Gay marriage is a big topic these days. A lot bigger than it should be. But I might as well put in my two cents, even if it IS a bit late in the argument.

I don't see any reason gays should not have the right to be married. It's guarunteed in our constitution that all people are treated the same legally, so why should we exclude any one group of people?

I do have a problem with the whole marriage thing in general, though. Marriage is a religion-based concept with some legal perks tied on, right? Church and state are supposed to be seperate, as is also mandated by our constitution... So hey. Court-based civil unions for everyone!

Actually, I don't think I want to get married/unified/whatever. I'm happy just moving in with someone. My dad recently told me that in Sweden there's an interesting alternative to marriage -- if you live with someone for x years, you're considered pretty much hitched. That means less paperwork, less money going into a ceremony or court hearing, and if things don't work out all you need to do is move out. And you still get all the perks that marriage gives you! I'll have to do some more research on this -- I think that kind of law would work well.

But there's one thing I can't stand. I'm sure you've heard that bullshit phrase: "If gays are allowed to marry, it will ruin the sanctity of a sacred union only between a man and a woman." Considering the divorce rate in America (and their reasons -- ever seen Divorce Court on TV?), as well as how many people get married in Vegas by an Elvis impersonator, I think the sanctity in marriage is long gone. I think we can stand to allow same-sex couples the same basic rights.

In the meantime, I'll continue to be amused by the people in power, who are fumbling to find reasons other than "it's just not the Christian thing to do".

Am I really the one who needs to stop bitching? This whole post is a big long bitch, you moron. Nice job with the divorce rate reference, by the way, as it has much to do with Gays deserving marriage rights. Hey asshole, if you think marriage is already screwed up, then why the hell would gays be whining about the right to obtain it? So what's your argument? Are we intolerant, or are we, as you say, not following the equal rights amendment in the constitution? Jesus. So if I'm a guy, do I still deserve the right to be president of MADD? If I can't, then where the hell is the equal treatment! hey!

Most of all, I love hearing you kooks immediatly assume that anyone against gay marriage is automatically intolerant and/or a homophobe. Of course, I'm neither, let the gays knock themselves out and get boyfriends and girlfriends, hell, let them live together, who the hell cares. How bout we leave a 5,000 year long tradition the way it is, you infringing bastards. Not to mention the group capable of procreating. And don't give me stupid shit about childless families, because, NEWSFLASH, PROCREATION is NOT a MARRIAGE PRIORITY. Same thing with single mothers, can you prove, exactly, what that has to do with anything?

enough of this gay shit, no pun intended. Everyone needs to shut up.

so are you saying that people who want to get married who arnt religious should not get married?

and the christian thing(another huge topic) is accually suported by the majority of americans. the hole "get God out of the flag pledg" thing is only supported by a verry small number. Same as same-sex marriges. Just that there are alot of people who are like you and dont care eather way.

+2 for good wrighting

"My dad recently told me that in Sweden there's an interesting alternative to marriage -- if you live with someone for x years, you're considered pretty much hitched"

would that be anything like COMMON LAW?

Let me put it this way...

People can't treat people of a differant race in a civil manner... and now the gays are saying that they should get marriage rights... One thing at a time here, we aren't really beyond Rosa Parks people.

GET A CLUE GAYS, until people can respect and treat people of a differant race in a civil manner you can't begin to HOPE that they will treat someone who loves in a differant way to be treated with respect.

Who needs marriage anyway? Just live together and be fruitful.

The gays get a -100 for their timing.
You get a -2 for bringing this up

Let's look at this argument:

Gays, just like anyone else, are permitted to marry and receive the exact same benefits as any other person in the US. That person just has to be of an opposite sex. How is that denying you your rights? Because it's not something you want to do? I don't want to buy a hybrid vehicle, but I can't claim the tax deduction unless I do. Since marriage is implicity as well as legally defined as being between a 'man and a woman', how is this discrimination? Any individual can, within that legal framework, be married to a member of the opposite sex.

ATTENTION GHAY MENZ!

Dude fag on fag should not be allowed, its just morally wrong to have fags married, i mean if you get married in a church and see a flock of homos getting married there too wouldnt that make your marriage feel less err proper, i mean what animal has faggness other than humans/americans/and homo erections. DUDE THATS THE first -2 i've given this week. I DO NOT LIKE GHAY MENZ!

Congratulations on making yourself sound like an amoeba with down syndrome.
There have been recorded cases of homosexuality with cows, horses, several ape species, cats, dogs and who knows what else.
Also, did you ever watch lesbian porn?
I bet you did, those are gay too, but I don't hear you bitching about that.

Please go play under a driving train now.

The text was good by the way.

I agree.

I've said it before, I'll say it again..."civil unions" are the "partial birth abortion" of the gay marriage debate. It's a verbal loophole.

Common Laws differ by state. It's pretty prevalent here but I don't think it actually applies to gays. I don't see the difference between a civil union and marriage. No one has been able to explain it. If they are both recognized by the state as something akin to a corporate merger then what is the point of making a distinction other than to ease the concerns of the religious crazies. If you can find a church that does not have a problem with it, then by all means enjoy your falling rice and popped champagne corks.

But yea, this has kind of been done to death on here.

I could on for hours about how Christians' only reasons are "it's just not right" or "it goes against god's will" blah blah blah. I've learned that most Christians are hypocrites, and I avoid letting myself get lectured with morals and "rules" of the Bible. Gays should be treated equally and be allowed to marry, that's my opinion. And yeah, about the whole common law thing, in Texas (where I live) if you live with someone for 6 months, you're "married" by common law.

Made sense. I think people only get married as they think thats what your supposed to do when you "grow up".

Same as people only have there kids Christened to keep granny happy.

You're likely to get slaughtered with negative ratings over this.

Not because you're wrong (that has nothing to do with it), but because it's been done before and you are saying nothing new.

Either put it in fresh perspective (that is, an opinion you wouldn't get from your average news source) or try to piss people off and incite arguments, thus attracting argumentative people who are about a hundred times more likely to have big mouths that won't shut up. The middle road is not the way to go here.

Just FYI.

say, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you
do unto me...?"

Homer: Yes, but doesn't the Bible also say, "Thou shalt not take
moochers into thy hut?"
