I have officially declared today an anniversary.
No, don't bother looking at my user info. I registered in June a couple of years ago, although I was around for a bit before that as a Random Joe.
Why is this night different from all other nights?
Wait, that's copyrighted for Passover. Let me start again.
Today is significant because it's the birth of modern Ubersite.
Much like the birth of Jesus Christ, it went unheralded at the time except by a select few and the exact date is a bit tricky to pin down. However, over time it would come to be the difference between B.C. and A.D.
Much like the Catholic church, such details don't bother me so I've decided to pick today and stick to it. Many years from now, this will all be shrouded in mystery and when scholars point out that the date is off by however many days, everyone will be so used to celebrating February 12th that it won't matter.
So... what is it that happened a year ago that caused Ubersite to go "modern"?
Well, back then it was a different place than it is now... almost so different as to be unrecognizable.
From an aesthetic standpoint, it looked almost exactly the same. The color scheme still screamed "my creator spent thirty seconds on me." We had lists on the left, post titles on the right, and Simpsons quotes on the bottom.
But none of that shit has ever been what Ubersite was about. It's content driven, baby. And if by content you mean the best conglomeration of random shit known to man, then you have Ubersite pinned down.
You've probably read the "About Ubersite" page before. Take a moment and go read it again. http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/about.cgi
Back then, Ubersite was just about as random as it claimed to be. There was no sense of an Uber community, just random folks popping in to occasionally write posts. I wandered in because boredatwork had a link called "You're a Racist, Dr. Seuss."
If you got 25 reviews on a post, you were the man. In fact, there used to be a category called the "Most Replied to Ever" on the left side. When bart took it down because it was irrelevant, the most replied to ever post was maybe at 150 replies, which today you can get just by talking about racism, abortion, or any of the other societal hotbuttons. If you wrote a post about racist abortions while on drugs, you'd probably get 1,000 replies.
So what changed? Why are things different now than they were then?
About this time last year, there weren't many names you'd recognize. Me, bart, yidele, PAS, Streetpunk... that's about it. (if you're oldschool and I didn't mention you here, sorry.) Of course there were others around, like SoxSexSax, fisher, and JP, most of whom the majority of you have never heard of but they were posting back in the day, and they always wrote great stuff.
Posts fell off the front page... oh about a week after they were submitted. 200 hits was the height of glory.
Things change... people change... hairstyles change. (reference anyone?)
New blood started to show up. These uppity newbies were cantankerous, generally obnoxious, and posted about stupid shit. I remember ripping into one in particular for thinking Random Joe was a single person.
She called me chubby, I made references to her biological clock... I told her I had posted my picture, and challenged her to post hers. We became "uberfriends". Little did I know what had started.
Her uber ID was (and still is) 500. A nice round number, and thinking it over, wow. It took Ubersite a long time to get to 500 registered users, and by the time the anniversary of her registration date came around, we were over 5,000. By the end of the day today, we will probably have our 6000th registered user (5978 at the time of this post).
What happened next was even more startling. These Ubernewbies joined with us old folks, and next thing you knew we had a sense of community. The posts began to not be quite so seemingly random.
That was a golden time for Ubersite. If you look at the Most Viewed Authors List, and click on each name, you'll see that a big chunk of the MVA list joined Ubersite between February and April of 2003.
As the sense of community grew, the desire to return and check up on the site more often grew. I wanted to see what Sky and Nicole had written lately, I wanted to see if hidden had come up with some other random drunken story. The number of posts grew. We got restricted to three posts per day before something would fall off the front page. I emailed bart about it and then finally figured out his name was Cilfone and not Clifone like I had always thought.
Boredatwork got more popular too. The number of people driven to the site every day grew, driven here by Maddox, boredatwork, and its own repuation. It took me quite some time to get on the most viewed list with something like 2,000 hits. Ryan Donovan's position as number two seemed every bit as unassailable as bart's at number one. How could one ever compete with the madcap genius of accusing Dr. Seuss of the very things he railed against in "Sneetches and other stories"?
The more the posts flew in, the more often people checked back in. That caused them to reply more, which stimulated more active conversation, which caused people to post more because they would get more of a response. It was, and still is, some kind of sick exponential growth with no apparent end in sight. I don't know where it's going to eventually go, but I've seen some statistics, and Ubersite gets more hits per day now than it did in the first few months of its existence.
Like any endeavour involving humans, the more people came to be involved, the less true anarchy worked. Rules had to be instituted. Some were official... No posting in all caps. No writing super long words in your titles. One post per day. Somebody even managed to get banned because we all got.
Others became "community enforced". The oldschool people (by which I mean people who had been around for a couple of weeks and made a name for themselves) would get together and gangbang anybody who made a dumb post.
Only later would we learn to our regret that this was exactly what some of them wanted.
It was a time when Uberusers were innocent and legends would be made. DDT made us all gasp in horror. Shock tactics don't work anymore... we're too jaded. People like the fake KoolMangs get ignored by everyone (except KoolMang I guess, sorry man).
Today this site is so damn popular that awesome users slip through the cracks. I mean, I didn't notice Matt Moriano or whoever you spell that name until after he had a full page of posts. You can't possibly read everything, unless you're unemployed and childless with no social life.
I'm just constantly amazed at what this site has become, and I realized today that the modern incarnation of Uber started about a year ago with Loren, Hidden, Sky, Murphy, Nicole, PAS, Yidele, Rizzo, Manfre, and others who I love but didn't mention.
I mean hell, 20 of us even got together a couple months ago and hung out in Atlantic City all weekend. From places as far away as Florida and Chicago. It's amazing what can grow out of a little idea. And has anyone else noticed that Qbarsite sounds almost exactly like Ubersite? Congrats to bart on such an amazing website, and congrats to everyone who helped take it from a backwater idea depository to a well known website. I had a coworker show me my own Knockoff Porn Movie Titles post recently.
I can't think of a good conclusion, so here's a picture of a monkey to distract you.

awesome picture. we had to make a cover page for our history term papers in high school, and the cover page was ungraded. so we were supposed to put something stylish/funny on the cover. mine had the title of my paper in big letters, and then that image, minus the uberstuff, taking up half the page.
