I think it was Jinky who was asking me questions about having or not having time to do my own art, and expressed some interest in seeing more.
Well, oddly enough Jinkster, a few weeks ago I was able to sell the idea of illustrating a cover for my company's next catalog in my favorite medium - PENCIL! Whoopie for me! So I've been working on my latest portrait on and off for a little over a week, and I finally scanned in and made a jpeg for Ubersite to rip to shreads.
This drawing represents the killing of 3, count them: THREE birds with one stone.
1. I get the time to draw, something I miss very much.
2. I get paid to do it.
3. The portrait is of my best friend's eldest son, and I get to give it to her as a gift, and it's something that can be passed down to him in the future.
I rock.
It's a little "Norman Rockwell-ish" compared to most of the stuff I usually do, but when you're illustrating for an Educational Software catalog, that doesn't pose a problem. Yeah I know, stop babbling and show us the fucking picture, we don't care about your dumb ass catalog...

Value- If lights and darks were to apply more dramatically, this piece would pop out much more, which would make the person looks more alive.
Creativity- This was just simply a replication of a photograph, anyone that has studied art should be able to do this. By applying your sense of style into this would makes it more unique.
Space- I'm not sure why you'd just leave the background white, but if you were to create some sort of energy in the background; my suggestion would be do some shading or a boarder behind the person.
This was done rather nice, it isn't bad, but in my opinion it sure wasn't great. Every piece of art should have a soul; this was just nothing more than a picture. And may I add that the kid's facial quality resemble much like Michael Jackson.

i used to be able to draw people almost as well as this (but Loren is still better). i wish i had never given up on art. i found some old paintings i did when i went home last, and i felt terrible for letting my gift go to waste. i have much respect for artists that can use their ability so well.
what dates are you going to be here, Loren? i forgot what you told me, and i have to make plane reservations before the last weekend in February. i didn't do it yet because i didn't want to screw up and make them for when you're going to be here.

I've always had a very deep respect for people with some level of artistic talent. I also know that children are possibly the hardest to draw, simply because it's very hard making a child LOOK like a child in a drawing. Congratulations, I am impressed.

Do you think that to be truly free to create art that you would have to give up personal comforts to explore the possibilities or could you still find not just the time to do what you love, but the drive and will power to see personal projects through when your day job has you doing more mundane tasks?
I hope you get the opportunity to do more work like this because it's wonderful to see. It just bums me out to read that you love to draw and yet you don't get enough time to do it. Maybe there will be more projects like this in the future where you're at now after they see what you've done.
