So you don't like Rap, thats fine neither do I. However, no one wants to hear you bitch and moan about it. If you all are thinking I'm Reffering to some horribly bad flame posts on Uber, no I'm not, ok...maybe a little.
Actually I'm talking about people who are intolerant of others musical choice in general.
CASE STUDY #1:
Johnny is a high school student who listens to Punk, or at least he thinks he does. Johnny sits in the hallway at lunch with his heavily studded buddies listening to Rancid because he thinks that Rancid is the epitome of Punk. Johnny thinks very little of all of the kids in his school who listen to rap and hip hop and thinks all of his cool clothes from hot topic make him badass. One day Johnny screams "Rap Sucks!" and gets his shit ruined by a kid in a Lincoln Continental with tinted windows. Johnny learns a valuable lesson today. The only people who care about his opinion are the ones who disagree.
Johnny's biggest mistake was judging musical style with his narrow mind. Johnny seems to think that his mainstream punk style makes him and his opinions individual, sorry Johnny you fail. Maybe if Johnny had looked a little deeper he would see that Punk and Hip Hop collaborate nicely. Epitaph (Brett Guerewitz of Bad religion's ultrapunk label) Has signed many Rap and Rap Punk bands to it. And Tim Armstrong of Rancid just happens to be part of a Rap Punk band. So, Johnny what now? Do you give up your 'punk' look and expand your musical knowledge or do you just set yourself up to get prosecuted again for your narrow mind.
CASE STUDY #2:
Troy is a young white adult who listens to Rap. Troy sits in his new escalade blasting 50 cent and trying desperatly to pick women with his obvious charm and poise. Troy goes to a party where the majority of party goers are black. Troy is a little nervous because of the image that, although he endorses he is scared shitless of. What Troy doesnt know is that all of the guys at the party are pretty decent human beings, Sure they all wear Hip Hop clothing and have gold teeth and fit the profile of "gangsta" quite nicely. Troy finds his buddy, who is also white and who seems to be getting along quite nicely with the crowd. Suddenly Troy is confronted by one of the guys qho just wants to say hi, and get to know Troy a little better. Due to Troy's Desensitation by the very music he listens to, Troy Freaks out and shoots the Guy dead with his brand new, never been used 9mm. Troy goes to jail where he has his hiney hole enlarged nightly by a large man named "bubba".
Just like Johnny, Troy believed an image that was portrayed to him by his music, and got fucked over nicely by it, that'll teach him.
Ok, so i protrayed a few stereotypical images within my case studies, but it was just to make a point. I don't think all prison inmates are named Bubba or that all black Hip Hop Fans have gold teeth. I just wanted people to relate a little better. Oh ya and I'm listening to rancid right now and enjoying it thouroughly so don't think im badmouthing them either, or any of the more mainstream punk acts in general. In fact, To a certain extent Johnny was me back in 9th grade.
What matters is, before you judge a musical style, why not check it out a little further than just whats presented to you by things like Mtv and Popular Radio, you might just add a couple CD's to your collection of things you never thought you'd listen to. Exept Emo, Emo sucks no matter how you look at it.
If, in fact you are planning to expand your musical tastes and don't know where to start here are some helpful and easy to find artists and bands to get you into it.
Punk:
Lars Fredricksen and the Bastards
The Casualties
Down by Law
Hip Hop:
Deltron 3030
Sage Francis
Atmosphere
Rockabilly and Psychobilly:
The Reverend Horton Heat
The 5, 6, 7, 8's (that Japanesee band in Kill Bill vol. 1)
Nekromantix
Ska:
The Slackers
Hepcat
The Specials
Just have a look around sometime you'll be suprised at what you find.

its too bad that someone who appreciates other types of music doesnt appreciate emo. i find that most of the poeople that dont enjoy emo dont understand it. i understand it perfectly. it must be the depression... i think thats a key feature.....

If you knew anything about emo instead of the overlyused stereotypes and portrayed them fittingly in your post.. you wouldn't have earned my negative 2... oh well

Pretty good. 'To Have and to Have Not' by Lars Friedriksen and the Bastards is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Fine - didn't make any major impression. I can't really see a white guy shooting up some black guy for talking to him at a party. Unless it was a crack-crazed half retarded black man with a kitchen knife.
