in reference to the previous post about Bush and his state of the union speech
(more specifically about gay marriage)
First of all, the president has every right to support a constitutional amendment in order to bypass the justices. thats one of the checks and balances. the supreme courts duty is to determine whether something is constitutional or not.
if they decide something is unconstitutional, the other branches of government can change the constitution so that the new law would work. so, Bush is completely within his right to support an amendment to make marriage solely between a man and a woman.
i dont think he should though. i agree with the thought that a religious marriage can be limited to a man and a woman. if thats what your religion believes then thats okay by me. however, where does the government decide that a civil union between a man and a woman has value whereas one between a woman and a woman doesnt. i dont see the logic. Homosexuality exists. people love people of the same sex.
why do people care so much? im not gay. i dont want to marry a man. but if someone else does, go for it. its none of my business who other people love.
someone explain to me why the government has the right to limit civil unions to men with women. like i said, religiously, i can see a church saying 'no' to gay marriage. its a private institution. but why can a country deny rights to citizens because of who they choose to love?

This shouldn't have been a post.
This kind of thing has no place as a constitutional amendment. For one, the President does NOT have a right to just change the Constitution if he wants something done and can't get it to be done. The Constitution is what he swore to uphold, not change as he felt like it. The executive branch is responsible for enforcing the law, not making it. That is a job for Congress.
This should be left to the states and courts of law.
