I've been on Ubersite for a long time.

I've seen many changes, I've seen people come and go, I've seen cliques form and disintegrate, I've seen a lot of changes to the format. When I first got here, 5000 hits was enough to get your ass on the Most Viewed Author's list. When I first got here, the "search" function didn't exist, at least not the way it does now.

I go back a long fucking way.

And you know what that means?

Absolutely nothing. The fact that I have XXXXXX hits that get a XXX rating has absolutely no bearing on the quality of each of my posts.

"But wait a second cats, you're on the MVA! Everything you post must be at least decent!"

Wrong. Look at my first post. "The whole religion distorting good ideas thing." It's fucking atrocious. I would link to it but too damn lazy.

Everyone on this site makes shitty posts. But lately, I've detected a pattern. A sickening, vomit inducing trend. Let's see if we share a common experience:

Ubersite person A makes a post.

Ubersite person B slaps it with a -2.

Ubersite person A responds, but DOES NOT attack the validity of person B's claim, he does not question the logic behind his response, he doesn't even call him a good reason for abortion. What does he do?

He does this:

"User id: 236
Registered on or around: 2002-10-10 21:47:58
# Messages posted: 68
# Reviews written: 1360
# Times these posts have been reviewed : 1719
# Hits: 89958
Average rating of all messages: 0.87

See? I'm better than you!"

This is so stupid and utterly disgusting that it almost negates the cooler aspects of the feature. I almost wish Bart wouldn't have made it, but then again I only have a .87 rating so what do I know?

I'm sure someone with a 1.21 rating has a better point of view.

Another thing. No one cares what your ID number is so shut the fuck up about it.

In conclusion, if you're one of those people who thinks that having a higher rating lends strength to your argument, masturbate with a cheese grater and kill yourself, or at least quit paying your Netzero bills.

Another thing i'd like to say on behalf of newbies, I have been layed off from my job and have been actually reading uber for months. Since i have so much free time now i may read for hours and hours on a given day. I only just recently even created a user name and started reviewing, but i am not new in terms of how much i have read here. Seems everytime i want to post about something i search and find something similar has been done so i scrap my thoughts and wait for something else to inspire me. When a site has grown to this size its hard not to mistakenly do something that has been touched on before. Also i fully agree with the fact that you shouldn't have to post to be able to determine what is quality and what sucks. I know a regular on here(the one who lead me here ) and he often asks my opinion before he posts and hes a great writer so i must not be that stupid and illiterate after all. Give the non-idiotic newbies some slack please

Ignore my last comment... something is fucked up.

Your comment from August 2002 is on a post that was written in February 2003.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN - PAS IS A TIME TRAVELER FROM THE FUTURE!!

There must have been some small window of time where the clock on the server was way off and you must have posted that comment within that time window. Weird.

However, user ids are still generated sequentially.

PAS - http://www.ubersite.com/m/5193#8415

That's your first ever comment on the site.

There is a small problem with some of the registration dates. Due to a silly technical issue, the registration dates for anybody with a user id less than 3252 are not necessarily accurate. For those users, the registration date is actually the first activity date, meaning the date of your first comment / post.

User ids are guaranteed to be handed out sequentially, so catscradle did in fact sign up before you. However, he must not have posted or commented on anything until well after you registered.

The extreme example here is jeano: http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/message_get.cgi?user_id=3

He's a good friend of mine who signed up very early on but never posted anything until just a few months ago. The result is that his reported registration date is all whacked.

Justin you would be right if the easiest way to get plus twos on this site was not to mention the name of other authors on the site in a story that is decently written, or to write a humorous story that involves sex or poop or throwing up. The truth is that I have seen well written discussions of things get low numbers, and I have seen utter garbage like Joe Averages attempt to emulate the cyberporn he reads get lots of plus twos. So no...Well maybe I will have to disagree with myself and say the masses love garbage. For the love of God the milkshake song was in the top 10 for a while, America is full of idiots.

I agree with Razor.
------------------

It's a full circle, baby.

Usually when someone manages to get an overall negative rating after posting several times, it's usually 100 percent correct. If someone calls my writing a piece of crap, and I look at their posts and they have one line about ''hitler rulezz!'', I'm going to point this out.

It would be different if I were arguing from a reader's point of view about this, but arguing from a writer's point of view, I'm going to point out their rating if it's shit. It's basically saying to them, ''Hey average joe, your rating sucks, therefore your opinion does not matter to me. Write something worthwhile and then I'll hold your opinion credible''.

This is UBERSITE, you have to PROVE yourself to the masses. There are some exceptions like firefly, but she's not some newbie cunt running around throwing out -2's other than the reason that they're a dumbass. If you post decent posts, your opinion matters more on this site. That's my opinion and I'm sure others believe the same.

loki says "if i think their posts are crap" i discount what they said

this is (partially at least) reasonable.

but loki, how do you determine if their posts are crap? do you rely on the ratings of others, or do you see for yourself?

i've read many excellent posts (in my humble view as a lecturer in english literature) that have very low ratings. eg http://www.ubersite.com/m/17077 (trevor's comical post about breast milk and an office dalliance)

That's bullshit loki. I've never published a single novel (or a single anything for that matter) but I still think I have the right to think that 'Great Expectations' is a piece of shit. Not from a writer's point of view, but from a reader's point of view. You don't have to be a 'good poster' (which is a subjective judgement anyway) to appreciate good posting just like you don't need to be a good football player to make judgments about football players. Or do you disagree?

Cats, Im the chick who has been posting all the sexual profanity on your stuff recently. I named myself ImYours... yup, you should check those out of you still havent.

Anyways, I just dont get what all the excitement is! Why is everyone so wrapped up with ratings??? I mean, this is supposed to be a place to bitch and complain about whatever you want, or make jokes and give people something to read while they are... you guessed it... BORED AT WORK! This is NOT A TALENT SHOW!!! And besides, I think all of us would agree that most of the people on Uber and in the entire world for that matter are almost always either JEALOUS of our ability, IGNORANT and dont get our point, PLASTIC and get offended, or just plain STUPID and dont understand. So if we usually bitch about people and the way they have all these flaws that would basically make their opinions count for horse shit, why the fuck are we so wound up about who go what???

My opinion??? Catscradle is the funniest and most talented author I have read in a while. I love his shit, and Im NEVER SO LAZY that I post a 0 on any of his shit. I think everyone is giving in to the manipulation that posts are meant to have over us... break the cycle!!!

In closing, I still want to fuck Cats brains out, and since this is a new post, Im hoping he will respond... since he never did to any of his other stuff.

Still wanting you,
-Naomi

This isn't about whether or not bad ratings make a person bad Razor, this is about whether or not good ratings overall automatically predicate the quality of the post in particular. They don't, and some act as if they do, an act which I have been so bold and so arrogant to declare as folly.

Sideburns is right.

The ratings are relevant.

I agree that when you're reading a NEW POST, you should be judging that post on the quality of the post itself.

However, when you're talking about an argument within the replies, or responding to criticism, then I think it does become relevant.

Example:

Someone -2s one of my posts. I don't know who they are. I click on User Info. I look at the bottom and see they have been here for a month and a half, and have an average rating of -0.83 over their lifetime.

At that point I feel that I can safely ignore what they are saying. It takes real effort or idiocy to get a rating that consistently negative.

the point of posting someones stats isnt to say you're better than them (though some people say that), they point is to make people aware that the poster is a shit-tossing-monkey-attention-whore-12-year-old-with-nothing-better-to-do-than-annoy-us asswipe. so it only works if the user has anaverage of -2.00 or if all his posts are below -1.00 or something.

There is definitely more name calling without valid reasons for a -2 than there is positive criticism explaining the bad parts of a post with suggestions as to what would make it better. I think that if you're going to give a -1 or -2, then you should say what exactly was bad and or suggest what needs to be there to make it better. No wonder why there's so much shit on Über, because the people that make bad shit are not given an actual reason their post sucks besides just being told to jump off a cliff or something in regards to that.

"High ratings reflect popularity just as much if not more than content."

While this may be true in some cases, it's not true in all.

I'm pretty much an invisible man around here, but reviewers have been surprisingly kind to me.

I like my stats. I have an enormous ego that requires constant stroking, and Ubersite gives me that. What I do NOT do is rub other poster's noses in my own numbers. That is dishonorable. If someone wants to see my numbers, they can look for themselves.

But I like the fact that they CAN look at them.

In all honesty, popularity DOES count for the most-part on this site. Whether you like it or not, if you have a familiar name, you're going to get more hits and higher ratings.

"BTW - I printed out your Dear Dad post and wiped my ass with it. It was quite scratchy, to say the least."

Ratings don't qualify posts - people act as though they do. It's been said before, and it's been preached to death before, but I shall reiterate it once more: High ratings reflect popularity just as much if not more than content. Look at Drink_DDT's ratings now compared to when he first started here- look at MickGinny's - your rating and your ability do not correlate on this site and I wanted to make the point that no one cares how many hits you have or how much people like you. All that matters here is what have you written NOW and is it worth the 45 seconds of my time that it takes to read it. I think I did - now get that cheesegrater Sideburns, and start whacking.

People are going to keep calling each other out on their ratings. It's competition. Even on a small website competition will always exist. Especially on a male dominated website. People have their own opinions and you're welcome to yours, but if Average_Joe comes along and -2s my post and questions my writing ability, I'm going to say something. When I feel that this person isn't worth the effort of a whitty retort, I'll just copy/paste his user info.

I'm sure when someone copy and pastes the user info of another person, they're not doing it to say ''I'm better than you''. They're doing it to say ''I write better than you''. I've done this on more than one occasion.

Someone has an overall negative rating for a reason. If Average Joe comes along, posts pure crap and gets a string of negative twos, then reviews a very good post from someone and gives them a -2, that person has every right to call him out on his average rating. It's like saying ''Hey, bud, I'm a better poster than you. Your -2 doesn't phase me.''

After all, mama always said to shake them haters off.

Disagree with me, you have every right to. Of course the majority of Uberers agree with this post, but I'm not going to play 'follow the lemmings'.

It's just a posting forum, if something on here *honestly* bothers you enough to write a post about it, I think it's time to take an Uber break.

Yours truly,

-Sideburns

Meant to +2 this.

But it's because I agree, not because of your user id or the fact that you're on the MVA list.

I haven't been at Uber that long, but the thing that pisses me off the most is the petty little cliques. Yeah, okay... My writing is shit and I get shitty reviews for it, but when someone with User ID#<1000 posts a piece of pig shit they get +2's out the ass. Aparently all I have to do to make the quality of my writing better is to suck the cock of someone in the Uber cool kid clique thereby making me one of the "in" crowd.

It's just statistics. It's supposed to be informative. In theory, if someone sucks ass, it will be reflected in those numbers. While the numbers could be distorted in the short term, on a large enough timeline, they seem to be pretty much dead on.

I guess people always need to find some bogus reason to claim that they're better than someone else. More hits, higher rating, more money, faster car, bigger dick, it's all just something to do to waste time until you die and get thrown into a hole in the ground along with everyone else. Even then, some jackass has to build a giant mausoleum to distinguish himself from the petty commoners.

In conclusion, you all suck. Except catscradle.

I agree with you. A lot of the copying and pasting stats originated from one well known member, and it got a good response. So others decided to try it to boost their popularity. Its that little damned thing called attention that everyone wants. Everyone wants to feel important.

As for the rating of posts, it is hard to get accepted here. All the old farts here know each other and respect each other. They are all friends, and they all look out for each other. Therefore, they are less harsh to each other. But, they also rate fairly from what I've seen on my posts. I can go through and re-read and see that what I wrote truely blew donkey balls. It's a fact.

Whats with the automatic inclination to +2 a MVA's post? What happened to good 'ol 0 if you just want to say something.

You do have a point cats, but your point is not the kicker of all ass.

HAHAHA I have to admit you definatly have a point. What is the big deal about how many hits you have and so on. Did someone at one point say if you have the highest number, your going going to be Queen of the posts or someone promised to send you a check for a million dollars? Its a website people! A place where you can write what you think. In most cases you never have to talk to anyone and with a flick of the power button on you tower, everyone that you think is a moron goes away. Of course someone is going to make a comment because I wrote this. Guess what? I hope they do. Seriously I enjoy the hell out of reading this stuff.

i agree with you. now this could do with the fact that i have a realitvely low average rating (though decent) and often time people with less of something desire equality (i honestly don't know if that's why i agree). but, i do like the feature to see the average rating and so on and so forth.

i haven't been on uber all that long, but i would say that i'm somewhat of a veteran and i even find myself nostalgic for the days when uber was different when i first came here. back then it seemed so much less crowded which actually depresses me somewhat (i emphasize somehwat, i'm not emotionally unbalanced over a website). but that's the way of life, right?

also though, i feel some resentment towards ubersite. the reasoning behind this is its addictive nature. i've been considering writing a post called UberCrack dealing with that topic. i've held back b/c i couldn't think of making a decent length post with well thought substance and to be honest i lack confidence in the writing i post here, becaue honestly people, Uberusers can be extrememly harsh.

now i feel as if i've gone on TOO much of a tangent and maybe i will just write UberCrack or maybe i'll stick to being a pussy, whatever i decide, my longwinded irrelevent rant on this post will remain none the less.

that's right, i went there.

heh yeah. I also like the assholes. they're the ones that review and write something really shitty like, "Kill yourself. NOW!"

Accidental meetings in real life would be great. It would be nice to see one of these:

"Hi there, so you are my new manager?"

"Sure am!"

"Do you mind the use of our computers for personal reasons from time to time?"

"Nah, I'm pretty laid back. I check my e-mail and hop on ubersite when it's slow. Feel free to do the same."

"Yeah, I post on ubersite too!"

"Oh yeah, whats your handle?"

"Donkeypunch! You read my stuff?!"

"Yeah, I did. You uhh, you told me you hope me and my kids die in a car fire..."

"Uhh... I meant my handle is donkeyLunch! yeah I know.. that Donkeypunch is an asshole man..."

heheh.

Oh, man, Malone, I motherfucking own you! Not only do I have twice as many hits, but I have a better average rating by .0 something. I know exactly what you're talking about Catscradle, but sometimes user ID and #Hits is a valid argument. Such as when someone just replies to your post with a negative score and one word, usually fucker, asshat, or sucks. Regardless, it does get out of hand, and for the record Malone, I don't motherfucking own you. I just like to think I do. Wait, no, lemme rephrase that. I love your shit and I hope that you like mine too as we are both decent posters who share the same ideals. I would love to see your user ID post.

I agree. I agree because the more I post on here, the more people create posts about me and want me to leave the site. I don't know why, maybe it's because I cut through the bullshit and say my point. Just a theory. It's a funny thing being attacked with every single post you make, but it has never been about my ID number.

So maybe I should change posting tactics and make the next post ALL ABOUT my user ID number and how much ass I kick because of it. Maybe that would get me Uber respect.

Naw.
