Why are we told all of our lives that skin color is of absolutely no significance in determining the value or potential of someone only to be thorougly dissapointed by the truth later in life.
It begins most notably with college. You get higher SAT scores and have a better average and are involved in more clubs than say a Puerto Rican or Black kid in your class. Yet because of the color of their skin, they are given a more favorable chance for admission. Why is this? What does this accomplish? Some may say the tests are skewed, that they are made by white people and are culturally biased. Probably true. I'd be willing to wager that poor people don't contribute at all to the designing the test, so how can poor people be expected to do well? Why do we choose skin color or "ethnicity" as opposed to socioeconomic background when evaluating people. Rich kids, go to better schools and have more opportunities that poor people, so obviously they would do better on such standardized tests. Why not adjust application points based on this difference?
Additionally, what percentage of the black population graduates from H.S. AND takes the SAT or ACT or some other college entrance exam? Lets say at most 10%, that's fair. What is accomplished by giving the top ten percent of educated blacks an easier pathway to higher education? It certainly doesn't boost confidence; I went to college with a lot of people who wouldn't have been there if my alma mater didn't value diversity so much. I know this because they were required to take pre-college classes and do well in order to begin in the fall. There are similar programs at every school. What about the minorities who do deserve to be there. Don't you think they resent the stigma attached to them, i.e. they wouldn't be there if they weren't a minority? Are we that certain that minorities would make up a low proportion in higher education if we didn't give them a hefty boost? (A 1600 SAT score gets you 9 points out of 100 on a michigan application, being a minority gives you 20).
Also, I'm so sick and goddamn tired of hearing about the benefits of diversity. What the fuck difference in culture or anything of importance does the black kid in my small town have that is so valuable as to overlook all previous education and testing requirements in favor of his "ethnic wisdom"? He comes from the same shitty town I do, why don't we both get an advantage, because of my skin color? Wow MLK jr is rolling in his grave. I don't want to hear about black people need to be given opportunities now that they didn't have during slavery and pre civil rights era. Bullshit. Anyone hard working can achieve in this country. What if you can't do well in school because you are working two full time jobs while supporting your little brother so your mom can work a night job and you don't have any time to study. Guess what? If we started giving people a point bonus on applications based on socioeconomic background, more minorities would benefit, due to the fact that they compose a disproportionate amount of lower class people. And it would benefit all poorer, therefore ACTUALLY disadvantaged people.
The focus needs to be on the children that don't make it to the point where the start reaping benefits for their skin color. The solution needs to affect the source of the problem, not the tip of the iceberg.

I agree totally. I have been bitching about this for years. I don't think Race is a factor this day in age.
The Black people haven t been oppressed for 50 Years. And the mexicans can't speek english and that isn't white people's problem.
if any one should complain it is the jews, who hasn't picked on them.

Simplistic. But a good effort.
Next time, if you're going to talk about an issue like this have facts and figures to back up your claims. Research never hurts either.

Don't worry. Soon we'll all have "peak oil" to worry about and we'll forget about this.
