This is getting pathetic. What is it with this new fascination about banning people? The position that many of you have seem inclined to take is one of idolatry and reverence for your dear friend Bartholomew.
But why? Of course Bart must be given props for creating the site, but haven't you done enough of that? Now it seems that you are falling behind him, almost begging him to start banning people. This is just a testament to your pack mentality, or more accurately, herd mentality.
Don't get me wrong, my intention is not to be some sort of champion for people like fingerbang, because all truth be told, he is an idiot. But the course of action that so many of you advocate, including bart, the grand master himself, is to ban people like him.
On what grounds? So far, I have separated your reasoning into two distinct, mutually exclusive categories.
1)Because he is a dumbass.
Yeah? Well look in the fucking mirror, because 75 percent of this site is just a big, cooperative multitude of dumbasses. That means, odds are, you are one of them. Do YOU want to be banned?
2)Because he has multiple accounts.
First of all, many people on this site have had more then one account. Fabish, most notably, and Mick, as well, both had alternate personas. Should they be banned too?
This is what I enjoy, the blatant, selective hypocrisy that you people emanate.

It's so fucking played out, people. If there is going to be a cull, then it is going to be a natural process of trial and error. Either people are going to find something worth their effort to participate on this site, or they are going to leave. It is the same way for everybody. Razor, or Yidele, or Istaros, occasionally immerse themselves in a high brow, intellectual debate about (insert philosophical topic here). Loren snorts a line of cocaine and projects her self loathing onto teenagers. Murphy writes pessimistic, intriguing, yet insightful stories. Cats Cradle projects satire into the site. Etc, etc, etc.
Fingerbang loves to start some shit.
There is no discernable difference.
So just take Bart's cock out of your mouth's, shut it, and move right along, ladies, because Ubersite should not be policed by opinions, especially by opinions so implicitly controlled by your own lofty self delusions about Worth.

I haven't been to ubersite in a while. I've been busy I guess. I sat down this morning and thought I'd see what was new. And with my luck, this is the first post I get to. The post, actually, is perfectly fine, I actually agree with it. +1.
But good Lord, the replies. Ubersite, what the hell happened to you? Tell me this is just this post. Tell me you aren't all this pathetic on the other ones. Because honestly, when I read the replies, I had this image in my head.
It was a high school cafeteria. And about half the people were sitting at one table and the other half of the people were sitting at another table. There they sat yelling insults back and forth at each other. With the other members of their table backing them up no matter how dumb and unthought out their comment was.
Maybe that's why I haven't been to ubersite in so long. I always stood by the fact that I came here to get AWAY from high school. And lately it seems like you guys are just as bad.
Now, I'm going to go read another post. Because I still have hope. But this thread, dear god let it die. Forget it ever happened. Move on. And let us never speak of it again.

No shit. Several users on here are just here for the hits. I checked the profiles of a few of the more annoying ones, and a lot of them are quickly approaching the most viewed authors list. I don't think any of us want them on there.

I think this is the only time the name/word 'fingerbang' has been used in a serious manner.
I still see no justified reason for his banning. His attempt to get a higher rating worked, but no matter the height of his rating, people still thought him to be a dumbass. His plan didn't work. More people may look at it considering the higher rating, but then they will probably bring that rating down. His plan would probably end up getting him a lower rating. I haven't responded to this post up until now because I simply didn't care... I figured you wouldn't listen to me because you think I'm part of the conspiracy.

It was back when the community was first gelling in its modern sense. Tim came on and we felt like he was trying to unravel that, and when he actually drove Tina away from Ubersite in tears we lashed out. It was an emotional gut reaction.
If you look at the responses to Tim's early stuff, it's a combination of "I hate you" and "OK if you wrote more shit like that I wouldn't hate you".
Tim was not an example of what was to come. He was not a McBain, or a fingerbang, or The Masked Assailant, or the Real Toms. He contributed things, and we all knew he was funny and had potential... the issue we had was that he truly hurt someone's feelings and while that may sound silly in the context of Ubersite today, it made sense to all of us at the time (not including bart in that).
We had made Ubersite our little corner of the web, so to speak, and Tim was fucking that up. Looking back on it, that email chain was an unfair thing for me (us) to do, putting pressure on bart by threatening to have his most viewed author's list walk away en masse. At the time, I felt like I was trying to save Ubersite from ruin, looking back on it I was reacting kneejerk fashion to a threat that wasn't there like a dipshit. Call me Dubyah. I really am ashamed about how I acted.
But that's all water under the bridge, Tim and I are square. I highly doubt fingerbang will come forth with great posts anytime soon... DDT was a unique situation.

Ok, many more good points brought up here. In no particular order...
Yes, there is an implied one person <-> one user restriction in place, although I would not go so far as to state it as a rule. There are plenty of people with multiple accounts and often times those are valuable for whatever reason. One example I can think of is Woofers McGee. I myself had an alter ego a long time ago that I haven't used in some time. I'll fess up now... this was posted by me: http://www.ubersite.com/m/1120
It's totally subjective as to what is "acceptable" and what is not. I intentionally have never written out any strict rules because any rule should be broken at some point. The site as a system does adhere to certain rules - things like "one post per user on the front page", "author's ratings and anonymous ratings don't count in total post rating", and so on. Those are rules governing functionality, not subject matter. There are times when people do things with the intention of getting around those rules for their own benefit. Sometimes that results in a better outcome, but most of the time it does not.
In this instance, I had a strong suspicion that fingerbang was circumventing the rules to try to artificially inflate the ratings on his post or drive it up the most heated list. There is no legal system in place with official charges, a jury trial, etc. If I suspect that someone is doing something they shouldn't be doing, I either have to take action, investigate further, or do nothing. What I do at this point is totally subjective.
For example, in this case, the suspect was fingerbang. I think fingerbang is generally worthless. Those two elements combined means he does not get a fair trial, his sentencing is left exclusively up to me, and the execution is immediate. If the same actions had been carried out by Razor, I would have either done nothing, sent him an email, or left a comment someplace where he would see it. It's the difference between getting into a fight with a friend, getting into a fight with someone at work, and getting into a fight with a drunk stranger in a bar. It is impossible for a human being to be objective. I'd be lying if I said I was able to be totally objective.
So is there a clique that governs ubersite? No. Are there certain folks who get along better than others? Yes. Am I immune from the effects of social interaction with other human beings? No. Does this imply that I do things based on the influence from the people I get along with? Sometimes, but only if I agree with it.
I think anyone here would be surprised as to how many requests I get to remove things from the site, delete accounts, ban people, etc. I ignore many of these and reply to others with explanations. Occasionally there is something that requires some other kind of special attention. A good example would be copyright infringement aka. plagiarism. If it's brought to my attention that something is plagiarized and the copyright owner requests that I take it down, I would be legally required to do so or face a potential lawsuit. Ignoring such a request would be irresponsible of me as it could mean the end of ubersite entirely. If you don't believe me, look at what happend to MP3.com after Universal Music sued them for something like a hundred billion dollars. Fortunately, anyone who has contacted me about such a thing has understood the dynamic of the site and not gone so far as to demand that I take something down.
The only time anyone has ever been banned based on someone else's recommendation was in the case of DDT. That one was driven by Razor in an email to a bunch of different people. All the replies to the email were either indifferent or in favor of a ban. I explained in detail that I would do it, but it wasn't a long term thing, there are ways around the ban, others would show up like that, etc. Then a day or two later, Kaelic posted a long thing about how I was the equivalent of John Ashcroft and a long debate ensued. About three days later, I went through the database and looked at all the stuff from DDT and realized that most of it - while aggresive and intentionally instigating - did not qualify him for a ban in my mind. A lot of what had been perceived as terror from DDT was actually a combination of DDT along with hidden and crash's interactions with DDT. After that conclusion, without consulting anyone else, I removed the ban. I think Razor expressed some doubt with the move and hidden swore never to return, but I couldn't justify it to myself.
As far as people praising the decision or going against it, I normally give more weight to the arguments against it. People are blood thirsty. As soon as someone like fingerbang is banned they chime in saying that they're glad he was banned because he's an idiot. They say "Bart can do whatever he wants" and "fingerbang is a dumbass" and "how dare you, you shouldn't question Bart" and other things along those lines. Other people say "Bart is an asshole" or "Agreeing with Bart is Agreeing with Hitler" and so on. Because of comments like that, other people begin to distort the actual rationale for the ban having been put in place.
I didn't ban him because he is an idiot. There are plenty of entertaining idiots on this site. I didn't ban him because he said something bad about me. I didn't ban him as some sort of way to flex muscle power. I banned him because from my limited investigation, he appeared to have been using multiple accounts to get around the rules that govern the system. Sure, I could be wrong. If I thought that I was always right, there would be no Ubersite, there would only be me. I'm more than willing to hear whatever anyone else has to say. If after all that I decide that I was mistaken, I'm not too proud to reverse the decision and remove the ban. It generally helps matters if the other person in the matter is civilized and polite in the matter instead of vowing to get around the ban, launch a DDoS against the site, and so on.
In the end, I'm just one human being trying to make something that keeps people entertained. I am not a god, a prophet, a savior, a king, a dictator, or a hero. Jared, I swear, I'm just a regular guy. I try to do what I think is right, but I am as capable as anyone else of making a bad decision. The more people who use this site, the more responsibility I have to accept for the repercussions of any bad decision I make. One day I accidentally banned an AOL proxy server and lost portions of the American south east. Sorry about that, Ashlee, Kristen, and anyone else who was affected.
This is all part of what makes ubersite real.

If they don't get a +2 from fingerbang, they can't bitch that they didn't get one because if you want to post something that is good enough to warrant a +2 it should appeal to more than one asshole. Would people be in an uproar if the entire front page was filled with +2's? Hell yes. Because by giving everyone who posts a +2, you are giving them the false sense of security that their post was good, even though it could've been something to the effect of WWJD= Why Won't Jews Die. Your argument was actually very well though out and articulated. I was thoroughly surprised. You are one of those users that are semi obscure, and therefore occasionally get mixed up with others. I have to say that I am mildly impressed.
However, I don't think that Bart is a bad guy, like you seem to think is my perception of him. He does manage this site very well, and he normally writes intelligent posts. The point of this particular post was to shed light on something I felt went against the grain of the professed philosophy of this site. I never called Bart a "fucking fag" or "idiot" etc. I just didn't think it was cool the way that he banned fingerbang. I thought it was a hasty decision. I thought the haste was due to the fact that fingerbang was an asshole to him.
These weren't invalid or asinine claims. It is an all too apparent fact that there is a clique on this site, which is also completely normal. It is a natural progression for any "society" be in online or not. However, it isn't right when the clique begins to dominate the website, influencing it in ways that detract from its element of freedom. This phenomenon was particularly poignant back when drink was getting the boot. I keep bringing that up because it is significant, & it was the _sole_ reason that drink ddt got banned. Nobody can really dispute that. Razor, in particular, was the main proponent, actively campaigning that the "clique" (which was the most viewed authors list back in the day) would actually leave the site if drink were allowed to stay.
Now, this was completely unfair to Bart. It was as if he were being given an ultimatum by the site's most dynamic users, which I think was incredibly selfish on behalf of those that participated. The upshot; Drink got fucked in the ass by a bunch of rabid idiots.
This was reminiscent of back then, in that several people were giving Bart the textual equivalent of a standing ovation when he canned fingerbang. Fingerbang, (whose name, I must admit, is getting annoying even to type) never made three posts in one day entitled "suck this dildo fat motherfuckers". He never did anything really, except flame Bart. Bart never so much as warned anybody when he banned him, and perhaps if he had, he could have been told that several people in the office (accounting for the same I.P addresses) were all on the site, effectively taking away any reason for his banning. These things lead me to believe to that it was a bit of a shitty move on the site owners part to give him the boot.
I am aware of the irony that this is only my opinion, which as you inferred conflicts with the statement "this site should not be policed by opinion". But guess what? My opinion doesn't hold enough weight to deny people access to the site, like Bart's does, and like the cliques has. So yeah, that about wraps this up. Hope this answered any questions you had, and thanks for the input, lady.

Many many great points on here, lets see if I can address them. First multiple accounts, where did it ever say this was a no-no. I for one never seen this mention till now. And if it is such a big no-no, why, they are just different personalities, and isnt that everyone on here. For example would most of you say the things you say here in "real-life," I for one wouldnt. I use this place to write about things and post stuff that just falls into my head. Just for the simple fact for others to enjoy or hate, doesnt bother me. At times it is more fun to get "flame" than praised, more entertainment value in a good flame. Somethings that I post don't fall well into the precieved personalites of my user, so why not post under a different account that will better suit the posts' message. I see nothing wrong with this, in fact I think it is better that way so as one will only read post made by certain users and disregard the post of others.
It was said in the beginning that fingerbang would spam other post with -2's. Did anyone think maybe he didnt like what was posted, does everyone have to like the same thing. From viewing his post one can reach an understanding of his liking, and though fucked up, it is his liking and not ours, so if he -2's then he -2's, he didnt like your post, move on. Now to be an devils advocate, if fingerbang was to spam post with +2's would anyone say anything, HELL NO. Sideburns, you said he spammed the front page with -2's, would you be bitching if he spammed with +2's. Honestly I dont think you would. I know I wouldnt, I would be happy to have fingerbang viewing my post if all he did was +2, in fact if he +2ed everything I doubt anyone would want him gone.
Now for the IP block, well with the blockage of fingerbang also came my blocking. And I to have a way around it. So for matters to be straight, fingerbang does not have 5 different accounts, I dont know if he even has more than one. I have more than one, I admit, for the reason that some of my post are more of a serious base while others are just fucking around. And before someone gives the info on my avg rating, who the fuck cares. Yes I have an overall negative rating, while in the same aspect some of my post are as good as a 1.9 rating. Does that mean that I don't try to post quality stuff, NO. I means that some of my posts are viewed by poeple that have a different sense of humor than I. And this is fine, if you don't find it funny, give me the -2, I don't care, I found it funny and in the end thats all I really give a shit about. More on the IP block, the adresses that were blocked was the corporate, which resulted in none of the branches computers to log on no matter what location, and our home IP, which knocked out the four computers at the house. Yes, Yes, I know fingerbang, and yes I +2 his post, why, because I can if I want, isnt that great. And he does +2 my post, but not all the time, thats a courteousy of knowing people, you ge the benefit of doubt. It works the same when your in the "in-crowd," I have seen some real crap written by "respectful" users, but they get praised, and why, because they know other users, it's a benefit, it's life.
On the post that was the fault of the banning (fingerbangs post about ramapage car sex) it was said that he used multiple accounts to review his on post. Bart had said the number was 5. And yes there were 5 different users with the same IP that reviewed his post of the same day. I was one, fingerbang was another. But look at the reviews, one can easily tell a different person was writting these. If one wants to take a closer look, look at the times fingerbang reviewed other post and the times the banning post was reviewed. One would have to be very fast with an unheard of broadband to post and review at such a speed. And the computers we have at work are slowing than my ball sack thawing out after doing the eskimo dip.
A warning, i think that is what sould have been done, I think bart acted to hasty without all the facts. How can a warning be done? Fucking simple, Bart has all our email addresses, all he has to do is email us telling us what we were doing wrong, or at least inquiry about why we were doing what we were doing. If the act is kept up, then if a ban must be placed, why not try a temporary ban, but with a simple courteousey of posted a notice to all of uber who got banned, why they were banned, so as someone else will not make the same mistake. I think that is a simple request.

I seriously think this is one of the worst arguments ever. I just woke up, so it could be grogginess, but I'm pretty sure I'm right, like always.
For starters, people like Bart because he actually does kick ass. I think his posts are definitely some of the best, and people tend to agree. People "revere" him because they think he's entertaining, or a nice guy, whatever. There's no need to kiss his ass, because, in fact, he's quite far from controlling. You are making invalid and asinine claims; I can't recall a time when Bart ever banned someone because they insulted him. He allows a lot of worthless crap to remain on this website, and in doing so demonstrates that he values free speech. And yes, I said "allows" and "worthless." This site is ultimately monitored by Bart Cilfone, and thank God, because otherwise it wouldn't be WORTH my time. There are indeed some things posted here that have absolutely no worth. Sure, it's a matter of opinion, but the idea that murdering innocent victims is wrong is also an opinion.
Bart bans certain users because they become fucking annoying as hell. No one benefits from three posts titled "suck this dildo fat motherfuckers" and containing very little to no text. It's not artistic, it's not a valuable argument, it's just plain crap. If you don't like the fact that Bart exercises some degree of authority in deciding who stays or goes, however mild that degree may be, find a forum monitored by an android.
Some people do tend to fall into the herd mentality, and would probably prefer that Ubersite be composed of similar personalities. But that isn't true for everyone, or necessarily even most, on this site. And if that's something that Bart wants, he certainly doesn't show it through the way he manages Ubersite. There are always going to be closed-minded people who can't think outside the box, there are always going to be people who derive their identities from the groups in which they are included, and there are always going to be cliques.
Ubersite may not be full of people with the mentalities you'd prefer, and Bart may not be running this website according to your approval, but I'm content with how things are working, and I don't see the need to protest. Of course, that's just my opinion. And since this website shouldn't be policed by opinion, I suppose it follows that there is no need to take yours into consideration.

i don't know if this has already been suggested, but perhaps it would be more civilised if bart was to give people a warning prior to banning them.
ie, bart could post a warning saying "you have been doing xyz. I don't like xyz for these reasons. Please stop, or I will have to ban you". Given that there are no published rules for ubersite, this would seem a fairer way of doing things.
btw, and i doubt this question will get a serious answer from anyone, why was cindy's account closed?

This post wasn't made with the sole intention of slandering you or this site. It was more of an observation of how certain individuals on this site will turn on their own self professed ideals at the drop of a hat, the moment that someone, (manifested in the form of fingerbang in this case) represents the negative repercussions inherent in those ideals.
Is it not possible that the multiple users issue was a misunderstanding on your behalf, since his office network does have the same I.P address?
Even if this were not the case, I find it somewhat difficult to believe that you would ban somebody solely on the grounds that he/she were using multiple accounts. This was not a matter of your control conflicting with theirs, it was matter of somebody doing something that this site does NOT prohibit, and your subsequent banning with no warning, announcement, or message to the rest of the users. This leads to the conclusion that you banned him because he was being a complete, and total asshole to you.
This is further fortified by the conditions that surrounded the last high profile banning. DDT did nothing to deserve being banned, except insult people, and even then he was not a third as vehement in his propaganda, as say, Loren. This leads to the conclusion that you folded like a deck of cards under pressure from Razor, and several other people on the most viewed authors list that were gunning for his removal from the site.
Therefore, we see how Ubersite is not an autonomous website, because it is subject to your opinions, which in turn is subject to the opinion of the reigning clique.
I found it strange not only that you would ban him for what he did, but that you would not so much as even give a warning, or any kind of message that the same thing will happen if other people do the same thing. I also find it strange that you combed through his i.p address records, drew some rushed conclusions, and banned him for it. All the while about a hundred other users have or have had alternate accounts.
Then, we see the pack begin its formation. People rushed to your side and spouted off heavy praise for your decision, despite it being a most discrete endeavor on your part. If he had not found a way to post the message telling about his banning, I highly doubt that you would have said a single word about it for the rest of the site's existence.
This is where the parallel began to form to the patriot act or the united states government, as highly exaggerated and out of context that it may seem. This is because they do have the right to "disapp
