I don't fucking believe it - they've fully banned smoking in Ireland. If you're not sure where Ireland is, it's an island to the west of the British mainland.
And they've actually BANNED smoking in public. WTF???!!!!???!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??
What scares me is that England is next........
Do we not have a fucking choice? It's barred in pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants and anywhere else that the public has direct access to. What the fuck kind of mentality is that?
Banned. BANNED!!!! What? What are we - fucking kids? Slap on the wrist by your mum? Go to your room?
Oh yeah, I hear your "non smoker" arguments - and I agree with some of them .
1. Why should I have to inhale your smoke?
True - why the fuck should you.
2. Smoking kills people
It's up to the people - so does drinking - are we gonna ban that next?
I'm SO angry!!!!!
What I cannot fathom, and this is the bit that really pisses me off - why ban it everywhere? It's banned in every single pub club etc. ~Would it not make sense to offer the landlords the opportunity to have a smoke free bar or a smokers bar, leaving the 22% of the population that remain, somewhere to go and fill their lungs with filthy poisonous smoke at their free will? If you're a non smoker and you don't want to inhale, you will then have the free choice of a smoke free bar.
I'm not ignorant and I DO understand why they're doing it. But what kind of Draconian/socialist/1984 type fucking bullshit is BANNING it?
How fucking DARE the government who WE vote for make such a bold anti-democracy statement?
They said that something around 78% of people would like a ban on smoking in England. I bet a pound against a penny that the same 78% would have agreed to segregated smoking areas or pubs.
I'm absolutely FUCKING SEETHING about this.

Where I am you can smoke pretty much wherever and whenever you want, with exceptions. The University I go to school at doesn't allow it, but I don't mind because there are heated outdoor smoking areas. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll just walk down the hall at any given building to the staircase. The best was a hotel i stayed at where there was a restaurant that was non-smoking, and a comfortable bar/lounge that allowed smoking where you could still eat supper and breakfast. You could still be served alcohol in the restaurant. We need compromise, not restrictions. If the non-smokers bitch about this than they can kiss my ass. There aren't many up here and oppressive people are generally unwelcome.

Bloody smokers ...don't you just hate there arrogance.
Typical tory type getting the socialist slur in...even though it has nothing to do with it.
Its great not having to breath in the smoke and have to wash your clothes each time you leave the pub.
Now don't get me wrong I don't mind people taking drugs just so long as it does not affect me my clothes or my health. now if i was sat in a boozer and a junkie wanted to inject some smack ..fine it does not effect me ..or a raver dropping an E or having a line of charles. But the smoking tobacco is such an anti social drug effecting everyone not just the drug addicted smoker.
The sooner it happens in the UK the better.

The ban still only applies to offices, public buildings like pubs and clubs and things like theaters etc.
You can smoke all you like in private and on the streets, parks, beaches etc.

I think we should orgonize a world wide smoke off! Then we'll go home and flood STAND.COM with e-mails! So you can advertise how bad smoking is, but you're not allowed to advertise it as a product? That makes sense! It's called censorship. The last time people were banned from speaking like in public, it was by Nazi's!

That's the type of tyranny I'd expect from a socialist regime. I think they did the same thing in New York City. It's pitiful, the oppression that is levied in the name of freedom.

Don't sweat it too much. Smoking has been banned from bars and restaurants where I live for quite sometime now and to be honest with you I kind of enjoy it. I'm a smoker myself and I appreciate going into a restaurant or bar and not being bombarded with a smoke cloud. I find that I smoke a little less having to go outside.

I broke my ankle playing football a couple of years ago and a nurse said 'people like you a drain on the NHS' how wrong is that?
she must have been 20 stone as well the fat bitch. now that is a strain on the NHS.

Is there socialized medical care in ireland? If so then the nonpuffers are paying the cost for puffers. I agree that banning smoking is stupid. Just cut off medical benefits, when people get sick from it they will die quickly, problem solved.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice point but check this.....
The price of a typical pack of 20 cigarettes sold in the UK is £4.39 UK duty paid, of which tax accounts for £3.46 or 79%. This compares with £3.12 in 1997 of which tax was £2.44 (78%).
The government in the UK makes a whopping amount of tax on cigarettes which could be used to educate or fund the health service. But where do you draw the line my friend? Should we stop alcohol related medical care too, including personal accidents/ car accidents / violence caused by drinking/alcohol related health issues?
I don't know the solution, but banning ain't it.

The only people exploited at titty bars are the men who go there. I should know!
I see what you are getting at and I am a non smoker myself and it doesn't particluary arse me in pubs but it WAS nice in NY and if my local pubs went non smoking I would welcome it. At the same time I do believe in freedom of choice so how about the majority of pubs are non smoking but smokers can go to the odd smoking pub should they choose to do so.
Isn't that the same thing? Non smokers are after all the majority.

It has been that way here in California for at least 8 or 9 years now. There is no such thing as smoking & non-smoking sections in a restraunt here. Can't smoke in clubs, pubs, pool halls, or any other public establishment. And get this...Last week the city of Santa Monica which is a suburb of Los Angeles banned smoking on the beach!
I don't smake anymore, but I did when the ban went into effect. I was equally pissed. Funny thing you sort of get used to it. It deosn't seem like you ever would, but you do.

it's not the point though is it.
the point is all the smoke free bars will be shit becasue no-one will want to force thier mates to go to a non smoking pub hence divisions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You're missing the point again tho Apollo - give people the choice - don't force your opinions on them. I'd bet a lot of cash that in the UK, many nn smokers(not all, but many) would still go to smokers bars. How many people do you know that don't smoke except when they're full of 'e' or coke or beer. Most of my bloody mates, that's who. It'll be proved(as it has been in the U.S.) that revenues will drop in bars/nightclubs etc. Then who Suffers? I'm not saying FORCE people, just give 'em the choice. Non drinkers have the choice to go to a coffee bar to drink non-alcoholic drinks without being hassled by drunken fools, but some teetollers still go to pubs because of the social thing. I guarantee that the same would apply to some, but not all, non smokers. It's all about freedom of choice. I don't like titty-bars and they're responsible for some pretty hardcore exploitation - I don't want them closed down though - let people choose.

+2 for the point. My local will never be the same if I can't have a cigarette with my pint.
-1 for excessive use of the word "fuck". There's no need. I know you're angry, but there are other ways...

Fuck it - read my last couple of posts - I am articulate, but in my opinion it's disgraceful and the excessive use of profanity merely serves as a vehicle to express my profound unhappiness.

It is stupid. You're right, don't forget to ban alcohol.
Oh, and also: unsafe sex, unpopular flags, flag burning, suicide, birth control, gender preference, praying, not praying, gay marriage, soft money contributions, flourides, privacy, shit, fuck, motherfucker, goddamit, let Jesus fuck you, religious broadcasting, under God, stupid people, animal testing, censorship, Nazi websites, specific imports, specific exports, diet drugs, fatty foods, net fishing, cosmetic pesticides, people under that age, people over that age, pornography, right to life, right to death, spam, guns, gas emissions, landmines, affirmative action, people who would get rid of affirmative action, immigration, death, Ubersite,
AND
unfriendly countries that might have entertained the thought of considering the possiblity of someday acquiring the means of performing some sort of test to see if it was at all capable of creating any sort of weapon of mass destruction.
I know, it's a short list of the problems that plague our world and threaten our very existence (maybe tomorrow).
