While at work today, something totally inexplicable happened. While stocking the ice cream freezer, I usually get a song stuck in my head. Most of the time, I'll sing nice and loud since no one's around that could possibly hear my horrible singing voice. It's a little bit of fun in my work day, but it's mostly just to keep me warm since the freezer is kept at 20 degrees below (that's degrees Fahrenheit for all of you who are sane enough to use the metric system. My apologies for your having to convert that because of us backward-ass Americans).
Everything so far today had been standard operating procedure at my work. When I stepped into the freezer and started stocking though, the weirdest thing popped into my head. Do you remember the animated Disney movie The Jungle Book? I do, although I haven't seen it in years and years. The song that popped into my head tonight was "The Bare Necessities" from the Jungle Book. And strangely enough, I could remember some pretty big chunks of the lyrics.
I've always heard people discuss subliminal messages in Disney movies and things like that, but I've never considered the songs themselves to be that insidious. The more I thought about the lyrics as I sang them, the more I realized how good of a message the song sends. Once I got over my initial shock, I was actually glad to have such an uplifting song brighten my day.
"Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities.
Forget about your worries and your strife.
I mean the bare necessities, old Mother Nature's recipes.
That brings the bare necessities of life."
After my little karaoke session, I emerged from the freezer with a bounce in my step. Disney brightened my day (or night as it may be) with a little ray of sunshine from my childhood. I think tonight was the first time I was old enough to pick up the pun in the song as well. Maybe the greater understanding and soothing of my soul stemmed from that.
Or maybe I spent way too long in a freezer that's 20 degrees below zero.

Goddammit. I tried attaching a picture and everytime I would try to submit, Explorer would crash. The end result was this posting 4 times instead of once and there being no picture once it finally did post. My apologies to the Uber and non-Uber alike for my computer's freak-out.
