Something's Gotta Give...Maybe It's Diane Keaton's Modesty (2143 hits)

Last weekend, I decided to spend my well-earned money on my favorite actor. His sarcasm and his charm never cease to make me smile. However, this time, Jack left me rudely dissappointed. Elo and I went to see "Something's Gotta Give" with Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, Amanda Peet, and Keanu Reeves. It was directed by the same guys who did "What Women Want," so I figured it couldn't be all that bad. I was wrong, but for a good reason. Demographic.

------------------------------------------------

Here's what happens in "Something's Gotta Give":

Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson)is the typical dirty old man, who I have seen play the role numerous times. He is the eternal bachelor. He goes on a romantic getaway with his newest girlfriend Marin (Amanda Peet) at her mother's beach house in the Hamptons. Harry, being the elderly horny guy he is, gets chest pains in the middle of getting it on with Marin.

Erica Barry (Diane Keaton), Marin's mom, ends up nursing him back to health. He falls for her, she writes a play about him and falls for his doctor. Cue Parisian greenscreen and brandy. She breaks up with the doctor, and gets back with him.

-----------------------------------------------

Confused yet? Me too.

-----------------------------------------------

Here-I'll break it down with the important parts:

Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson are old. Jack is probably a sex god for a man his age, but Diane is not. There is no need to show either of them buckass nekkid. Why couldn't it be Amanda Peet or Keanu's white ass again?

Check-See Old People Naked.

Long......So very...VERY...long. They get together almost about fifty times. COME ON. WE ALL KNOW THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. Just get on to the happy ending already.

Check-See Old People Chase Each Other.

Well, there. See, checklist of things I wanted to see this weekend are done. Can you feel the sarcasm?

-----------------------------------------------

But if you answer yes to the following questions, this movie is for you!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Are you old?

2. Do you like to see old people naked?

3. Do you enjoy old people films?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This movie was not aimed at young people as Amanda Peet and Keanu Reeves in the commercials portray it to be. Definitely aimed at the 40+ crowd. Elo and I were the only people in the theater who weren't worried about our social security checks being on time.

All in all, if I looked at this movie from the 40+ point of view, I would probably say "Go Diane" for baring it all at her age. I would probably also say that Jack Nicholson deserves another oscar for banging a girl thirty years younger than him. But then again, I only have a 20 year old point of view, and the movie drags on way longer than this review does. With naked old people.

*I give it one star for trying. And for the 40+ crowd, three stars all the way baby!*

Yes Aud, I'm 40+ and I think there are worse things than waking up naked next to Diane Keaton. Like, say, waking up naked next to Jack Nicholson.

Gotta disagree with Spikey on this one.
Maybe I understood it wrong, but in our country
we don't want people getting naked. I agree with Spikey
that people shouldn't judge others on their bodies, but
it is inappropriate in a public movie for any nudity of any kind.
Maybe I'm just implying that this movie is for elder people, and it is,
but there is no need for us to look at Keaton's bare body. I would
say it would be extortion of the elderly, but maybe it
was just a flare for old people to get some "flava'"in their life. Jack Nicholson
also gives an unrealistic image that off your charm and good looks
at an old age, one could receive girls and be a "playa'." That is just
untrue. Does anyone know another person that had a sex with another when they were
less than half the age of that person? (Not for money, but for love)

Well I'm all down for less clothes on people in general, but there are some that don't need to be taken off.

I don't want to steal the thunder away from this, but that scene at the hot tub in About Schmidt. I could've lived without that.

audjgirl,

No worries, you're entitled to your opinion. But I'd rather watch Keaton and Nicholson do ANYTHING then watch Keanu. He sucks sweaty balls. Crappy, crappy actor. Sorry, I'm done.

ReallyBored,

No, you've got a point. There is a wish fulfillment/fantasy aspect to entertainment, which is all well and good. Sometimes you just want to be taken away, and that's fine. But there's a larger point, which is that the entertainment industry communicates cultural messages, and people internalize stuff they see in movies, on TV and in print. If the only thing we EVER see are perfect 10s, it sends a message. I'm not saying that we should do away with the beautiful people, just that there's room for normal people to be represented too.

I think the world could use a few more Amanda Peet nude scenes.

I was gonna go on a rant about this "It was directed by the same guys who did "What Women Want," so I figured it couldn't be all that bad." sentence being retarded but then SpikeGoddess replied with one of the most interesting comments ever.

"We need to see more naked bodies in this country---more NORMAL naked bodies"

No no no no no.

SpikeGoddess, your an artist. Your cultured. Your intelligent. Your attractive. Being all these things is great, but there is one problem. Your have lost touch with the average invidual. The average smuck on the street sees NORMAL naked bodies all the fucking time. Every girl that i have had sex with (besides a few outliers) were average. Most people follow the same suit.

Everyday I see honda civics, and toyota camrys, and buick skylarks, and ....etc etc. The same shit everyday. Its those days when i see a ferrari or a Viper or something to that effect that i got WOW. When i see a movie i would prefer to see a WOW, not a OK. Maybe i'm wrong, but i thought the concept of movies were to take you away from your normal life for alittle while.

But i could be completely fucking wrong.

well, then clearly i don't catch on to quick :D

whatever, spike if you do come back, just know this wasn't about bashing keaton again...

i suppose i shouldn't have assumed anything before going to see it. i didn't read reviews. i think i had an idea in my head of what it should have been like--and it really wasn't :D

I gotta tell ya - I new it wasn't about Amanda Peet and Keanu. #1 Diane Keaton and Jacks names were bigger on the posters than Amanda's and Keanu's. Even thought they are bigger named stars if they weren't the main characters their names would be secondary. #2 I read the online summary and reviews of the movie. I had no surprises other than how overly long it was.

the point of this review is not to necessarily bash diane keaton.

did anyone else think that it was going to be about amanda peet and keanu reeves getting it on?

maybe i'm completely alone in this. which is ok. but really, i walked out of the movie theater feeling like i got sucked in by false advertising.

i should really stop ignoring the PG-13 warnings :D

Spike - I totally agree. Plus for her age I thought she looked pretty hot....so did my BF. The only thing I could have lived without was Jack's ass. Seeing it made me laugh though...

I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago, this wouldn't have been half bad if it had been about 45 mins shorter. There were a few good laughs....only a few. Once you figured out who everyone was and how they related to each other you knew the outcome.... I hate it when that happens...

Sorry, I gotta disagree.

I for one don't like the idea that only the intensely beautiful and perfectly airbrushed are portrayed as the only people who can be sexy or even sexual. We need to see more naked bodies in this country---more NORMAL naked bodies. There are too many people who think they should look like an impossible image when they take their clothes off, and it makes people sexually insecure.

Beautiful people aren't the only ones with stories worth telling on screen. Beautiful people aren't the only ones who have a right to be sexual.

I took my clothes off a year ago onstage for this very reason---to say, "Here's my body. It is what it is." And do you know how many other actresses (most of whom I consider EXTREMELY HOT) came up to me and said, "Thank-you so much for doing that"? I had one girl come up to me crying afterwards. Just because I showed the real thing and didn't hold back. I completely support Diane Keaton in this, and I think that what she did was brave both artistically and personally. It's what we need more of as a society.
