"Don't be afraid, I'm here to help you."
I looked up at the girl, and with some reluctance took her hand. It had been a long time since I had seen another person, and seeing her as I awoke had scared me. She was no older than fifteen, with brown hair that matched her eyes perfectly. She had a pretty face, but it made her look even younger than she physically appeared. She sat me down on a nearby rock and took a look at my leg.
"So, how long have you been out here?"
I couldn't remember the answer to that question, for I had no means to keep the date. At first I had kept track by putting stones in a circle near the lake, but after I left there I decided it was best not to keep track, for it would only make me miss home more. I couldn't help but wonder how this young girl had come all this way out here, but then again, I didn't even know where here was.
She put her hand on my shoulder and told me to sit still for a minute, because she needed to find a sturdy stick. I obliged, mainly because I was afraid of being alone again, and watched her walk away. She had a very slender build, but seemed to be quite strong, at least strong enough to pull me out of the hole I was stuck in. Its funny how girls always find ways to surprise you in life, whether it be through strength or intellect.
She came back after a few minutes with what she set out to obtain, and started to examine my leg some more. She ripped the bottom of her shirt off from the rest, and then proceeded to tear that into two.
"I know this is going to hurt, but only for a few seconds, okay?"
I looked at her vacantly and nodded. I still hadn't even to manage a single word from my mouth, but I found it quite easy to let out a scream as she snapped my leg back into place. She looked started from the scream. She had probably assumed I was a mute from my mannerisms. She tied the two strips of cloth around my leg and the stick, and made sure they were nice and tight. She had incredibly soft hands, and her handling my broken leg made me feel relaxed, if only for the human contact.
"So, I never got your name" she stated jokingly.
"Uhh, I'm Jacob. What's your name?"
She looked at me with a quirky smile and replied "I'm Allison, but everyone calls me Allie."
I cracked a smile for the first time since I had gotten out here, but quickly removed it from my face when I looked past her. She noticed the change in my expression and followed my gaze to see what held my eye. About thirty feet behind her was the wolf. I knew it was the same one because of the blood stain on his throat. I kept thinking to myself how it could have found me, how it could still be alive.
It locked eyes with me, and for a moment I believed it could see inside me. I was afraid that was true, because it would then know how petrified I was of this encounter. It must have been weeks since I had run into it, and I was convinced that I had traveled a great distance from where we last met. I slowly started reaching for anything to use to defend myself, but was unable to grasp anything beside leaves. Allie was frozen with fear, as it sat there, sizing both of us up.
The wolf bared his teeth, and then started his charge. I reached to my left leg and yanked the stick from my leg, and sprung out in front of Allie. The wolf saw this in my hand stopped its charge as I struck out with the stick, stopping only a few inches in front of the end. I was in shock that this creature was so fortunate not to be dealt this blow, which surely would have bought us enough time to escape.
The wolf reached his head forward and snapped at the stick. I was so startled that I was unable to pull it back, and he managed to bite off a piece of it. I stood, horrified, as the wolf dropped the separated end from its powerful jaws and returned its gaze to me. We stood, locked in each other's stare for what seemed like eternity, before the wolf backed up and ran back into the brush from where he had appeared.
Allie stared out into the brush, still stunned at the exchange that had just taken place. She turned to me and asked what that creature was, and what had just happened. I was about to answer her questions when the overwhelming pain from my leg rendered me unconscious.
