little while. I never asked much, he never told.
Well we played for a few hours that day, and that was the start of everything. In our four years we played at some birthday parties, got a gig at the opening of a local pool, played at the talent shows. Most of the members of the band played in the battle of the bands, but that was just a little before me. The videos were sweet, Guy makes a solo on the spot. Very cool.
I havn't played the guitar for a while now, or sung. Since I moved I've touched the guitar maybe once or twice, and I feel like I lost my singing voice due to not using it. I don't think I could join another band down here. One thing is for sure, the people I played with were very, very talented. The locals round here suck. And I know they would never have any of the equipment we had, like recording equipment for example. Speaking of recordings....
