Isle 5. It houses the sugar, the raisins and untold future resentment.
They stare into the eyes of the child as it cries. It's not a petulant or a spoilt sound. Attention is not the goal. These penetrating sounds are born of pain and misery.
The betrayal and fear seeps out of the child. It looks around for a saviour and back to it's tormentor with pleading eyes.
It is in full view of any passersby who wish to look.
People do pass by. They do look. They can hear. They pretend not to and carefully examine the head of lettuce in their trolley. Better make sure the bread is on top and not being crushed by the mango juice.
Hear no evil. See no evil. Monkeys perhaps?
Others mumble under their breath as they walk past. They arch their eyebrows and shake their heads, to show their disapproval of the situation. No one shall doubt their conviction. They have high moral standards.
Next to the spectacle, staff on ladders continue to place goods on the shelves. The sorrow on the child's face is captivating. Just another day.
She beats her child at the supermarket.

Your feedback is, as always, welcome. If it is not conidered prying, I would be interested to know what sort of background/religion you have emerged from.
I too came from a relatively strict background. My punishments however, in hindsight, were always for the betterment of my character, and never brought about from mere anger from my parents inability to deal with me.
My parents will never read this, but thanks Mum and Dad, you're the best.

Another plus two for your response below.
In the religion in which I was indoctrinated, "spankings" were condoned totally, even encouraged. I would see other children taken out of the church building quickly to be hit, whipped, slapped etc. and this also happened to myself and my siblings when "needed."
Now, here in the US it's changed so much, just in the last 10-15 years: it's much more a rarity with my generation I think. I however don't get a chance to see many older children (6+) on a regular basis, so I'm not sure. I do see both of my sisters with their progeny (a girl of 2 and 2 boys aged 1 and almost 5) and they all receive spankings (except for the 1 year old) given with caution. It is good to see my sister's doing it this way, as I remember the belt at 4 years old and welts, etc.

Mr Blitzkreig_bob. The start of this very short tale describes the child as being in fear and betrayal.
Yes, some people hit their kids when they are being naughty. Some people just hit their kids. You can tell when a kid is being taught a lesson, and when one is being beaten.
or... don't you have kids.
