Being a 50 year-old Asian man living in Montana is not easy.
I should know, that man is me. When my parents moved to the USA almost 40 years ago, they had a tough time, and I, as a ten year old boy who only spoke Chinese had a tougher time. My parents didn't want to move into an "Asian Community" because they left China to get away from all the Asian Bullshit. So we moved to Idaho. Not an Asian for miles. The next Asian person I would see would be years later.
Growing up, in an attempt to learn English, Chinese was not allowed to be spoken in the home. Only English. As you could probably imagine, there were a lot of silent dinners and awkward phrasings. They started me off in school as soon as we were settled. My father worked as a repairman, fixing all sorts of machinery. Mostly tractors. My mom would spend her hours constantly cleaning and sewing clothes for the family to wear.
Money was tight, and our leash of patience was tighter.
Whenever something went wrong in town...we were the first family to get the evil-eye. It was atough life growing up. I learned how to "grin and bear it."
When I finshed my awkward teens and became a full-time man, life didn't get easier. I moved out of my house and decided to do some soul-searching and took a trip across the US. I pretty much traveled from Idaho to Montana and then I stopped. It wasn't far but I found an apprentice job at as a welder. It was more money than i ever saw.
I worked with Mr. Topper for 20 years and now I'm in charge of the business. Until recently. Shop closed up. No Business. Montana became less populated.
I went on job interviews and the basic response was "Too old and Too Asian." Sucks.
So here I am at the public library. Wasting my life away on this website that has entertained me so.
Why am I telling you all this? I don't know.
