Anyone remember the times before gangsta rap? The times where you were happy to see a man named Fab Five Freddy? The times before Easy-E died of AIDS?
Me niether.
As a kid, I remember not being allowed to watch MTV and trying to figure out how I was going to get my next New Kids On The Block fix. So unless Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, or an Ernest Scared/Saved ::insert holiday or adjective here:: movie was coming on after it, I didn't know anything about it till I was a little bit older.
Needless to say, even without MTV, you can't avoid all music, so I did own Salt'N'Pepa, Jade, Brandy, Queen Latifah, and Biggie CD's. I knew most of the words from the boombox in my room and can remember waiting till my parents went to bed to sneak downstairs to watch MTV.
Sad thing is, my little sister (she's 17) bought this CD. It's called Yo! MTV Raps, A Journey Back In Rhyme. How catchy. Too bad she has no idea who half the artists are, and the other half have disappeared or died. She says it has good bass. She says the cheap crappy punk music she's listening to doesn't have enough.
Track Listing:
South Bronx - Boogie Down Productions
It`s Funky Enough - The D.O.C.
Ladies First - Queen Latifah/Monie Love
Can I Kick It? - A Tribe Called Quest
They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) - Pete Rock/CL Smooth
Flava In Ya Ear - Craig Mack
C.R.E.A.M. - Wu-Tang Clan
Player`s Anthem - Junior M.A.F.I.A.
Shook Ones Part II - Mobb Deep
It`s All About The Benjamins - Puff Daddy & The Family/Notorious B.I.G./Lil` Kim/The Lox
Push It - Salt-N-Pepa
It Takes Two - Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
Ain`t No Half-Steppin` - Big Daddy Kane
Children`s Story - Slick Rick
Wild Wild West - Kool Moe Dee
Top Billin` - Audio Two
Me Myself And I - De La Soul
Express Yourself - N.W.A.
All yours for $14.59. Ha.
Somethings should not bridge the generation gap. This is one of them. I stole it from her and put it in my microwave. We tried to use it as a frisbee but my dog caught it and bit down to hard. That's a real high velocity accident. Ha.

Ah, Back in the day, when MTV used to be worth a damn. I miss 'Headbanger's Ball.'
The current state of MTV is sad really, like watching a brilliant physicist gradually waste away from Alzheimer's until he's pissing himself and mumbling about whether 'Chicken of the Sea' is chicken or tuna.

Plus two because this: "I stole it from her and put it in my microwave." made me giggle. Out loud. At work.
Of course, I've been refusing to keep my amusement under wraps all week. There's nothing quite as fulfilling as apathy during your last week in a job.

what? That CD's gotta suck! How could they make an old school mix with out "Holla if ya hear me" by Tupac? Yet they put All about the Benjamins on there? What is the world coming to?
