So people have been posting about the most badass and the coolest video games and characters they can think of, but they're forgeting the real classics here. Don't get me wrong, I have a PS2 and a Dreamcast(for what it's worth: i didn't buy it), and the new games are some of the best. But think for a minute.
The new Zelda games that have come out, from Ocarina Of Time and onward, have they really been as great as the originals. The new ones have had increasingly better graphics, allowed you to do more and more, but in the end are they really as good as those original topdown scrollers. Really, the only time anyone ever really got killed in Ocarina of Time was when my brother was pecked to death by chickens, and that only because we were so damn bored with the game we wanted to see how long he could withstand constant barrages of raging chicken death. The game itself was incredibly easy, and all of the secrets were easy to find. Also, the level of immersian in the older games, and the pure amount of stuff was gone. There were about twelve items in the last one, in the first game, they items list took all of three pages to fill, and that's without descriptions.
Zelda's not the only one either. Look for a second at all the Sonic the Hedgehog series games. It's as though Sonic Team has made a pledge to produce games that get progressively worse as time goes on. The first that game out for Dreamcast was a pure waste of time and money, and everyone after that just got worse. The games got less challenging, less immersive, and the whole "Holy Christ I'm moving at the speed of freaking light here" feeling was gone. Alot of Sonic gamers will tell you that the best was the first one, and that they crapped out.
Then came the Mario series. What the hell happened here? On the good side, Mario stayed cool for a long time, and I will give developers the chance to goof every now and then. But C'MON! SuperMario Sunshine: what the hell were they thinking?!! If you've ever wanted to play a video game instead of watching TV to fall asleep, try this game.
So what I really wanted to know was this: what are the best of the classics. Now everyone know that the newer games are some of the best, but the old classics, like Super Mario Bros. Sonic The HedgeHog, and Zelda, are the ones we keep returning to. So review this and tell about the greatest of the classics. Anything you want, whether it's the game, the character, or anything else. What is that one game you keep going back to, because it never stops being fun. There's just that one game that promtped you not to throw out your old system, just so you could keep it.

You want a hard "new" game... Play Ikaruga. Your gamecube/Dreamcast (whichever version you get) will not survive. I broke my DC controller on this hellish pit of addictive torment. Five levels! Five fuckin' levels of teeth grinding, eye flickering, button mashing, timed shooting, hemroid forming, difficulty. Oh does "Treasure" know how to make a fuckin' game!
Guardian Heroes anyone??? huh? HUH? you know what im talking about... true gems this company makes, if it has the name Treasure on it I buy it! Bangai-O, Radiant Silvergun... I mean come on!

I agree that the Zelda games have gotten too easy, but they're still extremely fun.
Also, don't knock on newer games. Some of these games' gameplay is so polished and immersive older systems couldn't replicate the experience, i.e Grand Theft Auto III, Halo, etc.

"Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 and Secret of Mana for the SNES are the best RPGs I've ever played and I still play them!"
That is exactly what I was going to say!

I completely dissagree with some of those remarks, but I miss X-Com dearly. That game was great.

Who knows what happened. Games are too easy today. Beating a game without cheat codes back in the day was something nearly impossible to do. Nowadays, cheat codes are used just for fun and aren't required to get passed a certain part.
Love the picture, I'm killing myself now and leaving a note by my body to have that tombstone.

I don't know if anyone remembers Clash at Demonhead? It was a weird game, made no senes whatsoever, but something about it was addictive as hell.
Best videogame of all time: Planescape: Torment
