It started out nicely, after that smack on the ass of course. Its kind of ironic how the first thing every person experiences is a smack on the ass. Being a baby is great; eat, sleep, shit and when you don't get your way, cry as loud as you can and people fall all over themselves to accommodate you.

Damn, times have changed.

Things start to go downhill in elementary school. I spent most of those years being a smart ass, I had a clever reply for anything I was told, I'm sure I was the talk of the teachers lounge, or so I hoped. But elementary school wasn't so bad, recess every few hours, out of school by 3pm, seats with the desks attached.

Junior High introduced me to a new concept: sexual tension and eventually frustration. Of course I had no idea what exactly the words meant at the time, but with hindsight being 20/20, it's pretty obvious. I spent those two years trying to get into the pants of almost every girl in my class, with very predictable results.

High School arrived and I had a better understanding of what I thought I needed to do to get laid: become the Alpha Male. So I set out on a quest to be the coolest guy on campus; I'd backstab, study, lie, work, play sports, add, drop, transfer, pass, fail, drive, walk, ride, and do whatever it took to be "cool". And for all my troubles, I was still the class nerd.

After High School, I went directly to college, and picked a major in a topic I enjoy, I was settling into my groove. I, like so many before me, adopted the infamous "Screw it" mentality. I selected my friends, determined my enemies, and forgot about everyone in between. I did what benefited me, and at the same time scratched the backs of a few others.

Right now I'm less than 60 days away from a Bachelor's and I have a few decisions to make, not so much about getting a job, paying my loans, or moving out of state, but something a bit more basic; who will I become?

Should I revert to my High School ways of doing whatever it takes to get ahead? Certainly that will help me in "Corporate".

Should I stick with my Post-High School indifference? This would probably work best in an Office Space-like, cubicle farm.

Or should I try something different, a completely new direction? Assertive, but kind; sharing but able to say 'no'; educated, but ready learn. Who knows where I'll end up?

I'm getting a clean slate once I get out of here, a new approach might yield better results in the long run, the idea is that years from now, I won't be telling myself how it started out nicely, but how it is still so nice.
