UberAussies, wat do ya reckon?
You gotta hand it to Johnny Howard, he knows how to cover his ass. To call him a shrewd politician would be a huge understatement.
Everyone agrees that the evidence given and the motives for going to war with iraq was bogus and exagerated. How could Howard allow us to go to war on such bullshit? well it was a golden opportunity for Australia to make a shitload of cash, and the prospect of Howard coming out unscathed in terms of public standing was pretty good. And Austrlia's image remains intact.
Sending only the SAS into Iraq garuantees that wateva civilian casualties or wat have you that took place will stay suppressed. Truth is, no one will ever find out what our troops really did over there but you can pretty much bet it was all covert ops type stuff, destroying strictly military installations etc. and not really going in gung ho rambo style shooting civilians (a la the US). Now i know its a reality of war that there is such a thing as collateral damage and freidnly fire, im just saying that from a PR perspective it aint so good. So from that point of view our troops did a good job without killing any civilians. Win win situation for us there.
In addition to that, Australia will make a great deal of money through the reconstruction contracts because we were part of the coalition of the willing. Yay again, and also following those contracts, because we're such good mates with the yanks, they allowed us this good (not great) but pretty darn good free trade agreement thus generating even more moola for us (add to this the trade agreements with China and we are totally rolling in it). It would be a pretty safe bet to say that our economy is going to stay in great shape for the next couple of years barring some unforseen financial disaster.
So now most of the shit has blown over and further scrutiny over the case for war intensifies you would think howard would be in the shits BUT because he based his decision to go to war on the intelligence from the US and Britain, he can pretty much say "well at the time all the evidence we received pointed to X, if the yanks or the poms sexed up the evidence thats their fault not ours, the evidence was officially certified and thus would be reasonable to be interpreted as truth, if anything unkosher was in the reports then well, we were misled." And although there were heaps of other agencies including our own intelligence agencies cranking up about how the justifications were bullshit at the time, Howard can pretty much say that these agencies are too small to know what their talking about and are not basing their stories on as extensive a body of evidence presented by the US and Britain. Again, this is total bullshit but in terms of official legal politico-speak it makes perfect sense, and besides, everything is being investigated now anyway, if the findings prove that the evidence was bogus, again - not our fault. Whether or not the people will buy it is a different story, but no matter how you look at it, Australia as a nation will reap big benefits from this whole debacle. We can only hope that Bush and the US' current administration and possibly Tony Blair et al. get a big kik in the ass and rightly so, however it looks as though the land of Oz will come out of this unscathed and a whole lot richer. They should call him Howard the bullet-dodger.
He's a prick but you gotta admire his work.

yes i realise that my grammar and spelling was a little off, and that my terminology was extremely un PC but fuk it, this was a stream-of-conciousness rant not some work of hemmingway.
i agree we're all a bunch of apathetic cunts, especially when it comes to the Iraq mess, but our apathy has been bolstered by the huge economic benefits we have gained throughout. Majority of the people here have been pacified by the rise in imported consumer goods and higher incomes.

I kind of agree with you on some points but the main reasons that Little Johnny has come out looking so good is:
Nobody (in Austrlia) but the Politicians and a few peacenik have beens actually care about the Iraq war now.
Every one KNOWS politicians lie so there are no surprises there.
And finally:
We are a totally apathetic useless bunch of bastards who only vote because the law says we have to. Therefore the only thing that matters is when the footy is gonna start and when is Shane Warne going to put his stupid foot in it again.
