First, we have the traditional team versus team games we all know and love/hate/are indifferent towards/other. Football (at least 3 different kinds), rugby, hockey, basketball, water polo... take your pick (though the idea won't work for cricket and baseball, or similar games). On a given day anyone can beat anyone, but it is more likely the better team will win, and if the better team is far better than the other team, the likelihood is it won't be a very interesting game to watch.
Enter the idea that could revolutionise sports as we know them...
Why not have it so you have three (or more, I've had it put to me by friends that 4 and other even numbers might be easier to plan) teams competing in one game? It works for videogames and some board games, so why not try applying the same principles to create a more interesting version (both to watch and to play) of the sport in question.
For the finer details, I propose that the rules be kept mostly the same, but the sport in question is played now on a circular arena, with the goals the same distance apart from each other as the actual game. The teams can score in either goal that is not their own, and the rules are kept the same otherwise (even offside still works).
Then even an utter mismatch between teams can be toned down a bit by the knowledge that there's a third team to deal with. Theoretically, the better team should still win more frequently, but there's a lot more in the way of tactics to deal with and thus the sport becomes more interesting to watch.
Well, even if this idea doesn't come to fruition (I will concede that it is unlikely to, as this would require a complete redesign of sporting stadiums everywhere to cater for this) I would at least like to see a video game made out of it as a test to see how well it works. Who knows, if it works, then a three+ team match up might become the normal, and commentators would end up saying "Point zero zero one" to tell the scores (at half time, or whenever else it was deemed necessary/acceptable).
So, what do you think of this idea?

I like the "sandwhiches in all varieties at a low price" part
