I swear I have a point as to why this is directed towards Australians, allow me to blather on first...
I am currently at some kind of turning point in my life right now. I guess you could say that I am finally 'growing up.' For the past year I have been happily dating my boyfriend Mike, we've been your average 'Air Force couple.' However, due to downsizing of the Air Force and Mike's possession of an Article 15, he is being discharged from the military. He is planning on moving back home for a month or so before finding a civilian job, and I will finish up my last 2 years of enlistment. Since we are both pretty serious about building a future together, we converse about anything and everything that could help us have a hearty future, even if we must sacrifice fun and frivolous spending now... our greatest concerns are mostly education and money matters. I know for a fact that this is the man that I want to build a future with, I want to be a team with him, have a successful career and a nice nest egg, and as corny as it may sound, he is the person I want to grow old with.
While I am finishing up my enlistment, he is going to work in Iraq under a government contract for a year, earning $90 minimum a year. After we both are done with our commitments, we are planning on possibly moving to Australia together.
I have never been to Australia before, neither has he, but it's been a dream of his for quite some time. I would like to know from any Australian resident or even anyone who has traveled in the area, what their honest opinion of it is. Would this go along with our plans for the future? How is the job market? What are the colleges like? How is the area? Do you need to claim residency to live in the country? Where is a good area/town to live? Any useful advice!
I'm not sure if there are many Australian ubers, but any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

I wasnt going to bag any other aussie cities....so ill describe the country in general
Would this go along with our plans for the future? Only you can decide that
How is the job market? At the moment, it really depends what industry you are in.....if you guys are in the defence force, you may be able to get in here.....we have the best SAS force in the world if you hope to get that far
What are the colleges like? Great....some of the best....in all fields...
How is the area? Im from Brisbane originally, and its a great place to live....not as big as Sydney, sure, but it still has plenty to do. Clubs, restaurants, entertainment, same with Gold and Sunshine coast. Queensland would have some of, if not, the best beaches in Australia, and we are home to the Great Barrier Reef. Ive been to Sydney when I was younger and it was good at the time, plenty of things to do. I havent been there since so I can't tell you what clubbing is like etc.
Do you need to claim residency to live in the country? I think so.
Where is a good area/town to live? Depends what your looking for

I have seen a lot of the world and love travelling but I really do think Australia is the best place to live. The people are friendly, it's beautiful and jobs really aren't hard to get. I would also suggest living in Sydney. Northern Sydney is a really nice area, close to the city, beaches and lots of public transport.. St Leonards,Artarmon,North Sydney,Milsons Point areas.

Dammit, why is everyone neglecting Perth? Possibly because no one lives there... But hey, it's nice here. We have some of the most kick ass beaches in the world. Sure Perth isn't as big as Sydney or Melbourne, but that can be a good thing. From what I know, Perth would have the cheapest houses compared to the other states (if you're looking to buy).
Ok, I suppose everyone is going to try to talk up their particular state, so I'd say the best way to find out what it's like would be to visit them. Well, probably not Northern Territory, I don't think there's really much there.
Oh and just because 90% of the country or whatever that number was lives in the east, doesn't make it better. Just makes it better advertised.

the northern beaches in sydney is among the best places in the world to live. its more expensive than pretty much anywhere else in sydney (except for the vaucluse, double bay area), but it is quieter, and has the best beaches in a city known for its beaches. everywhere in australia is nice to visit, but this area is the best to live in - ive lived here all my life, and i wouldnt ever live anywhere else in sydney (except for possibly the inner-city, and even then, id be thinking of manly)...

MaxwellSmart is full of shit.
Australia hasn't had an unemployment problem in almost a decade. The official unemployment rate is 5.9%, America's is 6.0% [FYI these are among the lowest in the developed world] ...
Australia has a higher quality of life than America [according to U.N. human development index] although the gross domestic product per capita is lower... but the cost of living is cheaper so it evens out.
Jobs are good in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. The only cities worth living in if you're from a large city in America are Melbourne and Sydney... if you don't mind smaller cities then you have Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and possibly Newcastle. Stick to the eastern seaboard... 90% of the population lives along it - there's a reason for that: the rest of the country is a hole.
Good beaches, good lifestyle... living in inner-city Sydney can be a rat race... some of the slums are worse than L.A. but if your combined income is as much as you say it is [90k for him 60k for you i'm guessing?] then there's no problem in finding a good place in a good suburb. Good transport, low crime [in the good areas], stable economy... and by the way it's easy for Americans to get jobs... if you were a non-english speaking Indian immigrant you might have some trouble, but even then you'd get a job if you really worked at it.
Entertainment is shit in all cities except for Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. The Gold Coast has some good nightclubs but that's about it. There would be a bit of a culture shock moving here from America... but that's what you're after I guess. I like Australia... but I can't see myself living here for my entire life. To explain that I guess I'd have to say that like many countries around the world, Australia revolves around America... and that frustrates me every once in a while [I think I may end up moving to America one of these days], but overall it's a great place to live and I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy it.

Shay, Australians aren't America haters, many of us disagree with the government, but we all hate you.
I would suggest Sydney or Melbourne because they are two international cities which contain about half the country's population.
But you really just need to go have a look for yourself.

SHAY: Not all Australian Uberers are American haters.
CASSIE: Moving to Australia could be a little tough for you. I haven't lived there since 1999 (I'm originally from Adelaide), but last thing I remember, they would only grant you a visa for a maximum stay of 6 months before you had to renew. Getting jobs there as foreigners could be difficult. Because Australia doesn't have enough jobs for it's own populaition, immigration laws favor locals. If you can line up a job before you move there, it will make it easier to get a working visa. If you just move there and try to get a job, you could be in for some difficult times. That being said, it's a great place to live.

bit of a bad time to post this one due to time zones.
The best places to live in Australia are Sydney and Melbourne. Everywhere else is pretty dull if you're younger than 50. Australia has a good economy, you won't be earning 90K but it doesn't matter as the standard of living is very high. The residency works on a points system, based on your country, background, age, job, and ~race. Education is one of the best in the world. People are friendly although a bit small-minded outside of cities.
I would recommend living near Manly beach in Sydney.

The coolest thing about Australia is that when you flush the toilet, it swirls down the drain in the opposite direction. Plus you can eat kangaroo there.

Also, if you are planning on moving from US to Australia, now is the worst time you could possibly do it. Two year ago you would have gotten twice as many AUD as you exchange USD, now you will be lucky to get 1.30AUD for each USD

yes, that would be $90,000...
The reason I'm asking on the site is because I could go to just about any other 'tourist' site, but it would all say the same crap. I want an honest opinion from someone who lives there and knows the area. Yes I am an american, hate on!

The Australian Ubers on this site suck, because they're all American haters. Shouldn't you research all of that stuff yourself online? Shouldn't you visit there before actually moving there? Just a thought. I hope you meant your boyfriend is making a minimum of $90,000 a year, and not $90.00 a year...
