I'm curious about something. I've been online since back when putting a 1200 in my 12MHz was the shit. More recently I noticed people using the term 'owned'... and even more recently it seemed to evolve into 'pwned'. Before it evolved, as far as I can tell, there was a server that used to run Counterstrike 24/7, and it would broadcast comments like some of them did. If someone really got worked, like say taking each round from a deagle in the head, it would broadcast "[insert menacing nickname] got pwned!" I always thought it was just a typo on the admin's part. Then I started noticing everyone everywhere saying "pwned".
Is there a better explanation? I'd love to hear it cause this keeps me up at night wondering.

From what i've heard, it's also been interpreted as "powerfully owned," not just a typo. Either way, it's just a phrase that's getting just as old as any Rick James or Lil' Jon impression.

Theres a techno song thats kinda similiar, not the music from the game remix, but its got the robot voice saying all your base are belong to us.
I remember my friend showing me this in the game back in the day. I just got pissed cause it confused the shit outta me when we were playing, then he was like "hey check this out!" We then went on to make fun of the chinese.

there are 2 schools of thought on the origin of thought,either way back in the day some high ranking quake player misspelled owned OR a Blizzard map designer mispelled it in warcraft, the truth? we will never know, well i guess you could know if you played warcraft until you found it, then you would know

Type that became a typo. Most FPS guys are tweaker style typers because they want to hurry and get back to playing and pwn'ing so since the o and the p on a keyboard are next to each other, it was a very common typo.

just Google "All your base are belong to us", you will get the full scoop. It's a jumbled English translation from a Genesis game, Zero Wing. Someone started using it on the overclocked.org message boards and it worked it's way into Tribes. from there it's all history....

its a typo that has turned into a common word.. i guess thats how you could put it... o and p are next to each other... and... um... the p is easier to hit when typing fast (like during a fast paced 1st person shooter). yeah. pwnage.
