A couple weeks ago I was sitting on the patio enjoying a fun night by the pool with friends. My priest was there looking grand as ever in his black shirt and collar, a dark beer in one hand and a cigar in the other. He turned to me with a big grin and said, "This is more fun than a person should be allowed to have!" Sometime after this he sung "Friends in Low Places" on the karaoke machine and before relinquishing the mic told a dirty joke having something to do with a birch tree and some woodpeckers. I laughed until my side hurt.
It seems today all that I'm reading is a bunch of hurt children shouting, "You can't prove it! Na na na na! You're just a stupid sheep! Why don't you go follow someone! Baaa Baaa!" I'm not preaching at anyone, I just think it would be only fair to reveal both sides of the coin. Contrary to popular belief, there are happy, intelligent people on both sides.
There is alot of poison in the religious world. It devours the faith of many "good" people and leaves more then just a bad taste in their mouth about God. I'm sorry your childhood memories of church aren't fond. I'm sorry that you've turned from the faith you grew up with. I'm sorry you think that its so much easier for you to ignore religion and go on with your life the way you please. I'm sorry, but I'm also okay with it. If you won't cry out, the rocks will.
The God I know, the church I know, the faith I know is more then just rules and regulations. It's more than some sheepish routine of sinning through the week only to ask for forgiveness on Sunday. It's much MUCH more then the blind leading the blind.
Its about people: Growing, learning, tearing, building, praying, discovering, laughing, playing, praising, confessing, dancing, remembering.
Although we worship in a building, the church is not the building, nor is God only ever to be found in the building. God is wherever we are gathered. Whether it be around the altar for eucharist or poolside with some beer.
'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

If the Bible has taught us nothing else -- and it hasn't -- it's that
girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot oil wrestling and
foxy boxing and such and such.

Marge, you're my wife and I love you very much. But you're living in a
world of makebelieve. With flowers and bells and leprechauns. And magic
frogs with funny little hats...

Nothing wrong with Church or religion as long as you're going for the right reasons. Unfortunately I've had even the most devout Christians acknowledge that most (and by most meaning more than half) are there for the wrong reasons. They go out of habit, they go to socialize, to be seen. Very few are actually there to practice religion.
