i mentioned this to my friend the other day and he cautioned me about age of consent laws.

lucky he did, because it turns out i would have been in big trouble if i'd had sex with this girl in my home country of australia. the law is an ass!

fortunately, my sweetheart and i need not suffer deprivation of our natural urges.

we can either migrate to Chile now, or wait a year and migrate to Japan. Or we could wait two years and migrate to Austria:

http://www.avert.org/aofconsent.htm

Its all very inconvenient though.

Why the fuck do i live in this backward country??????

I don't think I have any goals, so how would I know if my mental state is keeping me from anything?

I'd like to talk to a therapist. I know I'm fucked up, and I know some of my thoughts might make Manson cringe. But instead of thinking about how it could help me to function in society, I'd just want to know where I rank on the therapists scale of "Most fucked up people I've ever tried to treat". Maybe that's my problem, not wanting to accept any help, but instead, make fun of it all the time.

P.S.
Does this mean no to the sex question?

Herpes,

If your thoughts are disturbing to you, then you might want to talk to somebody. I certainly can't sit here and know whether things are ok with you or not, and nobody else can know either. Taking care of yourself is your responsibility, and that includes your mental health...you know? If you truly feel like your thought process is abnormal and it's upsetting to you, or if it gets in the way of you accomplishing your goals or living your life the way you want to, then go talk to a therapist and just see what he/she thinks.

Hang in there.

I was actually thinking about how bored I am. This in turn got me thinking about getting up and going out to do something. But when my bored mine wanders, I think of some fucked up things. I was actually thinking about hopping in my car, and driving 150 down the road until the cops chase me. Then, instead of pulling over, I'd lead them on a chase for hours and hours on end. Maybe end up in another state. When i'd run out of gas, I'd just put the gun to my head and threaten to kill myself if the cops don't let me fill up and get back in my car. And then I wonder if they would just shoot me to stop me from being a speeding menace down the road. And then my mind wanders to what everyone in my family would say, and all my "friends". I'm not sure anyone would miss me, and it makes me almost seriously want to try this. Why do I always think of negative things? I think I may need some professional help, or some heavy medication. I may get a rush out of thinking up the worst possible scenario. Shit I wouldn't do in a million years intrigues me when I'm bored out of my skull.

So would you like to have sex or what spike?

Insane,

You told me Mr Prickle = Shandy, that's all I meant.

Mr Prickle,

It is lovely that you have a pufferfish named after you. Pufferfish are so cute, yet so intoxicatingly leathal.

I agree with your insights about Hamlet. Literary people debate about whether he really loved Ophelia or not, but I think he had to have loved her. From an actor's perspective anyway, if he didn't love Ophelia then you're asking the audience to sit through hours of watching a man hate/abuse his mother and his girlfriend, which people only want to watch for so long, and will make us lose sympathy for him. In acting it is also true that "yes, I love ______" is always more intersting than "no, I don't love ______". Ophelia certainly loved Hamlet. His madness was feigned, at least in part. Hers was all too real. I also don't think that Ophelia is some vapid, worthless little creature, as some literary critics would have it. It is the deterioration Hamlet's *mind* that she laments above all else,

"Oh, what a noble mind is here o'erthrown
The cortiers', soldiers', scholars', eye, tongue, sword
The glass of fashion and the mold of form,
Th' observed of all th' observers, quite, quite, down."

Hamlet wrote her letters, and knowing the way that he thinks/speaks throughout the play, there is every reason to believe that a young woman who fell in love with him must be of significant intellect herself in order to appriciate the way that he no doubt, expressed his affection to her in writing.

Ophelia has been to a great degree, maligned. I don't think she was as weak as critics make her out to be. I think the loss of her intelligent mind and her noble heart are what makes her death tragic. It is a loss comparable to the loss of Hamlet, because though Ophelia's mind is not quite on Hamlet's level, she's damned close, and she also possesses empathy to a degree that Hamlet doesn't. Ophelia doesn't start out as an innocent, weak, vapid little womanchild dressed in white. She begins the play a noblewoman with a bright mind and a bright future, and her tragic end was not inevitable. It was one of the many consequences of Hamlet's intensely selfish course of action.

Anyway, when a modern girl is called an "Ophelia", it's usually a reference to the stereotypical picture of the character. It's a put-down describing a young woman who is in love with her own pain and who can aspire to little more than a drowning in her own tears. The book I reference takes a different angle, and talks about the loss of the brilliance and promise in young women. It's based on American culture, and you should know that in my experiences growing up in America, it described not only what I experienced, but also what every single young female that I met had experienced. The book seems an exaggeration, but when I was a girl (I read the book when I was 13) it was dead-on accurate to my life experiences. I could point to any story in that book and come up with a handful of friends who had similar stories to match it.

I am sorry that The Nieces have lost their brilliance. May they recover it swiftly, and live to laugh at things even more painful than a potato to the nose.

spike goddess,

you are a rather intriguing character yourself - your reasoned and sensible response does not seem that of a rabid evangelical feminist at all!!

I was particularly interested in this bit:

"Read the book "Reviving Ophelia" for more information on the cultural origins of this phenomenon, at least from a feminist perspective. It is right around the age of 12-13 when girls seem to lose that vitality and freedom. The lucky ones will find something close to it later in life, but not many are so lucky. Lucky men will find such a woman to love. "

Also present at the bbq where i met my latest object of unrequited love were "The Nieces".

"The Nieces" are my good friend's husband's nieces. We had a running joke a couple of summers ago in which she, when trying to cage an invitation to my house for a swim, would act the pimp and promise to bring "The Nieces".

I loved it when The Nieces came for a swim - not just because i wanted to leer at newly pubescent girls in swimming costumes, but also because they were actually good fun to play with. And they were highly impressed by my ability to catch two balls at once in mid air (http://www.ubersite.com/m/30087 refers). One of them once got hit on the nose with a raw potato (we couldn't find any tennis balls that day) and just laughed it off.

Anyway, seeing The Nieces again after an absence of two years i was shocked by how much they had changed. That mysterious special quality had vanished and they were just so 'ordinary'. I was really struck by the transformation.

So I will HAVE to have a look at this Ophelia book you mentioned. Hamlet is the only shakespeare play I've read, and I actually was quite concerned about Ophelia. Hamlet seemed to have been a bit stupid with Ophelia, from memory.

I wonder if these lyrics are somehow relevant:

Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window
For her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday
She already is an old maid

To her, death is quite romantic
She wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion
Her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon
Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking
Into Desolation Row

Mr Prickle, you are a fascinating character. Here are my thoughts.

"first of all, i'll admit my love for the 12 year old girl is something of an old man's whimsical folly and NO DOUBT will never progress beyond the realms of fantasy (as with most of my fantasies, alas)."

This is good news.

"but in reality she IS completely charming and beguiling, a lovely person who made me feel more alive than usual. (some girls her age have a certain quality that appears to be shyness but is actually a form of self-containment. they have not yet become the habitually fearful, self-consious poseurs that most of us become as we get older. in this sense, they are actually stronger than most adults, more real. when they smile, for example, it is a real smile.) also, it must be said that this little fillie fills out her swimming togs in a very appealing way."

Read the book "Reviving Ophelia" for more information on the cultural origins of this phenomenon, at least from a feminist perspective. It is right around the age of 12-13 when girls seem to lose that vitality and freedom. The lucky ones will find something close to it later in life, but not many are so lucky. Lucky men will find such a woman to love.

"BUT, and now I will make my Big Point, surely its very interesting food for SERIOUS thought that countries such as Chile and Japan apparently allow sex with 12 and 13 year old girls like her. Ie, if I had met this very same girl in Chile we could have quite legally at least enjoyed some hanky panky. Isn't that somehow amazing???"

Yes. Cultural difference are astounding, and the difference in law is no exception.

"when i studied anthropology the thing that most struck me, before it all got bogged down in esoteric bullshit theorising, was that the laws and customs we unthinkingly accept as written in stone are merely the passing fashions of a particular time and place. It is in fact possible to look around you and question the norms of your society."

Yes.

"I wonder if the 12 and 13 year olds of Chile and Japan have suffered terribly due to their countries' permissive laws????? And have the more conservative laws of our societies really helped to create a happy sexual environment???"

Well, that would require a lot of investigation and more than mere speculation. Also, the laws exist within a sociocultural context, not in isolation. Other factors could lead to a 13 year old in Chile being emotionally and socially equipt to handle a sexual relationship in ways that a 13 year old in your country could not. The laws may be suited to the populations that make them, but not to all populations. Or the laws could be based on political jockeying or other such things.

"Unfortunately, even suggesting that such matters should be thought about and discussed usually results in being labelled as a pedophile."

Breaking a taboo, especially a sexual one, is always going to be punished by other members of the society.

I had other things to say, but they're trapped in my mind somewhere and won't come out to play.

right.

now, i admit i knew full well that the laws and customs of this land prohibit any sexual contact with this young lady, and had no intention of breaking those laws. There is also the small matter of me being married with a child, and also the small matter of the girl in question presumably having no romantic interest in a pot-bellied bushy-bearded man of forty, even if he did amuse her and she enjoyed his appreciative glances and attention.

BUT, and now I will make my Big Point, surely its very interesting food for SERIOUS thought that countries such as Chile and Japan apparently allow sex with 12 and 13 year old girls like her. Ie, if I had met this very same girl in Chile we could have quite legally at least enjoyed some hanky panky. Isn't that somehow amazing???

Unfortunately, even suggesting that such matters should be thought about and discussed usually results in being labelled as a pedophile.

This seems a great shame, as the consequences of the current state of affairs run far deeper than the issue of actual child sexual abuse. Just the other day I was talking to one of the teachers in my little son's preschool room. She 'confessed' that it is her practise to go against a recent departmental edict banning the cuddling of children. I told her I was very happy she cuddled the children.

That such a conversation actually takes place seems to me truly bizarre and 'sick'.

And what are the consequences for a society of teaching its children from an early age to FEAR STRANGERS in case they fiddle with you??

Having said all that, if some twisted monster interefered with my little boy I would possibly become murderous, depending on what was done to him.

I'm not claiming to understand all this or have a solution, but I do seriously believe that very significant issues are being overlooked by our society.

Spike Godess, if you read this, what say you?? Btw, just in case you're not aware, I, MrPrickle, am also known in some circles as Shandythedog. I thought I should mention that out of courtesy. Not really sure on the uber protocol of muliple name use.

Mystiamoon, I hope if you read this that you don't feel the need to change the splendid name of your pufferfish. I thought of Mr Prickle the Pufferfish just now, actually, when I was playing with Nemo stickers with my son.

Now I must go and shit out those evil greasy lamb choppies, smoke a joint, and drink some plonk. The child sleeps peacefully, the wife is watering her flowers. All is well in the prickle house tonight. Sort of.

If this is a serious matter, as you say, then I think you must place all of the emphasis on the word 'serious' that it deserves. I am not one to judge another person's inward desires, but I would be going against every principle I believe in if I did not say that I strongly decry any physical acting out of your desire for this girl.

Age of consent laws exist for a reason, and that is to protect minors. I won't lecture you, because I'm sure you already know the things I will say.
