Well folks, Round 2, or as I like to call it, the "Please God No More Sappy Stories In Which A Character Not That Well Developed Dies Tragically Or At Least Gets Involved In Domestic Violence Round" is in the bag.
Please read this whole analysis, ESPECIALLY if you are still in the contest, or at the very least the technical section.
Your Vote Counts! We had two ties and three posts decided by ONLY ONE VOTE. Get out there and read everything!
A piece of advice: Loren1 had the biggest slaughter in the first round with a story about someone killing her goody-two-shoes husband, and round two was filled with similar stories... be careful guys! There is no winning formula, and if your posts look like everyone else's people will be sick of it right quick.

Lead Story:
Ladies and gentleman (and transgenders like polyamorousaj), remove your caps and bow low to one of the Ubersite's newest members, JohnGalt41.
As you may remember, poor John got stuck with the "I Love Squattail" title in the first round, and I promised a spot in the tourney to the loser of that contest.
Well, the loser was John, and he snuck in with a sixteen seed, over some complaints and so forth.
Well, I stand by that decision. He took down not only a number one seed, but the odds on favorite to win the whole tourney, JMG114, by a score of 72-28 on the post title "Look What I Found"!
Congratulations John! (by the way, your votes will start counting this round)
Everyone else better watch out for this guy. Oh, and rip up your brackets.

Buzzer Beaters:
There were so many close matches this round people who were seperated by only two votes are not even gonna get mentioned! wtf?!?
Nicole and DDT fought to a tie on "Feathers and Embers", K.M and Fabish did the same on "Let's Try That Again."
Tie goes to the low seed... so congrats to drink_DDT and Fabish!

Russizm lost by one freakin' vote. What a controversy!
I don't see any choice but to accept the votes as they were initially made. I don't want to ever allow the changing of votes under any circumstances, and despite what some people think, 30 seconds is enough time to see a vote tally and write a six word response.
Phinch also squeaked by Papajoe with a score of 34-33. Good luck Phinch, and papa, don't stop writing!
jwlmar10 beat Loren1 by a score of 33-32 on the Pardon Me? post...
We also had a couple of people that got "Al-Gored", they won in total votes, but lost because not every vote counts.
Don't worry, your opponent will likely get caught lying about WMDs and get voted out next round.

The Slaughter House:
Our foaming carnivore award this week goes to Anansie. Congrats for beating Jimbo on the "Writer's Block" post by a score of 63-8!! That's a ratio of 7.875-1 folks. Anansie may have been seeded higher, but how many of you picked her to go past jimbo in your brackets? Craziness! On a personal note, that Writer's Block post was my 2nd favorite of the round.
Honorable Mention:
Razor over GreaterThanBest by a score of 54-13 on the "How Many More?" post. Ratio: 4.154-1. I thought it was funny that a lot of people speculated on who wrote the samurai story, but nobody guessed me.
iddqd over spedmonkey by a score of 76-24 on the "Always Broken" post. Ratio: 3.167-1. Apparently you can write domestic violence as long as you do it really freakin' well.
NOTE: Forfeits and Disqualifications were excluded from the Slaughter House section.

Wha? That's right, he revealed the contestants before the voting was over. Anyone who was paying attention could have picked up on it. Quartermain decided to let the votes do the talking, and T.Chow moves on without being disqualified.
The other errors were submission errors, and everybody reached amicable solutions.
If something occurs which could potentially disqualify someone, their fate lies in the hands of their opponent.

TECHNICAL SECTION / RULE CHANGES / MUST READ!!!!!
Having thought this through very carefully, we are no longer going to have the high seed as Entry 1. It's going to be randomized, so nobody knows who is who. I saw too many votes go to the "lower seed" just for the hell of it (that's based on people's comments both on the posts and personally).
Tiebreaker will still go to the lower seed, because that's just dead sexy.
bart is going to try to get something added in that will let you look at your entry to make sure it is there. We had a couple of technical glitches related to submissions not going through... one had to do with an attachment, another had to do with a heavy server load.
If you even think that there could be a problem, email me, and I will have bart check into it. If we can get verification up, I'll notify everyone.
JMG114 will be taking over as "Title Master" because he's out of the tourney and I'm still in... trying to make it as fair as possible, folks.

Our condolences to bargled, who got screwed on a technical glitch and then we couldn't get in touch with him because he was on vacation.

About seeds:
We had 21 highers seeds progress, and 11 upsets. Of those 11 upsets, only two of the sixteen people seeded from 1-4 lost... most of the upsets were in the 8/9 and 7/10 matchups... also the 5/12s and the 6/11s involved people who should have been seeded but signed up late, or should have been seeded and weren't and slaughtered in the first round.
I think this is a validation of the seeding process... it works.

Ubersite crossed the 100,000 mark for pageviews for the first time ever on Monday, and Tuesday topped Monday. Holy shit!!!

Editor's Note:
When I started the idea for this contest, the main thing going through my head was "This is cool."
As it began to crystalize, I had visions of glory and fame dancing in my head, because... well... we all fall prey to that bullshit sometimes.
The actual rewards that I've gotten out of this contest have had nothing to do with that.
I got a phone call from an Ubersite user... they said that it was the first time they had been forced to write something against a deadline that was not a work report in about fifteen years. And they were happier than they had been in awhile.
THAT is what is going to stick with me after this contest is in the books... helping to draw out creativity in others is a greater reward than being creative yourself.
Thank you for that call.
Also, thank you to everyone who has called/IMed/emailed to tell me how exciting this contest has been for them. It's been a lot of work, and I'm glad to see it's paying off.

People do not always vote on quality of writing, sometimes subject matter plays a huge roll.
Entry #1 was written better but the post itself turned me off to it. I'm sure this sort of thing influenced many peoples votes on several posts

UberMadness authors I would like to share a few thoughts with you If I may.
Today as I stood in line at the post office waiting to mail out my taxes, I remembered I had forgotten to read the last entry before I left. I made a mental note to do it when I returned home. That started me thinking about how many posts I really liked and how good they all were. There were really only 2 entries where both posts did not do much for me. That also made me think "I may not have liked them but could I do that?" I started to think about how hard it would be to write fiction in this manner. To be given a title and breathe life into it using only my imagination. It is not even very easy to tell your own non-fictional stories in a way that will move people. So I commend you all. I say ignore all the snide or rude comments. They are clearly made by people who do not realize how difficult this must be.
If your post loses do not forget that people vote for fiction based on the format or story type they personally like. Losing does not mean your post sucked. In 90% of the cases here i think it's merely because more people preferred the other type of fiction. I am partial to horror/ paranormal or endearing stories. I will almost always pick those over sex, sports, or historical stuff. But thats just my taste. Many of these were hard choices and I think you are all talented and very brave to even attempt this sort of writing format.

WOW! I LOVE WRITERS THAT TRY TO DO SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT! There are so many good writers in this group. Its refreshing to see the experimentation with other writing techniques and writing challenges! I hope the book publishers and editors are taking a look!!

This round has been Rockin!
There are only a handful of posts that I found to be just so-so.
Some of the posts this round have been the best short stories I have ever read in my life.
I hope the authors of the great posts that could be made into much longer stories follow up with those stories. If they are too long for Uber i would love to have them sent to me so I can read longer versions.

believe it or not, my taste of fae post, with your subsequent review has enabled me to keep my entries shorter as well.
My recent entry got trimmed quite a bit and I left several things out that I would have included if I convert it to another medium.
I have been getting lucky though. My first two attempts at each of my entries, while good possible stories would have taken too long to build and grow with.
I am quite anxious to see the end results of this round.

I personally prefer the long ones and I have enough of an attention span to keep reading. If they stink badly enough that I get bored, well, that's going to lose my vote.
It seems like most people prefer relatively short, though.
For my post this round, I took a story that could have been easily five times as long and could have included many more elements, but I was afraid of the wtf I'm not reading all that factor, so I cut out about 75% of it and kept it to "bare bones".

Oh dear god have mercy on us all. I hope all the posts are not going to be as long as the Take Me Away one. Razor, shouldn't there be a penalty if the posts go to-o-o-o long? How much time do we (the readers) have to look at all these posts? Its so easy to say 'forget it--I'm not reading all that' and just vote willy-nilly. loki (about six years after the fact): Sideways Stories from Wayside School was nothing less than one of the greatest books of my misbegotten childhood...judging from Tak's reaction, I would guess he'd have similar things to say about it. I'd like to express my admiration for Apollo as an opponent, and were it not for the double teaming of his birthday and the fire that caused his technical problems, I think I would have had a much harder time of it, especially considering that many of his strengths in writing are my weaknesses.
I am glad I got the chance to go up against him in the first round, because I knew going in that he was fully capable of winning. My hat would be off to you, Apollo, if I wore one. But since I don't, I'll just say I'd by a round of drinks in your honor.

Spooner, there's a problem with that. Sure it would make things even and easier to judge maybe. But there are some authors out there, like me, who may be fairly good at one genre, but can't write for crap in another. You'd probably argue that in that case I deserve to lose. I don't think that's the case. I am simply just not very strong in some aspects. And that is part of what makes this comp great.

spooner, i had to read that like 5 times to make sure. are you kidding me? from my experience, fiction gets overlooked and is underrated on ubersite. and considering often times fiction is humoress, whats the distinction. i realize that a lot of the fiction ISN'T humoress, but enough is not to classify fiction as dramatic only. i gotta say, that humor posts have the upper hand.
oh, and if you don't think its equal b/c of the more popular genres, then eityher write what you want and be proud of it and maybe lose, or conform to what they want be unhappy with your post, and maybe win.

I only have one problem with this contest:
You guys spent so much time to make sure everything was even. making everyone anonymous, putting the posts on the same page, even giving them the same title to work with. The problem that's happening is that, while you have the same title, you'll still end up getting two ENTIRELY different posts if, like in my contest, someone decides to post something humorous and the other takes the drama side. Then it stops becoming a contest of who wrote better, but who wrote to the mroe popular genre. And from my experience here works of fiction get better ratings overall that humor posts.
I dunno if this would be taking the conformity thing too far, but couldn't we maybe go each round by genre? If not just so the posts stay similar enough to measure them against each other accurately. Also, forcing a writer to write comedy and then fiction and then something else would force them to prove their versatility as a writer.
I heard you guys were considering doing this again in September, so maybe you should consider adding this to the already long list of rules and procedures.

well my votes do not count and i did not get everything read due to a router malfunction that had me offline for 2 days. I must say, however, based on what i did get read my favorite post concepts were loki's, bart's and Helm's Helm your post rocked and was by far one of the most imaginative things i have read. Bart it was so obvious that it was Earth in your pill and not the blue pill from the matrix so blah to whoever started that whole thing. Thank you for the match up Genko, it was really fun.
Some comments.
1) Keep on keepin' on everyone! Some of those match ups were amazing, and obviously by the vote totals, too close to call. Keep those creative juices flowing, make it tough to be a seeded contestant in September!
2) If you were to eliminate speculation and "who's who" talk, you'd be eliminating one of the most exciting parts of the contest. Its simple, guessing who wrote what is FUN! Poly, I guessed on MANY matches who was who and as it turns out, I was right only a handful of times.
I don't feel that I should be DQ'ed for guessing, correctly, that you wrote that post. Loki is right, my comment has NO EFFECT on the outcome of your match since no one can see what anyone wrote until they vote themselves.
If you ask me, your little suggestion of IMing someone to find out if they wrote something is closer to standing on grounds of disqualification. Back room talking about who wrote what will only lead to coercing people to vote for you... how is that better than throwing up a guess on your review?
I'm not going to call you on it because I don't know if you were taking your own advice. I suggest though, that if you are engaging in this behaviour, you cease because I think it is dishonorable. There's no way anyone can catch you at it either.... so whatever.
You suggestion was BS anyways... why the fuck would I want to IM you?

Deisangua, I agree that people should try to maintain honorable behavior in everything, not just the stuff that offers rewards.
However, I guess I wasn't really paying attention that much; I didn't see the actions you mentioned. I'm not doubting that it happened, I just didn't see it. I guess I've gotten complacent. I expect a certain type of behavior from a lot of the people here, and I am rarely disappointed. Oh well. I hope you do shove it all down their throats. Go get 'em.
