Disclaimer: I don't know if this has been done before, and quite frankly I don't care.

Now, I know most of you are probably going to scream blasphemy at this, but things that need to be said need to be said, whether or not the general populace likes them or not. Particularly now the jokes in the Simpsons seem to be less humourous overall (for example, the frankly boring episode "The Bart of War"), I can't help wondering why futurama almost ended up canned, instead of replacing the simpsons as the matt groening cartoon people talk about the most. Now, I have nothing against the mostly classic first 13 seasons of the simpsons, but when something is this dead...

Futurama on the other hand is still fresh, and with the subject matter there seems like there can be a lot of interesting ideas and gags to come later.

Reasons I think Futurama is better than the Simpsons
1) There is a lot of life left in the subject matter, the main characters, and the plot in general, as opposed to the Simpsons where the recent episodes seem tired.
2) It has not been repeated a lot on television, even if one were to buy/download every futurama episode, there would likely be no way to see these episodes as often as you had the Simpsons, particularly the older Simpsons episodes
3) The better characters are given major roles, rather than as one-shot gags. In my opinion, the contest for characters between the two is between Dr Zoidberg and Hans Moleman, with honorary mentions given to Bender, Hermes, Duffman, Comic Book Store Guy and Professor Frink. The only thing that tilts the scales in Futurama's favour is that their better characters are used more often.
4) Futurama seems to have more gags per episode than the Simpsons, though this opinion may be purely subjective.

Though on the Simpsons side, because it has been around for a lot longer, it has a lot more quotable moments, including the origination of the word "meh".

Well anyway, thats my two cents on this matter

It needs to be said.

If you compare the series as a whole, obviously the Simpsons has more. However, in recent years, Futurama has been better.

Futarama rules over the Simpsons like The King Hementhotep over his legions of faithful slaves!

PS: BENDER RULES! The best character in a cartoon of all time?? Let's just say I like his style.

i'd have to agree with you, simpsons has gotten old, its time for a series finale. Futurama is new and there's new stuff they can do. Simpsons basically just rely on homer's stupidity nowadays. Futurama is a great show and Matt should concentarte on it.

I'm sure its been said before but they both use different comedy styles, hard to compare. Futurama is awesome but nothin will ever top The Simpsons. Simpsons are the trail blazers for all the newer shows. They're like what Beastie Boys did for current white hip hop or Sex Pistol etc did for punk the list goes on...
Anyway
Grandpa: Like the time a took the ferry to shelbyville, i had to get a new heal for my shoe... five bees for a quater they used to say... i had an onion tied to my belt which was the style at the time...

Dr Ziodberg: Hooray im helping...

I agree.
Simpsons seasons 4 to 7 were genius and nothing beats it.
However Futurama as a whole beats anything else Simpsons.

Futurama has its moments, but nowhere near the magnitude the Simpsons or Family Guy have.

Poor argumentation. Of course, when it comes to humour, it is hard to give a fulfilling definition.

It is late, and I cannot think any better myself... I guess my argumentation will go with the flow:

SIMPSONS!
Homer: "They have internet on computers now?"

+2 just because of all the idiots that still think The Simpsons is great. I'm a huge Simpsons fan, and have 20GB of episodes on my computer. Fortunately I don't have any episodes from seasons 13+. They're gotten tired, and rely on annoying gags to try and get laughs.

Futurama is pretty funny, and it is better than the current Simpsons episodes. You didn't do a very good job of making the comparison though.

Your argument is horribly flawed in my opinion. You use arguments that amount to pointing out that the simpsons has been around longer than futurama. Yes, yes it has. Yes, it is shown more. Yes, futurama is 'newer' or fresh, whatever. That makes no difference, however; even if last seasons of the simpsons are not as good as the first, the first are much better than the first of futurama. I like futurama a lot, but when I want something a little more 'smart', I watch the Simpsons.

Plus, no show makes fun of itself as well.

Lisa: You'll be snowball V! But to save money on food dishes, we'll call you snowball II.
Princ. Skinner: Isn't that sort of a cheat?
Lisa: I suppose so... principal TANZARIAN!
Skinner: Er... snowball II it is.

"reign of excellency?"

For a few years "The Simpsons" was teh only cartoon on TV, which could very well be the only reason it's viewed as the best. It's like shouting "I'm the best!" in a room with no people. It may be true then, and you may actually be a pretty good guy, but once other poeple show up you can't continue to make that claim jsut because you USED to be the only person in the room.

The Simpsons "reign of excellency" was nothing more than a pretty good show running in a time where everything else sucked. If it premiered for the first time tomorrow it wouldn't get near the rave reviews it does now.

Your decision to go to hell is your own choice...

granted, futurama is cool, and all, but The Simpsons are on their own cartoon eschalon of awesomeness. yes, they are getting stale, but that does not negate their reign of excellency.

The worst episode of The Simpsons is on a par with the best of Futurama.

IMHO.

------------------------

Retahded.

"The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" is easily ten times better than any Season 11 Simpsons ep, and at least 1.2 times better than even the best Simpsons ep. Simpsons, in hindsight, wasn't really all that great.

Sorry, but it's true.

I agree. Futurama IS better, mostly because Matt has grown more bitter & sarcastic ( if that's possible) in his dottage. The show benefits from that as much as the simpsons benefited from Matt selling hand made calendars & watching street freaks at the montrose arts festival.

And another thing: Grandpa Simpson, Professor Farnsworth & Matt Groening are obviously the same person.

Simpsons on a bad day > Futurama on a good day

The characters are better developed with multiple backgrounds, and layers of different stories. The universe of the Simpsons itself is far more than any Futurama series could ever be. As far as cheap jokes go, futurama takes the cake. The name itself is "futurama", and if that wasn't hint enough at the cheap gags, they use about 1000 lame future-based jokes rather than witty banter in between characters. I stopped watching futurama when it went into that Were-car episode. Stupid crap, plain and simple.

Simpsons remain unseated for the time because of family guy, but rest assured, the ol' show has some tricks up it's sleeve yet to come.

the simpson's WAS the greatest cartoon of all time.

Have you watched the newer episodes? pure crap. They are REALLY stretching it. As much as I hate to say it, the series needs to be put out of its misery.

What's this about Futurama "nearly" ending up canned? I thought they had cancelled the series. Fox screwed up bigtime with it's poor scheduling. Futurama got the worst "primetime" timeslot imaginable.

I agree, as much as I enjoyed the first 10 seasons of the Simpsons, it has lately started to go downhill. I'm not really the type to say "Oh its popular, now I hate it" it just seems like they are reaching sometimes. Futurama is underrated though.
