Well, I remember Kefer telling me months ago to see The Insider, but I did not
have the opportunity until just last night. Now that the Oscar nominations are
out and it received a Best Picture nomination, that was enough incentive for me.
This movie is about 60 Minutes and a piece that they are doing on the tobacco
industry. Al Pacino is the producer of 60 Minutes and Russel Crowe is a former
vice president for one of the big tobacco companies. Basically, Russel Crowe
has something to say, Pacino wants him to say it, but the tobacco industry,
the network, and even the government of Kentucky is trying to prevent him from
saying it and moreso, from having him appear on 60 Minutes.
There is a lot of intensity in this film, and this is where the two star actors
earn their pay. Russel Crowe is a confused, depressed, frightened, and pissed
off character. Pacino as always is the cool, confident, loud-mouthed man in
control pulling strings for what he believes is right. In an excellent support
role, Christopher Plummer plays Mike Wallace, the 60 Minutes anchor. Not
knowing who Christopher Plummer was going into the theater, at the end of the
movie, I thought the actor actually was a news anchor. My mistake.
The only bad thing I could say about the movie is that it didn't have enough of
Gina Gershon. For someone who has played sexy exciting roles in movies such as
Bound, Face Off, and of course Showgirls, she has a very small and not at all
sexy role in this movie. I got over it though.
Overall, this one gets a 4.5/5.0 rating. I was hoping for just a little bit
more from Pacino, and there were a couple of scenes that seemed to come from
out of nowhere. That aside, the movie was great.
